Coated nitrogen-based fertilizers
#Sulfur-coated urea (SCU) was one of the first CRFs. It was manufactured by the Tennessee Valley Authority [13,14]. SCU was prepared by coating preheated urea granules with elemental sulfur called molten sulfur. Sulfur is a low-cost plant macronutrient and is suitable for fertilizer coating because of its ability to melt at about 156°C. Jarrell et al. [15] describe that a typical SCU granule was made up of three types of coatings. The basic coating was enabled by spraying with molten sulfur over urea. Subsequently, a wax sealant is also sprayed to seal crack in the coating. The wax sealant acts as a perfect protective layer and minimizes microbial degradation [16-18]. Finally, a third layer (usually attapulgite) is added, which functions as a conditioner. The release of N from SCU is controlled by the thickness and coating quality [7]. SCU coated with perfect and thick coating is referred as “locked-off” [19] and damaged coating is denoted as “failure release” [20]. A batch of SCU granules may contain more than 33% damaged granules and rest “perfectly coated” granules [21,22]. Hence, 33% or more of the SCU content may be immediately discharged or burst after contact with water and remaining may be released long after (the “lock off” effect) if it is needed by the plant
