The Stille being so OP for “no reason” could be taken as a subtle hint that there is something extremely dangerous in the local environment that the Stille needs to defend itself against, namely those man-eating bird monsters.
Honestly didn't think of this for some reason. I don't know how much thought went into the ecology of the world, but there is evolution if demons evolved from the monster version of anglerfish. Stilles wouldn't have evolved with a magic nitro boost unless there was something fast enough to warrant it.

Fern is describe as almost invisible in episode 1 by Frieren, she also pass under the detection of Linie when it was established that she is extremly good at detecting mana. So yeah it is pretty much implied that she did captured the bird.
It's also shown during her younger years of training, birds would land on top of her during meditation.
@@kingofsapi And Frieren says she releases a bit of her mana when she moves. I think she's comparing herself with current Fern who can move totally suppressing her mana even flying/moving.

@@voibitbay you need to actively use mana detection to sense someone who's trying to hide so episode 3 isn't a good example, Frieren was just leisurely walking around town looking for a birthday gift. Also, this will become more clear later on as we face other mages and demons, but being able to hide your presence is common for highly skilled magic users
I love how little Fern and Frieren talk during fights, they never try to start the convo. Just letting the other person go on and on meanwhile just being totally calm.
Same here. I love how smart Frieren and Fern fights. They read and evaluate their opponents while revealing nothing or outright misdirection for their enemies.
Both were trained to fight demons, whose main weapon is talking. Not letting what their opponents say affect them is a very important part of that training, as we saw in previous episodes.

If there’s anyone in this exam who can suppress their mana to the point where they can sneak a stille while it’s asleep, it’s Fern. Nobody’s better at mana suppression than her.
That's a lie. She's definitely good at it, but not THE best at it. In chapter 99 of the manga Solitar mentions how Fern is still too immature in her mana concealing, she's still not on the level of concealment that Frieren is. Solitar mentions how Fern wouldn't even be able to deceive any great demons yet. But Frieren could deceive anyone, including Solitar if she didn't have previous knowledge

Fern: I am taught to beat you with classic baseball bat whacking. Like how granny whacks deliquent's butt.
My view on Deken. He is an imperial court mage, which means he is more of a politician than a mage. That is why he believes that winning people's heart is more important than being strong in magic. Also, he views the world through the eyes of a politician, not a mage. This influences how he sees the mage association's principals as old fashioned, since his priority is not fighting demons, but fighting nobles and winning political power.
I hadn't put this together myself but this is why his little speech revolted me so much. Nothing that I hate more than many blood sucking parasites known as politicians.

Also he's an old man in _two_ professions (magic and politics) where people seem to tend to die young. Clearly not someone you want to bet your life against.
Ubel doesn’t have the mental blocks other mages do so she can fight with just about anyone
yeah but mana still very important. if its all about imagination. then people or demon who cant read frieren mana will think frieren weak and one shot her like ubel did to the 1st class mage. Later on the manga there are someone who try hypnotize frieren but fail and she said "this only didnt work if there a big mana gap" while thinking frieren not suppresed her mana. so this mean the mana gap is blocking the spell no matter how strong your imagination is. I hate how many manga reader think imagination can beat everything in this show. Not to mention, the first class mage is confident that he will not die too. so if 2 people have the same confident and imagination what happen? it back to skill and mana. The imagination thing only work if the mana gap is not too big.

And omg that mana suppress scene with the monsters coming next to Frieren, one of my favs lol. The Stille on her shoulder was so cute.
I personally feel like because frieren learned from flamme, she somewhat teaches stronger than usual spells to fern? Or maybe it’s just that frieren is an elf and since she’s seen what the flaws and strengths of humanity and monsters were through her life, she managed to come up with spells powerful enough to deal with any situation in the era she’s in
Fern’s group getting the Stille so early I think was partly down to luck. A Stille just happened to land relatively near them, and Fern was able to sneak up on it because she’s good at hiding her mana, and use the same spell Frieren used to catch it, since Frieren probably taught it to her at some point.
The reason why Fern got the bird pretty easily its because She can Suppress her mana very very well, to the point Freiren have troubles when it comes to detecting her, she even described Fern "almost Invisible".
Not only trouble, if Fern fully hides her mana, is impossible even for Frieren to find her. In 3rd episode she followed her through town without Frieren noticing her.

