I'm sorry, but you could not cast a comic-book villain any better than Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin. He portrays that split personality so damn well, the way he switches seamlessly from the meek-mannered Norman Osborn to the sadistic and cruel Green Goblin.

So, in 2002, who did it better, Willem Defoe or Andy Serkis? Serkis did a great job with Sméagol and Gollum but I think Defoe just did it a little bit better.

A lot of people complain about the Goblin Suit looking too "Power Ranger-like", and I honestly never understood it.
The other alternative was to make a latex Goblin Mask, and it would have aged like Milk 💀
The Tactical feel of the suit, and the Menacing expression of the Mask were masterstrokes imo.

Green Goblin is one of the few villains who can endure Spiderman's power. Normally Spiderman has to holdback because he could punch a hole through a person with ease. But Green Goblin is one who can tank it and dish it out.

He was running around in his Spider-Man boxers making popcorn and made me use his big Spider-Man blanket and we all piled onto the couch. From then on I was hooked. This movie is so important to Spider-man fans. No one thought a Spider-man movie would ever get made as there were confusing legal issues surrounding the ownership of the rights to the movie IP. Years of legal disputes had ground to a halt and any hope for a movie was dashed. Rumors of a Spider-man movie had been swirling since the mid 1980's. Toby Maguire plays a perfect Peter Parker and for me that's the reason he's the best Spiderman to date. Peter is a character who always gets knocked down, always draws the short straw but continues to do the right thing no matter what. He's the kind of superhero that makes people aspire to be better in their actual lives and Toby Maguire nails that aspect of the character in a way that the other actors just haven't been able to.

Tobey McGuire comes closet to the comic book character. As an old woman who collected Spiderman comics with my first allowance money (and actually owned the first comic featuring him), he's my favorite. Going ahead, please watch the movies featuring this character in this order to make sense of the Spiderman movies: (1) complete Tobey McGuire's trilogy with Spider-Man 2 & 3, (2) Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spiderman 1 & 2, (3) Captain America: Civil War that introduced Tom Holland as Spidey, (4) then complete the Holland trilogy (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: End Game, Spider-Man: Far From Home, followed by Dr. Strange in order to make sense of the latest one -- Spider-Man: No Way Home). Of course, there are other Marvel movies you could watch in between but this is the order for all the Spidey stories.

From my understanding and from what my brother has explained to me (LOL), both Marvel and DC comic books over the many many decades every now and then revamps their most famous comic book superhero origin stories. In the example of Spider‐Man, there is the "Spider-Man" comic books series that first was created in the early 1960s but decades later a new incarnation of Spiderman comic book series emerged from Marvel called "The Amazing Spider-Man" with a slightly different and more detailed origin story. Then even more years later, Marvel created "Ultimate Spider-Man" comic books. This time the main characters is not Peter Parker (though he does exist in this universe) but a black Hispanics-American teenager named Miles Morales.
Prior to the movies I grew up watching the cartoon version of Spider-Man on TV back in the late 1960s and very early 1970s even though there has been animated Spider-Man TV shows throughout every decade to this day. There was a live action TV show as well at one point in the late 70s.
I won't go into the disastrous details of... wait for it... "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" the Broadway musical. Yes. True story. There was a Spider-Man musical on Broadway. Historically disastrous. No exaggeration.

Hi guys, I've just finished watching your reaction to this, 11 months after you posted it. And I was wondering when you were going to continue with all the Spiderman movies and the rest of the MCU?
Until then, I guess I'll have to continue watching the rest of your reactions on here.
But I would like to say how much I enjoy watching your reactions.
And going from watching the LOTR reactions which brought me here to some of the newer reactions, and seeing how much Lewis has grown is mind-blowing! Lol. So I it must be even more so for you! But he's a credit to you.

My fav Spiderman is Toby Mcguire, Tom Holland is a close 2nd and Andrew a close third, thats how good all 3 portrayals are.
My fave Spiderman movies in order are: in first place, this one (Mcguire 2002) & Holland's Homecoming....2nd fav is the remaining 2 Mcguire movies (yes including the 3rd), Holland's No Way Home & Garfield's TASM 1 (altho sometimes i have No Way Home in the first place spot with the other 2), then close 3rd, Holland's Far from Home and Garfield's TASM2......
Having said that, i love all 3 portrayals, theyr different, unique...and each one brings something special to the table......BUT, McGuire's Spiderman will always be my fav, maybe cuz i have fond memories of watching this in the theatre when it came out, plus it has heart❤️, makes you feel fuzzy n warm inside✨️. Thats my best description of it.

