I was pleased to see that you prudently chose to leave the mainspring coiled inside its housing. Perhaps you may come across one of those devices clockmakers use to coil and uncoil mainsprings (or maybe you could one day fabricate one for yourself.)

The chicken should be on the center rod of the spit and the adjustable tine would stick in the chicken to hold in place to keep it spinning and getting heat on all sides. The way it was set up, the chicken just rotated on the tine and the heavier side kept facing towards the fire. Really cool device though...

A very lovely restoration and such a great thing to have on a camp fire.
A couple tips for you though.
    1. When you tried repairing the handle you got the brass way too hot, that's why you used so much solder and it wouldn't stick. When doing that kind of repair just heat the brass only as hot as it needs to be to melt the solder.
    2. Take all the mechanism back apart and strip all that grease off. You should never use it on a clock mechanism as it attracts dirt and grime and will eventually gum up the movement. If you need to lubricate it use a graphite based lubricant designed for clocks.

    • @srh1101

Another great restoration! The round object that looked like a telephone bell, was that in fact a bell? If so, was it a means to know if the spring ran down? My ears are too old to know if it was "dinging" or not! LOL

I think it only "dings" when the spring winds down to stop ... so you can wind it up again

The whole spring and gear system is very very close to the system that is in old phonographs, victrola, columbia, ext. A flat spring with a hand crank and regulator. Pretty cool really.

One of the best restorations I have ever seen, congratulations :)
Especially for soldering (whole part) and making wood part without using any special device :)

Beautiful restoration, only one mistake I've seen a similar version of that at Mount Vernon, in the United states. The meat would go on the center part of the skewer. The forks that are offset, were used to keep the meat from rotating. As the rotisserie with spin. So the chicken would go on the center with one of the outer Forks holding it in place. Also there should be one fork on each side of the piece of meat so that the load is balanced and the far end of the spit in the unit I saw, rested on a brass yolk, sort of a U-shaped bracket that was set into the brick. So I would assume in your situation just another stake in the ground with an eyelet, would accomplish the same job. But the meat goes in the center the forks go on the outside to keep the meat from turning. And yes it's supposed to turn very very slowly

Why don't you use drill or a drill press while making new handle? It's quite handy when you don have a lathe )

I had no idea what I was watching. In the U.S., "spit" means something totally different. Anyway, once I figured out it wasn't what I thought, I was pleasantly surprised, and the machine turned out to be very nice. Thanks for posting this video! : )
