James is spot on the 45th President, who is a national disgrace and embarrassment that should be mocked on a national and international stage.

I agree with James that Trump supporters have complicated reasons for not letting go. Although I think some of the reasons weigh more than others.
Some of the key reasons include 1) elevating Christian belief over any other, 2) Maintaining white majority and superiority, 3) anarchy (keeping rifles, monster trucks and the right to abuse minority groups), & 4) white right regarding all level of existence (including denying any history that shed negative light on white Americans)
I grew up in the UK (60 odd years ago)and my mate I went to school with now lives in Texas. He thinks the sun shines out of trumps ample posteria. My mate is inteligent (top of the class in GCSE's) but he has a complete blind spot when it comes to Trump. In on line discutions where I piont out gently the reality of things, his answer I think answer's your question as to why they are so convinced. He lives in Texas married to a Texan and his answer is "I don't like to over think things". In other words it is to difficult to challange a view that all around you have. The other thing is since 2011 Google has made sure we only read what we agree with.

Not every American is pro-gun. Many of us are fighting for stronger gun laws. The deliberate misinterpretation of the second amendment has infected a great deal of the country that is looking for reasons why they're not as happy as advertisers say they're supposed to be.

It’s simple really. If 85% of the US believe in the literal Adam and Eve and the bible is historical then it’s not a stretch to get people to believe anything else. That’s why the evangelicals support him in droves even though prior to 2015 trump never mentioned anything about Jesus but knew those people wouldn’t question him if he told them he was on their side. He’s as far away as any teachings Jesus was purported to have taught it’s nuts - belief has nothing really to do with intelligence as we see with religion.

How Trump knew is because Trump long ago learned that he asserts something that on the surface seems to address an issue, or be a confident decisive statement, and appeala to emotion, maintaining a 100% air of confidence, there are people who will go all in and get on board.
They will double down on that conviction when challenged with evidence against it, because they are emotionally invested in an idea. Evidence to the contrary will likely make them angry at the progenitor of it, not Trump.
It typically requires serious personal fall-out that is too obviously a consequence of Trump's direct behavior, for someone to engage critically in evaluating everything.
Not that I expect Trump is aware of the particular reasons he's managed to continually keep convincing people he knows what he's doing, despite a very public record of fail after fall being available.
Trump, Johnson, Putin etc appeal to people who
a) Have a world view that there is some way that the world _should_ just be; as in, should just fall into being that way by default.
b) Find sweeping generalizations 'feel like they're correct', so they must be correct, especially in regards to how they fit into the world view.
C) Have never critically evaluated their world view, thought about why they hold it, what it means that their ideas about how the world and everyone _should_ be are in conflict with how the world actually is.
Boris Johnson is a saint compared to this terrible human being.

James, the answer to your question is that his base of voters is extremely loyal as long as he pursues issues of white supremacy or arguments such as elevating the white man's social status or denying blacks equal rights but above all prioritizing the interest of the white race.
