  • Big Idea Design Vs Tactile Turn Bolt Action EDC Pens -
    Showdown Between The Big Idea Design EDC Pocket Pro Vs Tactile Turn Bolt Action Short EDC Pen.
    Both EDC Pens are made from titanium construction, with bolt action deployment. The Big Idea Design EDC pocket pro adjustable to fit over a hundred refill cartridges. The Tactile Turn you buy to take your favorite ink cartridge. With so many choices in the EDC pen game, it's getting harder to pick the best for your money.

    The biggest difference with those pens... is that one is circumcised while the other is el natoralle, lol

    With regards to Big Idea Design and how often people change refills, you'd be surprised. I know plenty of people that switch things up regularly for different types of writing and even drawing. Personally, I prefer that flexibility. Also, they got a Kickstarter right now for a Slim version that looks interesting.

      Ya, I guess for some the flexibility would be nice. And it is an nice option for sure. Both companies now have a slim, very competitive 🤣

      If I'm going to spend that much money on a pen it is reassuring to know I have the flexibility to use different style refills. I picked up the slim thinking I'd like it better than the original and turns out I prefer the bigger barrel and the overall asthetic.

    I think it’s funny that big idea design charges the same price as TT. I’ve been working in machine shops for 30 years and I can tell you this, I know that the outsourced machine shops in China don’t charge the hourly rate the shop I work in and I know the machinists in China don’t make an hour what I’m paid. So they pick up the pens for probably $5.00 a piece and sell them for a hundred dollars a pen talk about markups

    I have a tactile turn bolt short slim, that I’ve had and used everyday for a year or so. Personally I really like it. I never really though of the the the bolt taking much lots of pressure to deploy, until you mentioned it. I think it’s got a satisfying sort of fidget feel to it. Never had anything to compare it to though. Kinda wanna try the other models/sizes, but don’t wanna spend the money lol. The milled texture of it is really nice. I’m not sure I would like the smother finish’s on other pens now that I’ve gotten so used to it. While it’s expensive, I can honestly say it the most satisfying $90.00 I’ve ever wasted, I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

    I noticed some grinding in my Big Idea Design Bolt Action pen and realised the bolt pin had unscrewed slightly, exposing the threads, which were grinding against the edge of the slot. The grinding ceased immediately after I screwed the bolt pin back down. It would be interesting to know if you had the same problem too.

    Don't have neither of these, but I did find the BigIDesign marketing for "most refill friendly pen" funny for the exact reason you mentioned.
    BTW Monte Werde Gel (Fine) is my favorite refill for the pens that usually come with Schmidt 500.
    Thanks for the video 💪💪

    I contacted customer service at TT 2 days ago and still haven’t heard from them. Recently bought one of their pens at Tactile Turn, have problem with the Titanium Side Click (slim version) for the clicking mechanism inconsistency unreliable in locking.

      I’m sorry you got a bad pen, there’s nothing worse than spending your hard earned money and getting something not as advertised. But the good news is, I have had to use customer service myself a couple weeks ago. It took a few days to get back to me, but where very good and fast at solving the problem. I’m sure they are also busy with x-may too. I hope they take good care of you, good luck! 🍀

    Interesting thoughts, thanks. I came out the other way because of the flexibility of the BID pen but I think it's one of those questions where either answer is good and it's hard to say what's better other than what's better for the person making the call. I posted this comment to note that I haven't found any roughness or grinding in the BID bolt action pen. I didn't disassemble it and clean it out, as some people have done. I did put a drop or two of the light Nano-Lube in the bolt channel. If I had a "complaint" about the BID pen specifically, it would be that the tip is larger in diameter than I like best, noticeably bigger than many other pens including the TT, and I wear XL gloves so it's not that I have small hands. That might be sort of the price of the refill flexibility, but I notice that BID has a new "slim" bolt action pen launching now on Kickstarter (Sept/Oct 2022) that doesn't have the oversize tip end. I've contributed or whatever it is that you're doing when you don't buy something on Kickstarter 🙂 and am looking forward to that one.

      Thank you for watching! Ya, that’s why I did a disclaimer. There will be some differences if batch’s, and some rough ones can get by QC. I have the slim tactile turn on its way, and I will get BID slim when it comes out also.

    Really curious about how are the tip wiggle for both pens. I've noticed the BID pens state that they have a design that would minimize tip wiggle while the TT does not. I know this highly depends on its refills, but how are the two pens? This would be an important factor when I'm choosing to buy a 100$ pen.

    I specifically only use Big Idea Design pens. The Bolt and the Pocket Pro. I switch refills daily, again both for work and for personal use. The confidence and smoothness of these pens is just on another level. I myself do not like the Tactile Turn pens as they are specifically for one type of refill. Once you try the Bigi Design pens you can't go back.

    you can take a spring out and compress it for a short time in your fingers and it'll loosen up.

    • @EDCTantoKnives
      @EDCTantoKnives  Před rokem

      Not really, it surprisingly is more complicated than that. A lot of the time it’s the machining inside along with the spring that makes the action. Sometimes you can just change the spring out to help, otherwise the inside machining tolerances have to change all together.

    • @pubfixture
      @pubfixture Před rokem

      @@EDCTantoKnives I only mean the the spring can loosen up. I'm not commenting on the engineering. If it's a design flaw for the bolt arm channel, then it's a design flaw. But you can soften up the spring and see if the action is more tolerable.

    • @EDCTantoKnives
      @EDCTantoKnives  Před rokem

      @@pubfixture True, but it takes a lot to soften the spring. They may be little, but a well made spring will last.

    • @EDCTantoKnives
      @EDCTantoKnives  Před rokem

      @@pubfixture I have tried it for a short time, it wasn't enough to make a difference. So it would have to be clamped for a long time to make a change. I even tried lube on the bolt, because people always recommend that when a problem seems be in the bolt. But really it's the tolerances are off. Or a different spring all together.
