My Calc 3 professor told the class that when he was in grad school, he was told by a professor of his that he was dumb and should not pursue a PhD. He took that to heart and stopped pursuing it. He then decided to pursue it later and got his PhD. He went to a conference to lecture and that same professor who told him he was dumb was there.

For me, accepting that I am Not Good Enough and utilizing it is my approach now.
In high school and earlier, I was always the top 1 in math in my school, but when I got to college and my classes were all top 1s from all over the city, I immediately felt that no matter how hard I tried I seemed to be Not Good Enough.
After I entered college, I had a more free life, and my goal was not just to take exams. I majored in computer science, but I was also interested in math, and I found that I could not launch a lot of mathematical theories that were hundreds of years old by myself, so I had to study them.
When from the original “first learn the theory and then do exercises” into “first their own empty research and then learn the existing theory”, more deeply understand how great the previous mathematicians!
For me now, just learning the theories of those mathematicians hundreds of years ago is very exciting, so I accept my own Not Good Enough, but I also know that thanks to the book and network, I can learn so much knowledge that was impossible for me to come up with on my own. that's amazing!

Hey, you know what? I was RIGHT at the C/D level in Gen Chem most of this semester and was considering dropping since I just felt overwhelmed with my class/work load. Like there was no way I’d pull it off. My teacher encouraged me, “keep going, you’re doing fine - you’ll see”. I thought she was crazy, but come midterms, sure enough, half the class dropped out. We survivors banded together and group studied our asses off. She was right: I finished with a 77%: good enough to transfer to university. Sometimes we just have to admit that we just don’t know what the hell we’re talking about when it’s personal and emotional for us. In math related news? I went from having to start at Math 99 to just finishing Calc1 with a 91%!

  • @anniesizemore3344
    @anniesizemore3344 Před 23 dny +3

I don't care if I'm good enough to do something. If I want to do it, I'm going to try. Never let not feeling good enough stop you. You'll have more regrets if you don't try. People have different abilities. When I was in 3rd grade, the teacher told the entire class a girl in the class was gifted & talented. She was kind of mad at the class when she was telling us that. She told us we didn't we have a right to be jealous of that girl because we weren't gifted & talented. That's probably not the thing a teacher should tell a classroom. I don't think you should compare yourself to others. Do what you think is best for you. Its okay to fail at something. Have alternative plan that you can go to if you do fail.

The only real failure is not trying. Generally speaking the students who get the highest scores and grades are not necessarily the "smartest", which is actually subjective since there are different kinds of "intelligences", but those who work the hardest. It is true that some people are more "gifted" - another subjective term - than others, but even among them the lazy ones do not do so well as the ones who work harder. So I have to disagree a little bit from the Sorcerer. You can be good enough, but sometimes you just have to try harder, sometimes a lot harder. If something is easy for you, good. But maybe that is not a good thing because it means that the material is not challenging enough. If the material seems hard, that may seem bad, except that it's not. If it is hard it is because it is supposed to be hard. So whatever the material seems to you, do more, try harder. The Sorcerer has helped me a lot just with his workbook recommendations alone. I buy them and do the exercises, all of them. Then I look for more, and do them. The result is, well, better results. I pay special attention to my wrong answers. I look for why the answers are wrong and then try to avoid what makes them wrong. Usually they are the smallest errors!! That's life. You just have to keep at it and try harder. There is no nut that cannot be cracked. Just ask any mechanic. But sometimes it takes a lot more effort and different techniques to crack them. Whatever you do, don't quit, don't give up. The only true failure is not trying. The cure is trying harder. Hope somebody benefits from what I am saying.

Oh my gosh. In my first college physics class I was in such a bad spot in life - family issues - and I didn’t have ANY motivation to perform well in the subject I’ve studied and loved since I was a kid. I’d go into exams and just wing it, get a C or a B if lucky, and call it a day. I can still feel the despondency in my heart to this day, but I also take solace in knowing that I’ve come a long way since then (I’ve found the math sorcerer, after all;) ). I also believe that we as individuals are our own harshest critics; I ran into that physics professor a few months ago actually, and he had a very different perspective on how I performed given the circumstances, which is also to say that a fellow classmate is going to remember their own mistakes well before they even notice the mistakes you made in the past, much less judge you for it. Don’t be so hard on yourself!