Back in the day Marvel Comics, the people who make the comics, was on the verge of bankruptcy so they sold the rights to make movies with their characters to various movie studios. They sold the rights to Spiderman to Sony
Spiderman 1 - 3 star Tobie Maguire directed by Sam Rami
Amazing Spider-man 1 and 2 star Andrew Garfield
The Maguire Trilogy are their own story arc, The Garfield movies are a reboot of the franchise use other characters from the comics. So they basically started over.
Some of the other characters Marvel sold the movie rights were The Hulk (2 movies), The Fantastic 4 (4 not fantastic movies), Blade (3 movies) and X-men ( a bunch of movies and spin off movies, about 9 or 10)
Famous quotes from the Spiderman comics
"With Great Power comes Great Responsibility" Uncle Ben
"Face it Tiger, You Just hit the Jackpot" Mary Jane (on meeting Peter for the first time for a blind date)

Basically, the simple version of the story is that when Marvel was desperate for money in the 90s, they sold the film rights to a bunch of their popular characters to 20th Century Fox, Universal and Sony, which is where Spider-Man went to. There may have been more, but I'm not sure.
They made 3 Tobey Maguire movies, then rebooted in 2012 with Andrew Garfield. He only had 1 sequel before Sony and Marvel made a deal in 2015 to bring a new version of Spider-Man into the MCU, for which they cast Tom Holland, who's since had 3 solo movies. The deal made it so that Sony could make the Spider-Man movies with existing MCU characters (whom they wouldn't have been allowed to have beforehand) and Marvel could include Spider-Man in other projects if they wished.
Sony have also been making other Spider-Man adjacent movies since this deal. The animated Spiderverse movies (Into the Spiderverse and the new sequel Across the Spiderverse) which you should definitely watch when you can, and Spider-Man villain movies, which so far includes Venom (and it's sequel) and Morbius, with more planned (these don't include Spider-Man).
If you decide to watch these, (which I recommend you do), I'd consider their release dates with the MCU once you've caught up with the main Spider-Man ones. They're not part of the MCU, just like the Maguire/Garfield movies, but sticking with release date order would just be nice.

    • @fleason771

Brilliantly explained but something to note that some don't realise is that Sony take 100% of the box office money from each & every Spider-Man film including all of the MCU Tom Holland solo Spider-Man movies. This is one of the fundamental reasons why Sony will NEVER let go of Spider-Man 💰 which I kinda respect because they took a chance on him first. Disney/Marvel Studios make money via merchandise for MCU Spider-Man films & can use him in other MCU films but he's kinda loaned by Sony & nothing can happen with the character in film without Sony's approval

I love all the live action Spider-Man films but the Raimi trilogy is special, call it nostalgia or whatever you want but I still think that these movies hold up as the best comic book to live action films I’ve ever seen. Saw the first one as a kid and it just instilled this very deep love of not only Spider-Man but superhero’s in general. Years later I remember going to see Thor for the first time with my dad and it kicked off my love for Marvel ( which I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t remembered how much I enjoyed Spider-Man) and despite its recent flops I’m still very much a dedicated fan today.
Willem DeFoe will always go down in history as one of the most talented actors for his brilliant Green Goblin. He made one of the cheesiest comic book villains one of the most iconic ones in film. His performance in the mirror scene, and in general gives me chills every time- especially the laugh. There’s a lot of fans over the years that jokingly ( and half serious if I’m being honest) as the Joker because of it. 😂
This movie and the other two are definitely cheese-fests compared to the MCU and the Amazing Spider-Man films but that’s part of the charm of course. The second one is my favorite and the majority favorite because of the appearance of another classic villain that I love. He will never be as good as Green Goblin but the pure chemistry of the actors is what makes him pretty high up there on greatest movie villains of all time.

Yes and no. It’s the same character but this is the first movie of the first series. They just call it Spider-Man. The other movies with Garfield is a reboot of the franchise but they also renamed it The Amazing Spider-Man . Which both titles refer to the comic books. There was the Spider-Man line and there was the Amazing Spider-Man line. But these were not deferent characters in the books it was just that they had several lines of Spider-Man comics with different titles but same character. For the movies though they chose to reboot the franchise and doing so they retitle it Amazing Spider-Man to differentiate from the other movies that was just Spider-Man.
