Did you know that at the beginning of his career as a musician he only wrote and played instruments on other people’s recordings because he did not believe himself to be such a good singer?He also wasn’t more proliferous with studio albums because he wanted to do more R&B like Luther Vandross , but Quincy Jones kept telling him that he would be more successful as a crossover pop vocalist. Turns out Quincy was right. The pop charts showed James more love than the R&B charts did.
JMO but he was destined to hit big either way.
So sad he died 😢

It was magical during rehearsal and the actual show to see this song performed for the 1983 Academy Awards. I was a showgirl in the production number with Bernadette Peters. It was the most incredible TV experience during Hollywood days.

First time I listened to this song was when I was 6 years old (24 years ago) and i fell love, with all of James Ingram's song. I cam still fight everyone who says the 70's 80's and 90's are not the best years of music because it is. Lyrics, music and singers are just fantastic. they do it cos they love the music, not the fame and money (though it's part of it)
I didn’t know he had passed away. What a voice. I love this song so much. It’s one of those timeless songs that will be here for future generations. Make sure you have a slow dance with someone you truly love and tell them how much you love them. Even if it’s in your living room. Don’t put it off. YES! He was selling it! I thought he probably wanted a softer kiss to end the song but Patti either missed it or wasn't having it. Wonderful chemistry for sure. miss him soooo much. The way he gently strokes her arm at 3:50 and when he steps to her preparing to kiss her at 5:25 you see the passion. Just a great performance that really sells the song, the sentiment, and the singers.
I know! Was James already married at the time because this is either a great interpretation or he was deeply in love with Patti! He stares at and follows the cadence of her lips for the entirety of that time they got closer.
