Tabassum was born on 9 July 1944 in Mumbai, maharastra, India. Her father Ayodhyanath Sachdev was an Indian freedom fighter, journalist and an author. Her mother was Asghari Begum.
Tabassum had two elder brothers and one elder sister. One of her brothers’ names is Jagit. Tabassum is the youngest among her siblings. She is the youngest among three children of her parents.
She is married to Vijay Govil, elder brother of TV actor Arun Govil. The couple has a son together named Hoshang Govil, who is an actor and film director. Tabassum has two granddaughters Khushi Govil and Krishna Govil. Krishna is an actor and content creator.