Good video and I agree! I would add further that something else that would make me feel better is that if I know I put in the effort but still didn’t do as well, I would remind myself there are other things I could effortlessly do better in than those I am comparing myself to. Every person is different and everyone wishes they could have more or less of something. The key is to be accepting of yourself

What happens if you are really not good enough? What do you know if you should keep insisting when all your classmates seem to be so smart compared to you and you just keep falling behind? How do you recover those 5, 10 years they spent focusing on what you need to be good at now, while you were doing something different?
I don't know man. I normally wouldn't talk about this, but im really struggling these days and this place is anonymous enough. I don't have any motivation left, I have no friends, I failed many subjects even though I didn't do anything but do school this semester. I'm tired of talking to my professors and getting that look of "I wish I could tell her to stop wasting her time in this major, but I can't". I know that the only way to get better at something is to keep trying, but I don't know, I constantly feel like I'm running out of time and I don't even know where I want to get or what I want to do in the future. Currently, the plans that usually motivate me don't motivate me anymore.
I'm just tired of always lacking. I want to just be good at one thing.

It's 4:30 im writing a book about satisfaction, creating an individual and being present. Maybe i can change a little how you see this feeling of not being good enough, or defeat, that can happen to any individual daily. Probably one fact im telling you is that we can all reach the equal amount of skills if we add all our skills aka. our potential and that intelligence is relative. Most people reach very hard goals with specialization, but what about people, that are more on the general learning route of things? Well, people can grow in most intellect skills, specialized people have the progressive overload and maybe the comfort from knowing exactly what to do next and getting professional in one thing faster. Basically progressive overload is a fitness term but im tired cant think right, hard things start getting simpler. So whats the advantage of non-specialized individuals, they burnout less, they adapt to the adaptivity and this is where is start hypothesizing, get smarter and more satisfied with everything. In all aspects ive wrote that not the goal is the satisfaction, infact its the ambition of getting there. Yea alot of mixed sciences in this writing but, whatever this isnt my native language so dont criticize my grammer.

I sucked at math. I had attention issues. I got that fixed but I still struggle horribly. I want to get to where I can understand my mathematical physiology (MP) better. I am definitely worried that I may not succeed. The math often taught is quite simple compared to the math that goes into the actual work of MP. But it has such revolutionary potential for global health. That pushes me forward even if there's a barely nonzero likelihood that I will contribute anything to the greater project.

TL;DR: Don't envy. Find yourself. Play into your strengths.
I disagree with your statement at 3:00 - "keep pushing" is a very bad advice, in my opinion. No one should keep bashing their head against the wall. Instead find something, that you are actually excelling in. What is "not good enough" is relative and only in our heads. Sure, it does translate to better niche job opportunities in the market to have straight As, but one test does not make you a failure. In reality, grades are an incredibly poor metric to the excellence in the real world which is so much more complex. Many times there are teacher's biases involved in marking your test anyway. I know from my own experience, I was marked harshly because I was seen a nerd, so that I would challenge myself. Which is, in my opinion a double-edged sword. Both pushing and pulling somebody to be excellent without support is a waste of energy and just brow-beating. Sometimes we are just not good enough to do something and that's ok. We are better at something else. There are very few people that are amazing at everything. Don't keep pushing, don't be so envious not being able to compare yourself to people who have a better knack at some topic. Because the more you fight that, the more miserable you will be. Admit it to yourself, that there will always be someone better. Find something that comes to you naturally, excel at that.
Being good enough, is being humble. If you have food, roof over your head, stable income, hobbies and people around you. You are good enough. Being on top of the iceberg, by definition, is not "good enough". Bill Gates is not good enough. Bill Gates is on top. Albert Einstein is not good enough, he is on top. Leonard Euler, Gauss, and other famous scientists are not good enough, they are on top. The universe had to align itself for these people exist and excel. As we are on the math related channel. The Lebesgue metric of excellence has many variables as input, not just effort. It's not a single variable problem. It's very much dependent on so many external variables (timing, upbringing, parents, genetics, geography, etc.) that are not in our hands to do anything about it.
From the very early age we live in the bubble of "either we must excel, or we are failures". You must get As (in everything the school system shoves down your throat), even in the topics that really bother us and are a waste of time and a mental burden. I don't want to get into the whole schooling system, and how incredibly outdated it is nowadays. But this is a societal problem.

Well the I tell myself that there are too many factors to simply draw a conclusion about your own intellect or capacity in general. That I can be very surprised by people deemed unintelligent as much as with people deemed with a superior intellect. That it's really only after taking a step back from all the decisions that I made in my life that it would be possible to determine how great I really am. Until then I can only guess and bet on whether or not I could potentially get a specific result on something specific and live with the illusion that I made up from that result. That illusion being perhaps part of my own myth. It's not over until it's over. We all have that benefit of a doubt throughout our lives!!!

