Great player, pioneer of thrash and even greater guy. Met the band at a record signing for Pleasures of the Flesh in Phoenix at Zia records. Stopped the band on their way into the store (through back door) and asked if they wanted smoke a joint. We smoked and then while in line I asked Rick Hunolt if he did stronger things while I slid a baggie across the table. He grabbed the bag and thanked me. Later that night when I got to the show, Souza was riding his bike in the parking lot looking for me (he even remembered my name). The band wanted to know if I had brought any more fun stuff. After telling him yes, he took me to the tour bus and we partied before the show. I got a backstage pass and got to watch the show while sitting on the side of the stage. FUCKING AWESOME. Then Gary and Rick invited me to after party at a random house and we stayed up all night talking about music and life!! Saw them again on FABULOUS DISASTER tour and it was a repeat!!! THEY FUCKING REMEMBERED ME and my gifts!!! One of the big 2, Slayer and Exodus!!! The only true thrash bands who stayed true to the genre (mostly...but more than any other bands). THOSE BANDS BLED THRASH METAL!!!!
@@WhoisVinnie I don't think it is the short hair per se. But this 97 pic with the awful goatee is just wrong. Goatees look cool when combined with mustache, but without it must be the worst possible style of facial hair ever. Hetfield looked his worst with the goatee. Lemmy was all about the look and he never wore a goatee. Probably found those "goatee geezers" running around quite amusing.
it was the late 90s. I think Gary was just trying to keep with the times. Just like the "Hot Topic Arch Enemy" look he had with "Tempo of the Damned". Gary only started dressing old school again with the whole retro thrash boom in the late 2000s.
A class act, and truly one of the most important members in the "Founding Fathers" group in thrash metal. Music needs more Gary Holts. On another note: Paul Baloff got a raw deal. He wasn't a clean, or well trained singer by any means. But his brutal, psychotic style was one of a kind and he made it work. I love BBB. It's a shame it couldn't work in the end. RIP Paul. Kirk Hammet has a great video somewhere on youtube where he gives his thoughts on Paul right after he passed. Its a beautiful story about Paul, if anyone reading this is interested. It's titled "Memories of Paul Baloff by Kirk Hammett" on the Metallica home channel.
I love the old Exodus albums but damn, The Atrocity Exhibition Exhibit A is probably my favorite “newer” Exodus albums! It’s just so damn brutal start to finish! Definitely some of their best guitar work is on that album. A masterpiece!
The early stuff was great, but the rebirth in 2004 with Tempo of the damned marked some of the greatest stuff Gary ever wrote IMO. If my guitar playing had a soul,Gary Holt would be my spirit animal. Certainly my biggest riff writing influence.
Gary Holt is amazing. Such a good player. Rick was always my favourite though. Not as technical but more melodic. The best duo in thrash for sure though.
That exodus duo was one of the best, pioneers in the thrash scene and definitely have few peers!!!! However, IMHO, I WILL GO TO MY GRAVE TELLING ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN, HANNEMAN AND KING WERE MY FAVORITE THRASH DUO!!! It goes without saying Hanneman was the heart and souls of the sound with Lombardo, but there is no Slayer without King and Tom. (Just like there is no Slayer without Jeff and Dave!!!!) They changed the thrash scene with Reign in Blood and set the bar SOOOOO high, it's hard to argue it has ever been surpassed. It just sucks that the pioneers of thrash, for the most part, stopped pushing the envelope the same way it had been pushed from the NWOBHM/Punk influences with albums like Kill 'Em All. The guys who created thrash didn't take the time and effort to take it to new heights and despite lots and lots of great thrash that followed, it would have been SOOOOO great if the early pioneers didn't jump ship so fast and make excuses about "we can't keep getting faster" and "heavy is just as cool as ..........NO IT FUCKING WASNT, IT ISNT AND NEVER WILL BE!!! It was a moment in time that presented an opportunity but the guys who could have taken it to greater and greater heights bailed, posed and forgot the kids who made the scene by trading tapes, going to bars to see the bands with 15-50 people (and 3 or 4 chicks) and telling their friends Zeppelin is yesterday's news and Maiden and Priest were lightweights. To me only two bands tried hard to stay true to the cause, with a few missteps...Slayer and Exodus!!!! Early 80's thrash forever!!!!!

@@superstan3290 he was with the rest of Slayer and all were pretty nice and even took pictures. Lol brought Tom Araya breakfast to his room the morning after the show as I was on shift that day. It was a once a life time thing for sure!
Basically every 80's thrash metal band that didnt quit during the 90's downtuned their songs, to stay with the trends. I hate that. My first thrash album will be recorded in E Standard tuning. The modern trends can kiss my ass, and people dont know what they wanna hear until they hear it.
He made a recent statement regretting his neglect of Exodus during his time in Slayer. Somehow I don't buy that; I really think he would have loved to be in Slayer forever.
