  • Watch as we use Oramask 813 as a masking to paint multiple colors on this intricate sign. This product is ideal for painting the carved areas without the hassle of getting paint on the other surfaces.
    With this product, it is highly recommended to use a down cut bit when rough cutting. We followed up by using an Amana Tools 60* degree v-bit.
    * Please Note: This sign WAS NOT carved using a down cut bit. We used a two-flute straight bit for the roughing pass. We are waiting on a new bit to come in, as our old one is duller than a butter knife.

    The edges are too rough; that is the result of using the wrong bit. When doing this type of work use a "Down spiral or Compression bit" it will leave your edges smooth and crisp. When applying the Oramask use a heat gun to warm the glue and go over the entire surface while using a wad of paper towels to press down with a circular motion as to increase the adhesion of the mask.

      You’re right, an endmill would work better for the Oramask. However, this is a result of using a vbit and not an endmill for the edges. Endmills won’t capture all the detail, unless using a 1/32”, which chances are, will break. I do like the idea of using the head gun for better adhesion. I’ve never heard of using a wad of paper towels. I’ll have to try that.

      @@idrewwood yeah, however I have been using a 1/16 end mill but a "Down Cut Spiral end Bit" That way the edges of the mask do not get pull up and cut into strips. Here is a video of my channel. i would like to send you photos of my CNC work and exchange ideas. my= mtaberni@socal.rr.com.

    I'm trying to work out what you did.
    Sprayed black, added Oramask, cut G & painted white, cut Go Dawg & painted red. Some sanding, sealed with spray. Didn't see removing Oramask., Saw loads of red debris in over dark background. Not sure if black or green Oramask 😟🤔🤔

    • @idrewwood
      @idrewwood  Před 2 lety

      Paint the black, lay the oramask (blue), paint the white, then red…the design has a lot of spots in it that gives it a splattered look. Sanding is done to clean up some of the edges. Check out the link to see the finished product.

    Make sure to use the Oracal brand only. VIVID peels off within a few minutes every time no matter what you do it.

    First of all, amazing final product. My question if you don’t mind, how do you set up for the keyhole hanger pockets? Is it a saved svg that you import for each project? Or just a quick double rectangle you do on each one? Thanks in advance bro.

    • @idrewwood
      @idrewwood  Před 3 lety +2

      I had* a template that I created that I imported in to each project and adjusted as needed. I bought a new computer and lost it due to my old one crashing!

    Subbed....where did you get that image with the splattering around the edges or did you design it? Thx, Mark

    • @idrewwood
      @idrewwood  Před 4 lety

      Mark Crook the person I made it for actually found it and sent it to me. I had to do an image trace to get it, which was tricky to capture all the detail, since it wasn’t in SVG format.

    • @markcrook5935
      @markcrook5935 Před 4 lety +1

      American South Designs “image trace”? I only have Carbide Create.....could it be done there?

    • @idrewwood
      @idrewwood  Před 4 lety

      Mark Crook image trace is the same as but map tracing. I haven’t used Carbide Create, so I’m not positive if you can.

    • @mypalvega
      @mypalvega Před 4 lety

      Mark Crook carbide create wont let you do it. But you can use adobe illustrator and do a live trace , then export it to carbide n you are good..

    I didn't catch how you did the section where the red/white intersect. Please give me some insight...

    • @idrewwood
      @idrewwood  Před 3 lety

      It’s been a while, I’ll have to go back and watch the video again. I think I cut the outer border first, painted it, then cut a shallower section for the white, then painted it...carefully.

    try using a down cut router bit next time it won't cut up the Oramask as bad

    • @idrewwood
      @idrewwood  Před 3 lety

      I use downcuts for clearance passes. But this required vbits, which unfortunately can raise the oramask, especially in thin areas

    can polyurathane be used instead of shellac?

    • @idrewwood

      Yes, but shellac dries really quickly compared to poly, except for water based

      Oramask works better with a downcut bit, versus a 60* vbit. Even with it looking like it does, there would be no way to paint all the splatter marks on the sign, without getting paint on the black.