Could you please make a roadmap video of learning mathematics for AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning etc.

Where was this video 2 years ago. Now I have messed up my high school (by achieving 70%. And no college here accepts this low score. Now my parents don't want me to repeat this year one more time and give entrance exams one more time.)
What happened is that in my 11th grade (12th in UK), it was like the 3rd month and I was working really hard and putting in my all and was still achieving 80-95 out of 300. And my friends on the other hand were achieving 120, 150, 180. And they were securing top ranks in class. I was working hard. But still I was behind them all. Then one day my physics teacher told me (in parent teacher meeting. In front of other parents) that, " What is your worth to do engineering?. I'll say things to you that you'll stop coming here" and I was sad, angry, confused. Why would he say this to me. And after that I just stopped putting efforts. I was in and out of the class. No extra work done. Just come to class listen to teachers teaching, make notes and go home and forget all of it. And now here I am sitting after completing my high school thinking that maybe I could've proved him wrong. But now what's done is done and I have to accept that. But still I feel like if I gave it my all just once more it would be all right and everything would be good. But my parents don't want me to repeat the same year again.

@@ilikecommenting6849 here in India. Things work a little differently. You are supposed to have a good job and other stuff till you're 30 and marry and have kids and all ( atleast in my family). When I told them I wanted to repeat this year, my father didn't say anything and was like do what you want, but my mother was so angry and said you'll waste 1 year. People will get ahead of you. You will be 26 passing out from college. And other things. Basically from what I understood. She was mentioning butterfly effect. How something small can lead to exponential changes. And I accepted that and am waiting for colleges I can get into based on my merit marks. I want to pursue AI/ML or AI/Data sciene. But if I don't get that, I will consider repeating this year once more. Most likely my parents won't agree. But still there's some hope

As a 35 year old who has done Math but is super rusty from not using I would love to relearn it: Linear Algebra, Calc I - Calc 3, DiffEq, Stats and Probability.
I have a family now, so I don't have as much time. Maybe about an hour per day. Can you recommend me a system to relearn math please?

Is not good enough for the professor or ourselves?

  • @krwada

The key word here is race.
I am not talking about being endowed. However this ia component of race. I am talking about the race to better oneself. This is one of the true aspects of enjoining yourself into the race of mankind.
We, here in the USA take this to heart. This is what competition is all about.
To be frank., nothing prepares ANYONE for the race. I am talking about the race to become better.
One of the MOST insidious things about all of this is that the BAR to become better is always getting lifted higher and higher.
For example ... I am most certain that you can look upon what is demanded of students of today, and what they are required to learn just to get a passing grade today as compared to what was required a few decades ago.
Alas ... this is the deal of what we require of ourselves.
And to a great exten, you know what? In my opinion, this is really a good thing.

But if you talk to some old timers they will tell you the bar is lower. Many of the math textbooks from 60 or 70, even a 100 years ago were actually much harder to grasp. Everything is relative.

That "teacher" that gave out the dollar bill was lousy. Making people compete for money when the reward should be learning. Prime example of what NOT to do!

  • @JJGhostHunters
    @JJGhostHunters Před 22 dny

I love this channel, but I don't agree with the premise that people getting better grades or being able to solve problems faster are "better" or "smarter" than others. I also do not agree that we should strive to be "better" than others for simply bragging rights. This is coming from someone that maintained a 4.0 gpa while earning a bachelor of science, master of engineering and PhD in electrical and computer engineering.
Anyway, these are simply my opinions and I am aware that they are not popular ones today.

If you got a 76 and he wrote good job number 1 , it wasn't a bad grade compared to the whole class and 2, he must have liked something about what you did...point is , you were close and it probably didn't take long to get your score up a few more points WHICH was really all that it needed to be and MAYBE not even: as in in curve 76 is some kind of a B....Your story is thus not comparable to most people your talking to ....People who do bad in that situation , ACTUALLY DO BAD!!! And actually feel STUPID for real... THESE cases take a whole lot longer to resolve than did you and NOT GIVING UP IS A WHALE SIZE HARDER DEAL.... it happened to me at that TIME early in college about the time you start hitting difficult courses...i thought I wasn't smart because I wasn't able to be like Spock from star trek....Then I discovered that the people who did WELL studied... That was something I just hadn't really done , for school anyway and it took probably well OVER a year until I learned HOW.
