The Hillsville Massacre of 1912.

  • The frontier culture meets civilization in rural Virginia. In 1912, a misplaced kiss set off a string of events that pitted a powerful frontier clan against their political rivals and concepts of modern justice. The events that followed, the Hillsville Massacre or the Courthouse Tragedy, shocked and captivated the nation.
The episode is intended for educational purposes. All events are portrayed in historical context. No graphic depictions of violence are depicted.
The History Guy uses media that are in the public domain. As photographs of actual events are sometimes not available, photographs of similar objects and events are used for illustration.

I was very surprised to see this story. I'm a native, not just of Carroll County, but Hillsville, and a distant decedent of the Allens. The Sydney Allen shootout is a story everyone hears at some point. Most of our county events are held on Main Street, in front of the courthouse where the holes are still visible. This was a fantastic summary, well made, and historically as accurate as possible. Tha k you for telling it!

My aunt, who was born in 1904, remembered when this happened and a man came rushing in to tell them that “The Allen’s had shot up the Carroll County courthouse!” I even got to read a contemporary news article about it, but you had more information. An era and paradigm shift in the publics frontier mentality in that place at that time. Looking back we are often highly sensitive to certain issues because of our political climate, but the people living then were more akin to war hardened soldiers who get in fist fights for the sheer joy of it. 2 fun facts: First off this is still a contentious subject in Carrol County and descendants of the Allen family will still argue about what happened. Secondly, the detective agency employed by the state of Virginia were from the Baldwin-Felts Detective agency, the same agency that eight years later was involved in the Matewan Massacre. This incident led to the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest labor uprising in the US.

Here is a suggestion for a future episode. Maurice Buckley volunteered to serve with the Australian Army in December 1914, and was posted to Egypt. In late 1915 he was sent home due to contracting a sexually transmitted disease. In March 1916, he absconded from the Army camp at Langwarrin in Victoria, and was declared a deserter.
Buckley visited his family, who suggested that he re-enlist under a different name. He signed up as Private Gerald Sexton - Sexton was his mother's maiden name, while Gerald was the name of his brother, who had died earlier in the war from meningitis.
He served with the 4th Division of the AIF on the Western Front, and in early September 1918 Sexton captured a German dugout and took 30 prisoners, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He is the only soldier to have been awarded the Victoria Cross under an assumed name.

Great video as usual, do one on Rick Rescorla, his history definitely needs to be remembered, he's on the cover of the book "We were Soldiers once and young", he died in the South Tower on 9/11.
