  • This event was organized by the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (ISGRG) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the publication of "General Relativity" by Bob Wald.
We had a talk by David Garfinkle with the title and abstract:
    Bob Wald and "General Relativity"
This talk will begin with some anecdotes about how I first encountered Bob and his book. Then I will consider what is distinctive about the book, first using some quotes from the blurbs and the introduction, and then considering the notation, structure, and methods that the book uses.
Then we had a talk by Bob Wald with the title and abstract:
Questions and Answers about "General Relativity"
I will answer some of the questions I am most frequently asked about my "General Relativity" book: Why did I write the book? (This is a particularly good question, given that at the time there was already an excellent graduate text by Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler and an outstanding monograph on advanced topics by Hawking and Ellis.) How long did it take me to write it? What were my expectations of the role that the book would play and what surprised me the most about the reception of the book? Do I plan to write a second edition? (The answer to the last question is "no" but I'll say a few words of explanation as to why.)
The talks were followed by a Q&A session.
