- ESPN's Johnathan Givony projects 10 Europeans in the first round of 2024 NBA Draft. This is another proof of NBA being a fully global league. In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas takes a look at four of the most interesting European prospects in the next year's draft: Alex Sarr from France, Nikola Topic from Serbia, Matas Buzelis from Lithuania, and Zacharie Risacher from France.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The way Europeans developyoung athletes is just straight up better than Americans. The main difference is the heavy focus on being a team first player. This enables them to read the game better.
I made a video before about this and there are many layers to this. USA develops great individual players with insane level of skill to score, European lean on fundamental skills. It's hard to tell which one is better, but obviously if someone from Europe has the same amount of athleticism Americans have, then they have competitive advantage. Also, AAU basketball plays a huge role into the injuries of American NBA players early in their careers. They are simply playing too many games & reaching their physical peak way too early in their careers because of that. Very interesting topic to research
To me it looks like americans are training prospects so they can dominate as teenagers and their game have to change too much when they come into the nba
No brother you aint right,we here dont even call self Europeans,we all know who is who, that is first and second there is no 2 countries who do same with youth,my country Serbia do one way, rich countrys just buy good players and with some good Americans thay learn to play ball...Some countrys who Americans see as good in basketball like Espana is one if the worst for Euro baskett, thay take spots for clubs in Euroleague from ex Jugoslavia just to buy cheap or for free talents (Thay buy Luka Doncic when he was 12) and that "slave" trades i dont see in NBA and Salary cep in NBA is good thing...
They also focus on fundamentals a lot more then in the US
You got the physique preparation and gyms that we can only dream of and we have a team mentality and the fundamentals. Only some fakes and the average American player is out, look at Doncic
Be ready Nikola Topic is coming
He's playing on an insane levels to start the season. Even I, who had a lot of optimism about him getting drafted in the 1st round, did not expect this type of dominance
Both Topic and Risacher have fathers that where playing pro basketball in Europe in their prime.
I remember Topics father well from his playing days as a no nonsense 4 who played great D and was great three point and especially free throw shooter.
Topić improved a lot over one year period
Crazy steps progressing. Can't wait to see him in a higher level
@@AugustasSuliauskas It's possible he will play Euroleague in January
I would love to see him but I think it's better for his draft stock to remain in Mega. He would not play over Shabazz, Yago or Milos@@draganmarkovic491
Keep an eye out for jesse edwards, senior from West Virginia looking to be the first dutch nba player in over a decade. Severely underrated defensive and athletic center who is the best player on the dutch national team and held his own against nba centers in international play…. And the man is not even on most mock drafts.
Allright, I'll check up on him. Thanks for letting us know!
Is he related to you ? Brother ? Cousin ? Nephew ?
@@Desi365 nope
You described Zachary in a way that makes him sound exactly like another Nicola Batum! So if that's a accurate comparison, then it is the most poetic and perfect timing, with Nicola likely retiring within the next couple of years, and this kid coming in, as well as the fact that they're both Frenchmen. How wild and cool is that?
Bro Young Topic will be a captain of our country one day,i promise you. Dude is a monster.
That could very well be the case. Seeing what I'm seeing at 18 is so so promising
Not just Europe but international leagues groom talented players at a younger age, against tougher competition than AAU kids.
Either way, it's a good thing for NBA fans since more players will allow for greater parity. Talent still matters but with enough talent to go around, chemistry might factor into championships moreso than ever before.
Think of it this way....all the great international in the past decade.....Giannis, Embiid, Jokic, Luka, Wemby, SGA......that is starpower on par with the best of the 1960s NBA....Wilt, Russell, Oscar, West, etc. Then, you have smaller but still talented names like Wagner, Porzingis, Sengun, Markannen, etc who were like the other All-Stars of that era.
What am I trying to get at? Imagine that we drop the 1960s NBA on top of the 90s-2000s NBA?
That's a talent rich league. Might require a four team expansion just to deal with it through the 2020s and beyond.
