- Essay Tips is a new series I'm going to be putting out every so often packed with academic essay writing tips and research advice. In this first episode, I look at how to start an essay with a hook. How can you grab your reader and make them pay attention to your essay?
As a current first year PhD Student, I've recently been writing my literature review and the first sentence really matters. As such, I've come up with a few essay tips and tricks to help me kicks start my essays with a bang.

I often start my essay with some questions about the given theme or topic that will leave the readers with "Oh yea I thought about that too".

All great tips. I work as a writing tutor at my college, and I see so many essays that start with just a vague statement about the topic "Blank is a very important issue in our society." Might have to use this video in some of my sessions to give students some options!
Interestingly, I think the intention behind that's great, they absolutely should be telling us that blank is important, just maybe finding a slightly more subtle/creative way of doing so!!
I can't believe that even though I love writing, I forgot hot to write a hook just because I haven't written an essay in only a year. Thank you for making me remember! This is gonna help me with my final on Philosophy!!
These are great tips. I appreciate the video and look forward to watching your other writing-oriented ones, (as well as the WTT ones). I also teach writing, and an additional tip I advise my students is to consider writing an introduction or hook only after they've written an initial draft and not before because then, they will already know where that hook is leading, which can inform the choice of the hook. I found as both an undergraduate and MA candidate that I often had a head full of information without knowing what I was trying to argue, until I opened myself to the idea that an initial draft can serve as an exploration to discover the argument, while subsequent revisions can serve to reshape the essay into that argument.

I Started my essay by telling the reader what it is about and i got a mark off because she said "its pretty obvious what its about, you don't have to tell the person"

Alright, so I've been holding off on doing my finals essay for like 5 weeks after its due date, but the majority of the class hasn't started either so we have until the last day. I'm beginning my essay right now and I'm here commenting this. I'll edit this when I get graded on it. Never!!! You just start with blank sentences, then, you start the tension and then at the end of the intro you write the thesis statement.