@@DeadSmiled that's not a good example lol you need to actively use mana detection to locate people. frieren was just walking around town looking for a birthday gift, she was not using mana detection so she wouldn't be able to sense fern regardless.

@@DeadSmiled a lot of mages can become basically "invisible" when fully hiding their mana. fern is good at it, but it was never said she's better at concealing than frieren who's been doing this for over a thousand years. Talking about the manga, there's a fight in chapter 75 where a demon could easily detect fern despite the fact she was concealing her mana.

Yea these are the best mages in the country I'm sure they can tell when people are suppressing their mana especially when they got jumped. These aren't demons who wont even think about anybody suppressing mana

It is also confirmed that altough frern is able to sense when anyone else is surpressing their mana (considering she could sense it from the greatest mage we know of) others on the level above fern (the great sages and etc) can sense her instability as shown in the later chapters when a demon could sense her surpressed mana but couldn't sense frierens

It’s the same principle that Frieren mentioned the previous episode: Erde is a better mage(more mana, better technique, etc…) but Wirbel is a better combatant, securing a win even against opponents who are “stronger”(also, like she said, his favorite spell is a cheat)
She has higher stats, but he is better at fighting. If she just fought more and maybe changed her strategies, she could surpass him
It looks to me that Fern (and group) caught their Stille because they somehow managed to corner it into a cave? I noticed when the mighty speed bird goes super sonic or close to that speed, it goes straight. What if you lower it's ability to go higher into the sky and prevent it from leaving the forest? So, if they did do this accurately, prevent the Stille from going in a straight line (make it zig zag all the time) and keep it low to the ground (where there's trees and whatever else) possibly corner it into a cave, would that work?
What would be going through my head if I was in Fern’s shoes:
Oh that guy fought against the remnants of the demons? Neat. I beat Aura’s second in command and my master made Aura alt+f4 herself, but good on him for helping out.
She is smart and would not underestimate anyone. Her own master lost to 6 humans who were all weaker than her in term of mana. That alone shows nobody is absolute in this show.

Fern's could conceal her mana so good that even Frieren and Heiter couldn't find her. It's probably not a big deal to hide herself before Stille.
Frieren thought it was difficult to find her but she did find her. Yes Fern is good at it, but a lot of mages are capable of becoming basically invisible when hiding their mana
@@lisakulig3140 She was, like, _four or five years old,_ though, and almost completely untrained. She's a natural prodigy. And she's been constantly training under Flamme's best disciple since then...
@@mbpoblet she was 9 years old when frieren first met her, and I'm pretty sure heiter was training her some of the most basic stuff (such as trying to conceal your mana). yes fern is a prodigy but the reason why she was able to capture a stile was because of luck, episode 20 told us this. her group found a nest of birds and she had the spell to capture a bird that frieren had taught her. the reason why frieren had to make such an elaborate plan was because they couldn't find any stile anymore (the ones they found before were scared away because of kanne and lawine messing up).