Another great breakdown Augustus. Yeah Buzelis used to live here in the Chicagoland area, which has a huge Lithuanian community. Even have a Lithuanian basketball league out in Lemont at the church there I believe. A quick question for your opinion- The college I went to has the NCAA Player of the Year in Purdue's Zach Edey. He is not regarded as a huge NBA prospect because of his side and lack of movement, but he is a dominating player. He is from Canada so not an American. How do you think he would do in the Euroleague at the right team? Thanks
Great presentation, Augustas
Thanks a lot!
Imagine if Topic come to SAS and Wemby 🤯
The European Combo
Main question for him will be on defense can he be just OK on defense or will he die on screens?
@@Kenny-bj2zq what lvl defence. Do you think Dame lvl would be enough?
As it stands, highly plausible. sas will have a high draft pick and in desperate need of a true PG. A savyy one at that. Plus SA is known for their love of international players and not afraid to give the point to them (Parker, Mills)...would looove it!!
Hm and Parker/Topic comparison might not be that far away. Drive first, insane speed, high IQ players. The long shot being the weak spot. Of course, the game has changed and the importance of the 3 ball has risen exponentially, but SAS taking Topic could make sense. @@romainguibert2826
Little nitpick, but the team Zaccharie Risacher is playing for is pronounced "Boor" (the g is silent).
It matters because the way you said it sounds like "Bourges" which is the greatest women's basketball team in France, and is in a completely different city.
The best thing about Europe taking over the NBA is that in a few decades basketball will become one of the most popular sports worldwide. Right now it ain’t even close compared to football worldwide
I really hope so. But what makes you think basketball will grow its popularity exponentially worldwide?
Many European basketball players growing up playing football first before they
hit their growth spurt. Thats where you can see how European bigs have very good footwork. After they noticed their height caused a bit disadvantage in football unless if they play as a goalkeeper, central defender or true 9, they later choose to pursue basketball or volleyball.
For example if a kid start to play as a winger in football then suddenly he reached 6'8", it's such a waste to play in that position but he also will struggle to change his role because of the skillset he developed. That kid surely will make a great basketball big will excellent footwork.
Nah basketball will never overtake football, the gap is too big and football is just more accessible.
No, because football is more accessible
Unlikely. Euroleague has been around for a while and It's still nowhere near as popular as the Champions League in Europe or worldwide. European stars fleeing to the NBA will only diminish popularity. Since Euroleague has less talent but European fans won't watch NBA because of the timezones and the fact it's not accessible up close
Topic is totally better for Euroleague, or better to say for Red Star! :)
Not mentioning Alperen Sengun or Sabonis in this video is a crime.
We may add Adem Bona to this list who is a great defensive prospect
i love this content
Thank you!
Hope we start seeing a pipeline of All-NBA level talent emerging out of Africa and South America. Japan seems like it's gearing up for a sports renaissance in all aspects so hopefully they start producing more NBA talent as well.
What is this japanese sports renaissance occurring and how do you tell?
Once Africa gets at it thanks to better infrastructure and scouting effort, there will be enough talent flowing from all around the world to justify having an all star game format between USA and world, which will be absolutely amazing, like the ryder cup in a way
@@DrkstrXthey aren't lol. This guy watched to much anime
@@DrkstrX They've been performing well in international competitions. Their soccer team has beaten some heavy hitters recently (They're actually investing a lot into their soccer infrastructure specifically), they beat I think it was Germany during FIBA while having an impressive showing overall, won the WBC, and always perform well in Rugby.
Nothing too crazy I guess but notable for a country like Japan and bodes well going forward.
@@bamiyamoto8187ironic, casual
yes european are coming in great numbers but draft really depends on many factors to say euro will dominate nba for years...alex sarr could legitimately go n1 but isaiah but after that you have americans super talented cooper flagg and cameron boozer....so usa still around producing great players
Now why would Buzelis be considered a European prospect. He was born in the US and hasn’t played outside of it and plays in the G league. His parents a Lithuanian but I guarantee his ball isn’t.
his ball may be not lithuanian, but his balls are, if you know what I mean 😏✨
Topic speed is amazing!
