2022 now.
Born and bred Highlander here.
I'd like to say that so long as you wear a kilt correctly and with dignity then it doesn't really matter which tartan you choose.
My mother is MacLeod, and I have both kilts, but for official do's I always wear MacKenzie as it's my dad's line.
In the past 30 years every lowland family has started wearing kilts for weddings, even though none of them are real highlanders, most never has a family let-alone a clan tartan, none have roots in the old clan system, and their ancestors regarded the tartan wearing Gaelic speaking highlanders as savages.
But it doesn't really matter anymore.
Just remember the wearing of tartan was once illegal and could result in being executed. So when you do wear it, wear it well and wear it with Pride.
I am kind of lucky to have several families in my "woodpile". Great-Grandfather (Mother's side) is Davidson; 6th Great-Grandfather (Father's side) is Ferguson; 7th Great-Grandmother (Mother's side) is MacLeod (McClure). So I'm going to get one kilt to represent each and wear them proudly. I also had a dear friend (Recently deceased) whom I worked with for 25+ years in police work. I asked his surviving brother if he minded that I get a kilt made in his brother's memory to honor our friendship and brotherhood. I was honored that the blessed the idea, so I'm planning to get a Sinclair Hunting kilt.
The Davidsons can also be counted as Clan Chattan as it is thought that David Dubh, the founder of Clan Davidson, was a son of a Chattan chief. There is history of the two clans going back a long time.
if your last name isnt a clan last name, then you're not a part of that clan. just because you had ancestors with that last name, does not mean who inherit it. also 7th-6th great grandparent is so far back its irrelevant. your name is not a clan last name, then you have no connection to the clan.
@@colinp2238 Clan Chattan was kind of unique, having been bolstered by several smaller clans for their own protection and interests.
@@user-ub8lt7gv2h Why so negative? I never said I was a member of a clan. I only mentioned these names as relatives and I enjoy the culture.
@@ichabod0391 Thanks 😊
When you said "wearing both at the same time" now I'm imagining one big layered kilt and I kinda love it???
I have Ochiltree, McQueen, Cowan MacFarlane, Cowan and Crawford in my background. My mother was a Wallace. I wear her tartan.
However, there's nothing wrong with wearing any tartan you like! As Eric has said in prior videos, just don't represent yourself as being from that clan if you're not. Even Scots will say any tartan is OK (as per the Kilted Coaches!).
Nice choice, Rocky! Showing off my clan’s beautiful colors! I recently ordered Scout neckerchiefs for my boys and I in Sinclair Ancient Hunting from Strathmore Woolen (good company to work with). Looking good!
Beaty, Galloway, Neal, Patterson, Kerr, Shepherd, Waddell, Reid, Finley, Rea, Todd, McGinn. One of each, please! :-)
Thanks guys!!
great videos, wish you guys would add in info what tartans Rocky and Eric are wearing....
Eric is wearing a shadow tartan and Rocky is wearing Sinclair Hunting Ancient.
Red Lion has good kilts and good tartan info.
Hey guys, love your videos, and this one really cleared things up for me.
Here's a couple of questions for you? Did you know the kilt - in its present form skirt design - was actually invented by an Englishman? Also, what do you make of the English Kilt? It's not something coated with different tartan patterns, but rather England's national colours.
I'm from the Maxwell - Wallace Clans
I have a great combination of my families: the Red Graham. McNaughton loaned the Marquise of Montrose (Graham) his tartan when he was sent to the gallows so he could die with honor.
Have 1 of each. I am Macgregor thru Grierson, and patterson thru Macaulay and Farquharson and black douglas on my grandfather's side, and clan Macdonald on my mothers dad side.
I'm from clan campbell and clan wallace talk about a hard choice
On mom’s side: Currie, Donald, Campbell ( yup, both ), Stewart, MacLaine, Robertson.
For me the Currie or the Donald Of Clanranald tartans would be the ”closest”.
I would wear your Nordic Heritage tartan with a clan kilt pin though ( seeing the NH as a ”district” or ”fashion” tartan and thus universal ).
When do we get to see Erik sporting the Nordic Heritage with a mjollnir kilt pin…..drinking horn in one hand and a bearded axe in the other? 😄
Great video! Us that a skunk sporran?
Where the Sinclair clan comes from?
My fathers name is mackeage which was a sept under macleod of harris my grandmother or great grandmother was a maclean, in my case I'm either going to buy a plain black kilt and wear a maclean and macleod of harris kilt pin or ill buy a macleod of harris kilt (which is cheaper instead of getting one custom made which ups price from 100 dollar to 400-500$ ) and wear a maclean kilt pin
I was talking to my grandma, her grandfather actually came from Scotland with the last name Muir
Grandma on my moms side
Both of my grandmothers are heavily Scottish both of my Grandfathers are not so I suppose if I was to get into such things it'd be dad's mom's line that's the closest, but at least it's clear cut that their last name has a tartan.
I can't find mine i was born in England but my great grandparents was born and there parents so on in Scotland but I know my ancestors are originally from Ireland then moved to Scotland
So I have lineage the clan Lamont but I completely love all Scottish history and heritage so I only wear in my clan kilt pin and I explained that anybody ask but I’ll wear any clan tartan because I’m a supporter of the culture and history now I will tell people this is like what tartan this is for what clan it is and I do know the names That I’m wearing and I’ll give someone of a brief underlay of that clan, but I always represent in my clan by my pen
Armstrong, Aye! No kilts for Border Clans, but love my USA Kilts Armstrong Ancient Tartan vest.
Crazy reivers!
@@Cailean_MacCoinnich Guilty as charged.
There is an official board of clans to check upon this
I know this is 2 years old, I was wondering, I was born Henderson but was given up for adoption at the age of 3 to a Cunningham family, my biological father is Henderson, adopted father is Cunningham, I'm 39 and truly I don't know how I feel, love my adopted dad, my biological father. We'll he's my father ill leave it as that, BUT my biological mother is also Scottish, Campbell, you could say there is alot
Forbes
I heard that you go via the female side, as you always know who your mother is, not necessarily, who your father is. I go via my fathers mother who is a Gilmore, sept of clan Morrison.
Why are yanks so obsessed with us scots lol?