12:08 Once Freiren uses magic everyone will sense her. It is like firing a gun in a forest.
That also gives a hint how Fern caught the bird. Earlier Kanne said the bird is sensitive to mana and stays away if it detects mana. Then we saw the proctor sitting at his tent with the bird around him, which means he was also supressing his mana to the point he did not scare away the bird. Which I believe was how Fern was able to catch the bird. As we know Fern is better at suppressing her mana than Freiren.
Facts
Fern is not better than frieren at suppressing mana, frieren suppressing her man is equivalent to an experienced mage due to her having a ridiculous amount. Fern can get her mana to get supressed completely easier its just that frieren has to put more effort to do so
I don't know where people are getting the idea that fern is better at suppresing her mana than frieren lol. Frieren only said Fern is better at casting spells faster. Frieren has spent over 1000 years supressing her mana, I don't think Fern being better than her is what the story is trying to tell us. Catching the bird has a lot to do with luck as well, since you can't use mana detection to see where they are, you need them to show up in the location you are in. Frieren group was out of luck in this regard and the ones that did show up in front of them, lawine and kanne kept messing it up and scaring it away.

@@javahikage when was that chapter? I don't remember that. when was it said in the manga that fern has better control and understanding of mana than frieren ? In fact, in chapter 73 we see Frieren showing to be better at mana detection than fern, when she pointed with her finger for fern to block an attack that she wasn't able to see it coming. Fern was said to cast spells faster than frieren, I don't remember anything else. Also we learn that frieren has a flaw in her defense, because when she uses a barrier for defensive magic her mana detection stops for a split moment, that's all.

Denken is wise but the test conductors have the more right approach, their approach raises the base level of your average mage up, or forces that to be the case. Where as Denkens way would easily allow and even promote lazy mages, it'd become a worthless title under him.
I read this arc, but cant remember how Fern's team caught the stille (dont remind if its explained later), but as I understand it, the stille is actually ludicrously challenging for a mage, specifically, to catch. A non-mage would struggle much less.
lol where did you get that idea. a non-mage would have even more trouble because they wouldn't be able to use spells such as the one frieren used to catch the bird. non-mages also have mana, every living being has mana so all the troubles the mages went through in catching the bird would also be there for non-mages, but unlike mages they wouldn't be able to use spells so this actually would make it harder for them. Stark, for instance, would never be able to catch one.

It's not that big. Mana is proportional to the amount of years you've spent training. So fern's mana isn't actually impressive, but she makes up for it by being super fast and super skilled

😅After 18-ish episodes, Lee still mispronounced Frieren just say Free then Ren in one word basically 2 syllable name, I mean come on unless he's doing it on purpose, but I've heard other reactors mispronounce her name just as bad😂

Something I noticed... Fern's attacks in this episode are REALLY slow compared to her fight with the demon.
With the demon, she was out for blood, 100%.
With this human, where the test isn't even about killing each other, she's probably not trying to kill.
These mages can learn their place, back off, and either find their own bird or fail the test and try again in a few years.
Killing is a bit extreme. And that kind of thinking, something Frieren would probably also think (likely even to the point of failing herself if needed, what's another 3 years to test again), a thinking process that Fern is likely going to have learned as well.
Considering we have the characters with itchier trigger fingers that will "kill when they get in my way" and "kill when they threaten me", I'm betting the next episode will be all these perspectives of killing.
She was raised by a priest and have lost everyone she loved, it's safe to say she understand the value of human lives while showing extreme prejudice against demons, since that is what Frieren probably taught her.

However, she does have substantial motivation to refrain from killing non-teammates, as well, in this particular setting... If you know you know
Remember when Frieren and Fern first met, Fern was already suppressing her mana to the point of being invisible and Frieren mentioned that about Fern's control. Fern doesn't have as much mana as Frieren, but she has far greater control of her mana than Frieren has. Frieren can't keep her mana fully suppressed while moving, but Fern might be capable of that...not to say that Fern is actually more skilled in that regard than Frieren, but maybe Frieren has so much mana that it is impossible for her to fully suppress 100% of it even after her many millennia of suppressing, because it has grown so much.
Fern does NOT have a better mana control than Frieren, you just made that up. It's actually stated the opposite by Solitar in chapter 99. Fern is good at concealing her mana but she's not on Frieren's level yet. Solitar mentions Fern wouldn't even be able to fool any great demons yet, but Frieren would be able to fool even Solitar herself if she didn't have previous knowledge about her.