Can't wait till Perkins, Steve A and Arenas go full "they are stealing our jobs" mode
I want that EU v USA game. Make it an all star event.
Should be EU VS the Americas since EU is a continent
@@PrinceZakariyya North America, I’ll concede that. South America is a different continent.
EU is a trade union, not a continent
@@jamesedwards1284 is both short hand for the 🇪🇺 AND for Europe.
@@jamesedwards1284there is literally the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) being a trade Union. The European Union (EU) is a supranational political and economic union
I hope to see Topić in Spurs, he seems like exactly the type of PG they would need and who would fit their philosophy the best
I got your monster jam right here.
Expect too more and more players from Africa, with the BAL and so on... Physical potential in Africa is huge, you see more and more African players in Euroleague, in big clubs or in the NBA. That's very cool, many countries now can produce good players, in Asia and South America too obviously
Serbia first 5 in Paris...NIKOLA topic, kalinic, jovic, jokic, milutinov 🤣
Well, you should know by now there is no first five in Serbian national team, but always first 12... But again, talking about possible squads, you would have Jokić + Micić together on floor, those two can play pick and roll together, with NIkola Jović and presumably Bjelica or Kalinić on wings (that can catch those insane passes and play cuts), with Bogdanović as captain and sharshooter, and of course, when you have Jokić on the floor, it is out of the mind to have there also Milutinov in the same time, who plays in the same space as Jokić (it is basically cheat code to switch from Nikola to Milutinov and back without changing anything in the game structure). Milutinov + secondary playmaker would be second unit (in practice, you will have as so called "bench" people that won world cup silver :), and beside usual suspects like Nedović, Avramović etc, there will be for sure spot for Nikola Topić. It could easilly happened that duo Milutinov + Topić overscore Jokić + Micić duo by far. But wait and see who will play at all next year, and most important, who will be coach, because this is what Pešić would probably do, and someone else, like mad magician Željko Obradović, might do totally diferent structure that would surprise everyone, including himself...
"The 5 NIKs!"
Great content as always, but I can't help but giggle on 1:46. Playing basketball with face masks. 😅😅😅
Well, those were very different times we lived in haha but yes, especially with the way masks are actually on their necks almost
I think that Topic would benefit greatly from 1 good EL season before he goes.
The Knicks are looking for the next Frederic Weis or Frank Ntilikina.
They do have a certain taste for lengthy Frenchman, that's definitely true haha
Risacher the new Nic Batum
same with most countries
It's very easy, if you play more than you train you can't develop yourself properly.
I don't play in a good level, but we train 3 days a week and we have a match in the weekend. I am 17 and im from Spain.
With all the tournaments players my age have to play in USA they can't learn the concepts that we Europeans know bc all the colective training we do, they just know how to play individualy.
if nicola gets 14 - 19 minutes in a euroleague team , for one season . we will talk about the best new quard for the decade
Ajinca and Almansa?
And where is the explication of Izan almansa?
i hope the spurs get nikola topic for me is the best PG in this draft him and wemby oh man i can't imagine
Whath about Andrej Stojakovic?
He’s started well at NCAA
A lot of guys not mentioned here, tried to concentrate on the highest-ranked ones and the most interesting ones. Could be some sleeper picks as your mentioned Stojakovic too
Ko ga jebe
he is not that good. McDonald's All american because of hus father and even small hype he gets is overhype. You'll see
topic is gonna be the best playernof this draft
I like that Europe producing more talent, but they are not getting enough time in Europe. I think they need at least a pro year here. If not then I am not sure if they will have anything "European" to their game.
Johann Grünloh of Rasta Vechta will become a really good NBA player.
Not Wemby. Now it is Alperen Sengun time. Wemby needs time.
France how tf many basketball players u will have…😂😥
They could easily have 3 teams at the World Cup
@@AugustasSuliauskas And all 3 of those could easily crash and burn because of some stupid internal stuff between players and/or staff...
That's the son of Stephane?
Yes it is 👍
Yes
Yes!
