László Polgár is the ultimate Sarastro: he radiates dignity, benevolence and nobility of spirit, all the ideals his character represents.
I also love that this production develops the Masonic symbolism of the libretto and adopts elements of Masonic ritual into the set design. What a great idea!

How could I live until now and never heard this magnificent singer before!!!! I am in absolute awe of such a gorgeous instrument. An absolute divine gift! So glad he is recorded for future generations!

václav hanusekv thanks for your comment and me too; heard this now for the first time and Iam so impressed. This is exactly the aria that is still so moving at my husband's funeral 14 years ago and always stays and yet it is still wonderful.
He is, indeed very good, and better than in Sarastro's second aria, where unfortunately, Polgar seems to get the endings wrong: the tempo is also the correct (slow) one, which increases the aria's difficulty. HOWEVER, I do not think Polgar can surpass my all time favourite, a very tall order to be honest: Kurt Moll.

Moll is the best Sarastro ever. Polgar‘s voice, at least in this performance, misses weight and sonority.

Mi ci si sono messa di proposito e alla 50° interpretazione di questa aria, di bassi bravissimi persino con la direzione del grande Muti, non ho trovato nessuno così aderente a Mozart, così potente e dolce, così privo di fughe personalistiche come Polgar.

This is most likely close to the original pitch, as pitch has been rising since the last hundreds of years

The first version I've heard and seen via CZcams in which the Sarastro is not just showing-off his voice but also acting his part, involved in his scene. (There may well be others, but I haven't got to them yet.).
