Took me a while to work through all this, but definitely made the drums sounds better. Thanks!

Love this, great job presenting this. Going to try some of these techniques

Great video! What amazes me is even though you added lots of plugins (and punch and clarity) the master fader level hardly goes up.. is that because of the heavy eq cleanup?

Yeah, great observation. Some is due to pulling out more frequencies than boosting. Also making sure the compression isn’t boosting the level helps too, making sure the make-up gain is set right. I also try to keep my subgroups (drum dry, parallel, and reverb) from building up too much.

@@woodyardmusic would love to see you do a whole (band) mix in this manner, possibly even master it..?

For sure! I’ve been wanting to do that but it’s going to take a bit because that’s a large amount of content, definitely on the horizon though.

I was wondering why you added a gain plug in on all the channels? did you go through and set all these first?

    • @woodyardmusic

I use it to correct gain staging sometimes (make sure all the tracks are hitting around -12db) but I mostly use it for the phase flip button

are the gate settings for all of the drums ?

    • @woodyardmusic

I use gates on the close mics only, in other words, not on any room mics, cymbal mics or overheads. Generally the gate settings are similar but you may need to adjust the threshold and release for each drum to make sure to get the response you want from the gate. Hope this helps.
