  • How to make a combination Dust and Spark collection system for a 2x72 Belt Grinder.
    Check out this prototype combination dust and spark collection system designed for knife makers. This design allows users to interchange additional tooling arms like a 90 degree table or Tilt Table bevel grinding jig. With the blast gate open hot sparks drop straight down into a five gallon bucket of water. With the 2 inch aluminum blast gate closed and the wet dry vac on dust from wood, micarta and fiberglass are sucked through flexible tubing.

    Exactly what I was looking for, actually the blast door part is the ingenious part. Thanks a lot

    I’ve watched so many of your videos. Thank you so much for all you do!

    The only addition I would suggest is some sort of spark arrest in the hose going to the vacuum for during the handle shaping.

      Very good Idea. A few hot sparks do end up in the flexible tube. I should be able to eliminate that when I make it out of sheet metal just with location but another blast gate would be perfect

    You should add the ducting gate to both sides. A LOT of sparks were going down the vacuum side and not into the water bath

    Impressive! I like the way you did that. I have the dust collection for wood but have always taken it off and put the bucket of water back in place for metals. I'll be looking for that aluminum blast gate to copy this for sure. Thanks!

      Thanks Jim, give me a couple wks and I should have sheet metal version

    Another good vid dan. Looking forward to seeing the final product. My only advice would be to put another blast door on the wood intake. Sparks can still go down there and can smolder and last a long time unnoticed, and when you start up the vacuum it will get a supercharged blast of air creating a bomb.

    How has this held up over the last 3 years? Any updates or improvements you would suggest for others?

    I like this set up. I have the same grinder and looking for a setup for collection and this is going to work perfect.

    Looks good.. if you haven't already made it i would only recommend a cyclone before going into your shop vac.. i made a cheap one from two 5 gallon homer buckets from home depot, works great. A guy on CZcams has a tutorial.

      Thanks Chris, I was thinking about making one. It does not create extra suction just collects all the dust into bucket rather than dry vac correct??

      @@DIYeasycrafts czcams.com/video/BeU4nqSJtBY/video.html this is the one i made... well a follow up video. You can find the original under his playlist. I put two home depot buckets together and put the top of my shopvac on them instead of the actual wheeled bottom and then used the wheeled bottom to hold the collector homer 5 gallon bucket which overcomes the tipping he talks about and allows me to wheel it around. Idk if it would work that way for everyone because i don't know if all shopvacs automatically fit a 5 gallon bucket or not, but if not you can use his ideas to prevent tipping and collapse. It works amazing. You could make a whole shop dust collection with it

      @@DIYeasycrafts yeah it just collects the dust protecting the shopvac and making it quicker and easier to change in my opinion

      There is one commercially available called a “dust deputy”. It works great, but ruins the diy spirit

    • @bumstudios8817
      @bumstudios8817 Před 4 lety

      @@rjverackajr There are several but a little pricey imho and still kinda diy because you usually need to buy a bucket still and sometimes hoses.

    May i please ask for a link to the 4in to 2in coupler? I can't tell if it's OD or ID. Also, how did you connect the Protec hood to the 4in PCV? looks like you have tap over it or something. Thanks in advance!

    How do you handle sparks while shaping handle scales while on a knife?

    • @DIYeasycrafts
      @DIYeasycrafts  Před 3 lety

      You have to be really careful. If im going to create any sparks at all I pour some water into system first and after. I also make sure to check wet dry vac before I leave the Garage. Even a small spark with air suction from the wet dry vac could start a fire.
