They talk about the cost of living in Bangkok and around Thailand. Jim Kellett gives a tour and shows some specific examples of the cost of accommodations, transportation, and food.
Jim also gives examples of island living in Thailand. Living in a popular tourist destination like Phuket or Koh Samui will offer many amenities… but will fall in the higher cost-of-living range, while living on one of the less popular islands will offer a simpler lifestyle at a lower cost. And there are over 1,400 islands to choose from.
Living on a Thai island offers a laid-back lifestyle with stunning natural beauty, water activities, and a vibrant local culture. You can enjoy a sense of community, diverse cuisine, and, depending on the island, a choice between lively nightlife or a quiet laid-back atmosphere.
Living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, offers a unique blend of cultural richness, and a relaxed pace of life. Surrounded by mountains, the city provides a more temperate climate, and residents can enjoy a variety of traditional festivals, delicious local cuisine, and numerous outdoor activities. The cost of living is generally lower than in major cities, contributing to the city's appeal to digital nomads and retirees. Even in the popular part of town, you can find a good meal for $4 dollars or a massage for $7 dollars.
In Chiang Mai, many expats report being able to live comfortably for $1,200 per month, and nomads renting month-to-month, have reported living comfortably for $1,100 per month.

My budget last month in the south of Thailand was $400. $70 for electricity to run the AC 20 hours a day, No rent, $12 for internet, 60 cents for my flip phone, $2 for water, $80 fuel for car. $10 for car insurance. That's $175 without food. I eat out a lot and buy some foods for relatives. If I didn't eat restaurant food, it would be easy for me to live on $300 a month. I live on a paved road in rural Mai Seab/ Koh Khan. 1 mile to 7-11 and the freeway. 5 miles to KFC or hospital. 20 miles to Phattalung. My house is paid for.

A warning about renting ANY place in Bangkok ... electricity is very expensive. VERY. Thailand is very hot and Bangkok doesn't 'cool off' in the evening because of all the concrete that releases heat when the sun goes down. If you're a single male you should NOT be looking for a place over 42sqm because you must AIR-CONDITION it all the time when you are home. I have been in very large apartments and the Thai or Western people who live in these impressively large apartments sit in puddles of sweat because they refuse to run their air-conditioners (electricity = $$$$$). Find a modest place to live, one that is easy to air-condition - you will thank me later.
What's expensive to you? Here in Hawaii my wife and I pay on average $250 per month for electricity and we don't even use an AC in our house at all. We also pay for gas for our stove and our hot water heater and that is about $150 per month as well. So, I'm guessing in Thailand its at least that much if you're talking expensive?
BTW my wife and I are retiring to Thailand in a few years, have a conservative budget of $5K per month to live on, so should we be worried about the cost of living in Thailand?
@@brianpark-siart2216 Hawaii is America and is expensive. Thailand is SE Asia and will be less expensive for you and your wife provided you don't waste your money BUYING a condo there. My point is that Westerners who think that 'bigger is better' should know that bigger is NOT better when finding an apartment/condo to live in because electricity is very expensive in Thailand (everywhere). Your $5K/month budget should enable you to find a comfortable 15-20K baht/month place to live in Bangkok if that is your destination. You will have a great choice of condos because foolish Westerners buy condos for 'investment,' then they can't find Thais who can afford the rent. You can negotiate the rent in Thailand especially if you are willing to sign a 1-year lease.

Bangkok is the centre but you can easily live there tlwith 5000 a month budget and the electricity isn't nearly as much as 250 it more like 30 to 50 and if that in some areas.

In Chiang Mai the electricity was sometimes more than the rent if you use the aircon
I’ve lived here for 18 years, I live on Koh Phangan, I moved here when I was in my 20s it’s been crazy I could literally write a Netflix series with 18 seasons 😂I still really love it here and would never move back to the west!

Bangkok has the highest number of flyovers in the world 700+, also, it has the longest vehicle bridge in the world Bang Na expressway 55 KM not including rail bridge. Not many tourist know if you use taxi/bolt/UBER and tell the driver you would pay toll usually 50 bhat to use flyovers, you could avoid traffic and reach any destination quite fast.

My partner is from Thailand and I will join her in the next few years from the U.S. The one piece of advice I've received from her and a few other ex-pats I know is to always hire a tax accountant in Thailand who knows both Canadian/U.S. tax law alongside Thailand tax law so you have yourself covered come tax time each year (e.g., pension/SSN/investment dividends, etc.)
Don't stay longer than 6 months, no taxes lol
As an expat, married to a lovely Thai Lady, this is one of the most realistic videos on the monthly costs. Everyone's situation is different though including but not limited to lifestyle and health issues.
I rent a big house fully furnished with big yard for $140 a month in min buri, so i would even contest your minimum $1000 budget.

Chris is the walking encyclopedia of expat life in Thailand.. he really knows his stuff... and he is spot on... $1000 is a minimum that you can still have a nice life on, it ALL DEPENDS on how much you like to 'Party'! its as simple as that really!! Nightlife/Drinking is the most expensive thing of daily life in Thailand.... fortunately I have outgrown my heavy party days now and am happy just going out for a couple of beers once a week, as I am doing here in Vietnam... It's all about the food for me there so I can imagine I will be quite happy on $1000-1200 a month!
Biggest issue is there's no way to stay there a long term if you're under 50 yo. Visa options are very limited and they are cracking down on those bogus educational and Muay Thai Visas.
What i like about Thailand is the easy accessibility to healthy food and saunas in the buildings which the Philippines doesn't have.

