  • I fired the Dentron up on 40m 7295 AM signal.
    200 watts base AM.
    Dentron did just fine.
After about 3 minutes at 200 watts I used to smell the old resistors BURNING.
The new .5 ohm resistor is installed now underneath.
A 10 watt resistor. Formerly Dentron used 2 one ohm resistors in parallel
for .5 ohms and this was about 2 watts dissipation value.
I did not try it full power up to 1 KW to see if it would hold up.
    NO drama needed.
    yet.

I've been advised not to exceed 250w carrier on AM with 4x572b . I followed that advice and my tubes didn't last very long . 200 hrs or so . Psvane tubes . Thinking of testing one at a time like you did . At least i could compare them . Way to go , I knew you were going to succeed..

Wow that is good advice. Maybe 100 watts tops? Or avoid am usage?

@@moviestudioland I would avoid AM to be honest, but that sucks . That's with Pissvain tubes installed . Never had the good tubes myself. I think the amp doesn't move enough air for AM.

yeah I see your point. Why burn an amp on AM?

I like the clean SOUND of AM. Always have. Get tired of SSB sound. But with a new receiver and maybe if each side had IC-7300's the SSB would sound almost like AM quality.

@@moviestudioland AM is where it's at . SSB is great if you like chasing drifters, guys with misaligned " unlocked clarifiers " trancievers and don't mind listening to people off frequency in a group or dx . Ya SSB is so much better , foowy. SSB can get it done when am won't but just barely. Those 572b tubes in your amp passed what I would call a torture test and likely would hold up to 250 deadkey on am . Keep it short and mind the heat . My experience is with pisvane tubes . They made 1500+ I ran it to pep at 1000 max and 200 deadkey . Didn't last me but days before falling down to 600 pep max now .