Its only a matter of time until the NBA switches over to the metric system 😂
As a Spurs fan, I think it’s obvious now that we will draft Nikola. Go Spurs Go!!!
Watch how big the Australian league NBL becomes over the next 5 years in funneling talent to the NBA for international players not just Australians.
The league was dying and the NBL in conjunction with the NBA remodeled it as an NBA pathway.
Next Stars - La Melo Ball - 3, Josh Giddey - 6, Alex Sarr ?1. Also Alex Toohey, Bobi Klintman, & Mantas Rubstavicius can be high picks in the next draft.
how about talking about the world champions Izan Almansa or Aday Mara? Spain has a great generation of players 🇪🇸
Yup, in 20 years, the NBA will be like 1/3 white. Mostly European, but you will have a few American talents like Cooper Flags and Gradey Dicks in there.
Topic has Manu type game
or Parker?
pistons should get topic and wizards should get sarr
i agree Europeans are good players or at best but right now you have to be tough to stick in d NBA just look at those top europeans who struggles to stick at making another contract right after rookie years just ak Petrusev
Basket IQ is so much different and higher in Europe than in the US... Sorry guys.
The black satanic eyes of Silverstein lmao
All of the best young players are foreigners now. The days of US elite recruits dominating year after year is over
Ivwould not be surprised ifvthe dpurs drafts topic or risachet .....remember what i am saying
As a NBL fan, I don't think Sarr is THAT good, but hey it might be because the Wildcats are currently in such terrible shape.
He is a little bit passive and need a very good PG. Has all tools to succeed
French basketball is overhyped because of Wemby´s popularity right now. I mean, you take a step back from the Euroleague because you ain´t really ready for it, just to make you look better for the scouts? How about you fight for minutes in Euroleauge
I really wish we keep our talents in europe and watch them in euroleague
The EuroLeague isn’t the most financially lucrative league for young players to play. As a top NBA draft pick, you can get paid the same amount as the highest paid EuroLeague players on your rookie deal entering the NBA
VIVE LA FRANCE !!!
Europeans allow themselves to be coached. American AAU coaches are afraid that top players will bolt to another team, so they let them play street ball and do whatever they want, which generally isn’t fundamentals.
Best players come ftom EU
It will be better they all play in EUROLEGUE
To overcome NBA circus
this si going to be bust draft class
Oh god, not the europeans (I am one)
lets goooooo
Not all Europe only France
Delusional
No defense.all teams over 100 scores .that’s why no taste to watch.boring.just shooting
We’re gonna need another MJ to come around to shift the game of basketball from tall people game to normal guards
Anthony Edwards is on that mission right now haha
@@AugustasSuliauskashe is good but not generational so I doubt it but I can be wrong. He is the best American prospect of this generation for usa.

How do you like THAT "diversity," NBA media? COPE.
No one talks about europan basketball was owned by american players 20 years alredy.
🤣 nah
Lol you see Europeans in the NBA all the time 😂
It's still disappointing that the *top young European basketball players would to the NBA* for more competition and salaries and we cannot stop them from leaving
EuroLeague can't simply do that: not enough money, not enough spotlight. The difference is just too big to pass up on the opportunity and it's only growing
@@AugustasSuliauskasAgreed. Wanting the best basketball prospects to stay in Europe is like wanting the best football players in the world to start off in the American MLS. That’s unrealistic and not going to happen
So this is why the next draft is expected to be the weakest in years.
Real men come from European countries.
Ok I understand the point but Matas Buzelis is American…..
yeah let's go France (yeah I'm French)
Buzelis doesn't look good to be honest looks like a bust
Can't wait to see him in the G League to really see how he fares against grown men for a longer periods of playing, not just 1 or 2 games
European player > american player
Facts are terrible
They’re good overseas. That’s fine. The athleticism and game styles are different in the NBA. the best players will always be American grown.
Only positions that seems to translate from overseas to nba are playmaking Gaurds and stretch bigs.
The majority become role players. Then there’s a bunch of excuses from Overseas people lol.. let’s be honest here.
Giannis and wembly isnt European lol
