Mum tries Mac OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion (2012)

  • Finally an operating system she really likes and is possibility her favorite! The latest version of Mac (10.8 Mountain Lion) has everything she wants. Mac doesn't change dramatically over time like Windows does (e.g. windows 8) and she says she likes the look of it... better than xp!!! Oh and possibly even better than Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon Edition! Remember the start menu that she never wants to part with? The dock is starting to grow on her as a viable alternative so maybe she will end up tossing the start menu into the trash can ;)
    Tasks Given:
    - What time is it?
    - Write, save and open a text document
    - Maximize a Window
    - What is 48 * 32
    - Customize the way your computer looks
    - Explore the operating system yourself
    - Turn off your computer
The mother in this video only ever uses Windows XP running with the classic win95 theme. Would you like to see her try out other operating systems such as Linux, Mac or Windows systems throughout history... Or maybe even Debian? Then give your suggestions in the comments section.
Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows.

My dad had a heck of a time trying to learn Linux or Windows, but I sat him down with an old mac of mine and he picked it up almost immediately. He literally used my old mac until it quit working (it had long since stopped receiving updates because it was one of the old PPC macbooks). I have no doubt that if the computer were still working, he'd still be using it. I'll probably end up giving him my macbook pro at some point in the future because he really loves the OS X experience.

Thank you for saying Macs are expensive and not overpriced. It's a fact that they're VERY expensive, but to the right person they can be worth every penny. I spent £999 on my iMac back in August 2010 and have never regretted it since. Came with Snow Leopard now running Mountain Lion without a hiccup. Truly the best computer I've owned. They're expensive but have great longevity and can still be relevant 5 years later.

you have to download third party to use it.

truthfully using ONLY windows and 1 game you aren't able to play it, ...
you need to download drivers and shit for OS to even work normally.
and yes windows is best gaming platform FOR now gaming platform is getting to linux.

Actually windows is the only OS that doesn't has it's own drivers, linux has it's own but it can also use other drivers it's called "non free" even if they are free, but it's just that isn't made by Linux community.
even mac I heard has it's own drivers.
and no Windows does not have it's own drivers.
and about gaming you are just a morron I said it's moving.
not that it's there as when more than 50% of it will be there it'll be there it won't be moving any more.

"Write, save, and open a text document" Calculate ***X*** .Just to make the vids a bit more interesting, try changing the tasks. E.G. 1. Turn on and login to the computer. (Or start the VM, insert the live usb) 2. If the time is incorrect, Change the time to the correct time. 3. Create a new folder and put a program/document into the new folder. Just a thought to make the vids a bit more interesting.

+ mail stopped shutdown because you left the initial setup window of the app - mac prevents you from loosing settings.
As per pricing - it's not "extremely expensive". If you look for real equivalent of branded PC. If you compare branded notebooks - very often macs are cheaper - that's just a quality limits + by using native hardware you'll enjoy some specialties you'll never give up like multitouch.

***** Which DISTRIBUTION is the most advanced?*
Sorry for not using 100% precise terms, I was too quick. Advanced the way I see it means which one comes pre-packaged with the most features. Chrome OS could clearly fit someone perfectly but it will never be advanced because of that. Anyway, having used Linux a lot, Mac OS a lot and (unfortunately) Windows a lot, I will have to say that Mac OS appears to be the most advanced one due to it including so much useful software. But some Linux distros made for specific purposes also include a tremendous amount of software, so I don't know, actually. Mac OS does at least have a far more advanced Desktop environment, as there are really a lot of small features and details in it that you just can't find equivalents to in Linux and Windows.

I really enjoyed your series and I hope you keep at it.
As a Linux user,I was perplexed that you showed the virtual desktops and other windowing effects in Mac but could not be bothered to show them in Linux.
Also,as time goes on it will be less important that things be comparable with Windows. I've not used a Windows program in 9 years and I've done fine. I have the Linux equivalent programs (- Wine) in my operating system (Ubuntu with Gnome classic) and have been happy as a bunny in clover.

She likes how modern and simple it looks. Although it took her time to get used to she still prefers it over windows 8 due to how cartoonish and old fashioned windows 8 looks.

Just a note: both Apple and Microsoft have made large and decisive leaps in their operating systems. Mac did this when it went from OS 9 to OS X, by changing from it's custom, built-from-the-ground-up OS to a Unix base, easing the transition by giving users Classic mode for awhile. Windows 95 was Microsoft's first BIG leap, ME grafted the features of the upcoming XP onto Win98, and Win8 is Win7 with a tablet UI and some under-the hood improvements. Big changes happen to all of them, tho.

Trust me... It's not an easy task. It was emulated in vmware but I had to patch vmware so it would trick OSX mountain lion into thinking it was a Mac to bypass the "am I booting on a Mac computer if not I need to have an error" check. It's not worth it though if you are thinking of using Mac on windows. It's ultra laggy!

As soon as I saw launchpad I was instantly reminded of fedora... At the same time though its also very similar to ios on iPhone and ipad... The question is what system first had that fedora/big icons look?

I see you left out the Mac mini from your Australian desktop Mac price chart. For the record, a mini is au$699 for the base model. It's probably the go-to model for potential Windows switchers like Diana.
Great series though! I really enjoy these. As a tech geek myself I often don't think about how an operating system impacts people's lives, especially the inexperienced or non-tech-savvy ones. Your videos really provide a look into how 'casual' computer users experience OSs.

That's not a very fair comparison...
The start bar in Windows 7+ is Microsoft's version of the dock.
The Start menu is for when you want to go into other programs you haven't pinned or "docked" to your startbar, in OS X's case, you would go into finder.

With magic mouse it is easier to access launcher with a flick of the finger than to go and click on the dock. I also used to think it redundant but now I do it all the time.

Truth is as a Mac user for close to 20 years, I noticed more changes between Mountain Lion and some of the newer "California parks" named operating systems. El Captain (the new one) is rather interesting. There's a lot that translates over from the "Cat family" versions but there's also some interesting differences in regards to the interface.

I'm a Mac user and I have had Mountain Lion on my system previously, I personally prefer Mac OS to others, just because that's how I feel about it, I know there's so much competition between Windows and Mac OS and so many people hate MAC OS, but I think people get far too carried away with their comments about specific operating systems.

That's what I hate about people who think one's better over the other. It's just a preference thing. That's what people need to realize. I'm a fan of both. You received: 10,000+ points for your awesome point.

I think you instruct her with a bias towards a certain solution, which in turn makes the task at hand harder to do. Your mom is surprisingly clever when given the chance to be, when it comes to figuring out sometimes arbitrary UI-decisions. I'm enjoying these videos though.
