I agree Berry Gordy was completely knowledgeable about great music, but also bottom line took advantage of singer's & group's money on a regular basis. Stating that he was getting their performances to perfection. In which he helped them to Excel to their greatest accomplishments. But to take advantage of their money continually regardless, year's on end he should of been prosecuted. But he did have contracts which should of been Overseen by attorneys. So sad for many groups he took advantage of.

Barry Gordy single handedly responsible in making Diana Ross to be The Diana Ross the world came to know. Her career, her fame, her status and her wealth today are all because of Barry. In this lifetime, Diana owes Barry the world.

In the end, after using "The Queen of Motown" Gordy kicked her to the curb & under the bus, that's when she left Motown & signed up with RCA Records for a reportedly 20 million dollars. Berry had robbed her down to her last $200,000.00 & refused to give her a raise, so she said, "FY" & left. He never believed she would leave so when her contract was up for renewal, Gordy offered her 15% of Motown Records to come back & the rest is history. Now, she is worth over $250 million for 60 years of work, which is peanuts compared to the like of Nicki Minaj, who's worth over two billion dollars for the short time she's been performing.

Berry Gordy, got what he wanted from those groups, unfortunately Gordy didn't want to school them on the business side, so that Motown Records would reek the benefits to his Empire, He would only go so far to teach them what he wanted them to know. That's with any record company, This is The Status Quo. His Record Company is no different than Capital Records or any other record company in the music industries etc. It's to bad, that the corporate greed in any company with executives and many other companies are this way. Company Greed, has existed for decades in this country, and still is to this day, and will never stop. Unless federal government steps in To Keep Them In Check. This will always be a fact of life in a Capitalistic country. So The Bottom LINE. Berry Gordy is a low down Boule`, helping to keep blaks down, while exploiting their talents. It's not surprising that he is STILL alive as of February 13, 2023!

He was a business man. I do think his intentions were good; I do not think he set out to steal from his artists or to black ball them in the industry. He just got to a point where his own financial status became more important than the people making the money for him.

Gordy did nothing different from his contemporaries...it's a rough business..but a couple of hits could keep you working on the road..where performers make their money all their life.....you were not forced to work for motown.......

You could make the argument they wouldn't have been famous without motown but then again Motown wouldn't have been much without the artist either. by the 1960's though they should have learned from the broke artists of the 1950's that you never let anyone be in charge of your money.