Exactly! This video doesn’t even mention the Visa to live there long term. I can afford the appropriate $2k a month, but it’s the long term Visa that’s the issue, since I’m under 50.
@@alinet9937that’s not a realistic way to live in Thailand long term. Eventually an immigration officer will ask why you don’t have a proper long term Visa, which is hard for someone under 50.
There is the elite visa now known as the privileged. If you can afford it, it's really the only way anyone under 50 can live freely in Thailand. Unfortunately, Sept 23' is when it literally doubled in price but it's worth it without the hassle of immigration. I've been saving for 8 years and was almost ready for the move but now it's looking more like 2026 because of the Visa expense.. it's worth it, even if only for 5 years until I can work out something more permanent..
The BNK BKK doctor that did my MRI for a PSA was thai. He spoke Thai, English (Perfectly!) and Mandarin. He spent 15 to 20 minutes explaining everything. The results were delivered via encrypted email (Which I had approved ahead of time so as to avoid a trip to the hospital again as I live in Pattaya) and guess what?
The doctor CALLED me to go over the results. He was mellow, confident, happy the results were negative.
In America there would be no call, no email, have to get approval from your general doctor before seeing a specialist etc. etc. WHAT SERVICE BKK Hospitals have!

Thinking about moving to Thailand in 2-3 years after retiring. Where can i find more information on healthcare insurance including dental and vision plans? I will need private health insurance for peace of mind because i won't be eligible for Medicare yet and won't return to the US if i need healthcare services. Thank you for these informative videos.

Can you recommend a town for a retired expat that is looking for a "soft landing" spot to get acclimated with the new environment? I would like to add that my immediate needs would be several different types of nearby budget restaurants that offer a variety of different cusines. I want to feed my face without a lot of hassle. I also don't want to be up north where the burning season is worst. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Dental work is no cheaper than in the West.

Implant cost here in Thailand basically starts from around US$ 700 (depends on material brand) while dental cleaning starts from US$30.
My husband and I are talking about leaving the US once he retires. Actually he did retire once but got bored after one year and started working again.
How difficult is it to learn the Thai language? Are they generally bilingual in both Thai and English? Language barriers, if we do move away, are the biggest concerns that I have.
Canadian Expat here, now married to a Thai Lady. Learning the language is a different experience for each person. I took a 20 hour course and my wife teaches me, along with CZcamsrs. As well we speak Thai at home. So my experience is different than many however when it comes to speaking English it depends on where in Thailand you are. Touristy areas of Bangkok or Pattaya obviously no issue. Small village in Isaan different story.

Cost of living is obviously important for living in any country, but to live in another country long term you have to have a proper Visa. This video doesn’t even mention that. Getting a proper long term Visa for someone under 50 (like myself) is not easy in Thailand. If it was easy, I would of moved there already! 🤷♂️🤣
Do you find many American couples moving to Thailand at all?
Lots of Brits, Dutch, Swedes, Germans, French, Aussies, South Africans and single Americans. Not lots of Western couples, unless they are retirement age.

One significant variable is how much alcohol you drink. Alcoholism is expensive, even in Thailand.
THATS NICE. But for $2000 per month you can easily live in Portugal, Spain and many other European countries. Plus you get a free healthcare and no problem with the residency status if you are EU member.

@@JohnSkyLey that's not the point. Thailand used to be very affordable but now the cost of living there can be compared to some cheaper European countries. A decade ago the gap in terms of affordability was huge now it's marginal.

What hospitals have you been to? Just in Bangkok? ‘Cause the hospitals in Pattaya suck. Even the doctors barely spoke English and I felt that they were rude. I’m polite and soft spoken. I was having a legitimate medical emergency. They treated me like I was crazy or something and could barely communicate with me.
If you don't drink, don't party and don't have a girlfriend, then 1000 bucks a month would be enough. most of us want more in our retirement.

It's not a good idea to visit any public health care in the Western world or Europe. I for example always seek private doctors because I'm fed up with this Ignorance and fast assumption of the coronavirus when my private doctor said you have a regular long infection from the cold and here's some antibiotics and after a while I was good. Just one example I'm a person who have been in an out hospitals all my life for different reasons accidents mostly. But I'll tell you something sometimes they will leave you like that meat and don't care about you even in Norway

Hello dear sir, I am watching your videos. I have been to Thailand 4 times. But I didn't like Bangkok and other big cities in Thailand. Bangkok, in particular, is not a place to live. You and other travelers insistently talk about and praise Thailand and Bangkok. This is the wrong attitude. You can only live in small towns in Thailand. Life in big cities is very difficult and
It's boring. The climate is bad, there is noise and chaos. But all travelers constantly tell people about Thailand and recommend them to go there. This is very wrong and erroneous behavior.
Let me put living in Thailand in proper perspective. My wife of 30 years is Thai and hasn't even visited for the last 10 years, never mind thinking of returning for our golden years. And we could live like rock stars in Bangkok, but Thailand has opened its doors to all the world's bottom feeders and has become a ghetto for lost old guys (and pathetic young guys in search of themselves) and those who prey on them, the snake oil salesmen ("come on over"). I enjoyed my 2 assignments in the 80s (when single) and 90s (when married) but was happy to leave. This coming from a guy with nearly 45 years of travel to Thailand, and speaks Thai.

He doesn’t need any money and if you’ve watched his videos you must’ve have seen the many times he’s done charitable work all over Thailand.
