    My guinea pig when we first got her and her 2 other piggy friends she was the skinniest one out of them all. We got them 5-6 months ago and they haven’t been anywhere near any males. I don’t know about their past home and if there were any males. She is HUGE!!! Only about a week ago she was still the skinniest one. All of a sudden she started going up 30 grams every week. Do you think she’s pregnant?? I don’t think that’s possible since I’m pretty sure once a female mates with a male it takes 60 to 70 days before the female gives birth. Though it’s been more like 180 days. Do you think she’s pregnant or just fat. Also she is a pear shape with two giant lumps on each side. Her underside is very round as well.

    Should you clean your pregnant guinea pigs cage when they are near the end of it? I heard some where that you should not get ride of her smell or her set up but I don't think this is true. If you should clean it still should I leave her in it and just change the fleece?

    • @jbjacobs9514
      @jbjacobs9514 Před 3 lety +4

      This is a myth. The only thing is a male should NOT be with a female during or after birth. They can get pregnant immediately and it is very dangerous for the female. They will still handle, clean, and take care of their babies even if you hold the babies or if you insert your smell. There will be a placenta for each baby (she will generally eat that but you can get rid of them after if she doesn't), and she will eat the afterbirth. If she doesn't eventually, you can get rid of it, but it is best to leave it for her.

      @@alysatran3852 It is extremely rare for a guinea pig to eat its pup but it is possible. I had a gp that kind of freaked when her littermate gave birth and she gave birth too early and it was stillborn (sadly). But she did not eat it. I would take her to a vet if possible to check her out but you should just change her litter and make sure she has enough vitamin c and has not lost too much blood. Leafy greens is normally very good for piggies, especially pregnant piggies (including kale). I am so sorry for your piggy. • @alysatran3852
      @alysatran3852 Před 3 lety

      keep the male and the female separated just in case. if you have any male babies, separate them from their mother as soon as they hit 3 weeks because they’re able to get their mom pregnant and pregnancy is VERY difficult for moms, especially if they’re back to back

      @alysatran3852 Před 3 lety +2

      @@anyanicholls6131 yes because right after the pregnancy she will be in heat. meaning she can get pregnant if she and the dad.. um yeah you get the idea. pregnancies are stressful so i would also watch the babies and mamma for a few days after the birth just in case anything goes wrong. and once the baby boars (if mamma has any) are old enough, you can introduce them to the dad. if you have 2 cages you can put them side by side so they can see each other! unless the dad can jump over or the babies can crawl through the grids it’s fine. the dad will try to mount the baby boar and that’s normal. it’s just to make sure the baby knows dad is the dominant piggy. do keep a close eye on them though. males are more violent than girls. that’s just my experience. but definitely don’t put the dad in the cage with mom while and after she’s given birth. you’ll eventually have to get 2 big enough cages for both sexes though.
