- At 4:10 am on Jan 14 1993, the ship started listing in hurricane-force winds, estimated at 180 km/h. It capsized at 5:12am. The waves were up to 6 metres high and ferries in the nearby port of Sassnitz had been cancelled. Prior to its sinking, Jan Heweliusz had been involved in 28 incidents, including collisions with fishing boats, listing, engine failure, and a fire in 1986. It had ballast problems and had also damaged its hull in Ystad during docking, but this was not reported to the port authorities and only makeshift repairs were made. It sailed two hours late, carrying 10 railway carriages from five European countries.
The Marine Chamber of Appeals in Gdynia blamed the accident on the poor technical condition of the ship, with the captain, who died in the accident, also being blamed for allowing the ship to sail in such an unseaworthy state.

My father was booked on this ferry but missed it with two hours, when he arrived in Port he got the news from the office that the ship called mayday. He and some other Swedish drivers were lucky
I was on Kopernik that night....the weather was really crazy.
I opened a door and looked out on the deck and the waves was higher than the ship.

to już 29 lat od tej tragedii a Ja dziś mając 38 lat pamiętam ten dzień jak dziś...mając wtedy 9 lat tego dnia zostałem w domu w łóżku ponieważ byłem przeziębiony...i oglądałem relacje w TVP i zobaczyłem widok statku a w zasadzie to statku dryfującego do góry nogami... jeżeli można tak to nazwać i nawet wtedy jako za dziecka wstrząsneło to mną w jakiś sposób..dodatkowo jeszcze relacja jak z Kopernika we workach znoszono zwłoki...ale najbardziej później już po tragedii utkwił mi w głowie obrazek wraków zatopionych ciężarówek...dlaczego to piszę ponieważ dzis jestem kierowcą ciężarówki i swego czasu dobre parę lat kursowałem jak nie z Sasnitz czy Świnoujścia,Rostocku czy Travemunde do Szwecji,Norwegii czy Danii i za każdym razem gdy wiało powyżej 7-8B modliłem się żeby nie było powtórki z Heweliusza...choć raz już przy 10B dzwoniłem w panice do żony... gdy zobaczyłem,że załoga sprawdzała szalupy i kapitan przez głosniki powiadamiał ze nie ma zbyt dobrych wieści i musimy dryfować bo porty z powodu silnego wiatru są zamknięte może w 1/1000 czułem to co czuli wtedy kierowcy gdy statek tonął...choć nie wyobrażam tego sobie...Wielka tragedia...Cześć ich pamięci!

Mam niemal identyczne wspomnienia. Miałam wtedy też 9 lat i pamiętam dryfujący do góry nogami prom. Bardzo mi ta katastrofa zapadła w pamięć. Dużo o niej czytałam, oglądałam. Wszystko mogło potoczyć się inaczej, ale mimo, że było wiadomo, że statek jest wadliwy, dalej wypuszczano go w morze i jeszcze w fatalnych warunkach pogodowych.
Trochę kiepskie porównanie z mojej strony, ale można wozić ze sobą sztormiak tzn skafander ratunkowy tzw pingwin wtedy człowiek mógłby być spokojniejszy, tego typu equipment zwiększa szanse na przeżycie min o 60%. Z tego co pamiętam większość osób opuściła statek pogoda była fatalna potęgowana sztormem i zimnem, w jednej z tratw wśród członków załogi którzy finalnie przeżyli znalazł się kierowca ciężarówki który dzielnie walczył będąc bez skafandra umarł z zimna... Marynarz Leszek Kochanowski przeżył cudem miał tak niską temp ciała podgrzano mu poprostu krew w szpitalu. Niestety min kilka osób zginęło przez nieudolną akcje Niemców którzy spuszczali pusty kosz z helikoptera, a stateczek Arkona spuszczał siatkę. Polakom nie pozwolono poderwać śmigłowca gdyż Heweliusz nie był na wodach naszej odpowiedzialności. Gdyby Polacy wystartowali maksymalnie szybko, statystyki były by napewno inne i nie spuszczano by pustego kosza na lince
Też miałem 9 lat. Był słoneczny, bardzo wietrzny poranek w Szczecinie. Cały ranek szykowałem się na bal karnawałowy w podstawówce. W szkole ciemno, nauczycielka zapłakana, dzieciaki cichutko czekające na rodziców. Po powrocie do domu w nieskończoność pokazywane w tv fale przelewające się przez czerwone dno promu. Wieczorem relacja, jak wynoszą czarne worki z Kopernika.
Witam panowie.Też pamiętam ten dzień i relacje z akcji ratunkowej.Rok potem powtórka z Ms Estonia.Cześć ich pamięci nie spoczywają w pokoju.

one can agree on that giving that lengthy difficult position is a nightmare in situations like this, just as it was for estonia. Shitty time that other could not track the ships good enough for the crew to spend precious minutes finding out where they are.

One detail I noticed is how MF Silesia operator refers to the Heweliusz operator as ,,pan", which is essentially ,,sir" in Polish.

Pamiętam ten cholerny bardzo wietrzny dzień w Szczecinie. Cały poranek szykowałem się na bal karnawałowy w szkole, wszedłem do klasy, a nauczycielka powiedziała, że wszystko odwołane. Potem cały dzień przed telewizorem z przebitkami wystającego z wody dna Heweliusza. Wieczorem relacja w TV, jak wynoszą po trapie zwłoki z pokładu Kopernika. Dla 7-latka, który nie do końca rozumiał pojęcie śmierci, to buło coś strasznego. Nigdy nie zapomnę tego dnia. Dziękuję za ten unikatowy materiał. Słychać, że nadawali z mostka Heweliusza, jeszcze gdy pokład uciekał już spod stóp.

Could someone explain how its possible that the ships there were not aware of their position? No map, no gps, no navigation officer on board? I tought that the ship officers on the bridge should be aware of their ship position always.
i wonder how not a single passenger survived... ok, if it capsized too fast but i wonder if the crew made an attempt to communicate with them at all, is there somewhere to read survivors testimonies, the exact sequence of events?

Pracuje jako kierowca , pływam do i że Szwecji od 2 do 4 razy w tygodniu. Zawsze pamiętam .
Dzisiaj 30. Wielu pamięta. Ja jestem ze Świnoujścia, miałem wtedy 13 lat, wiało tak, że dosłownie kołysał się nasz wieżowiec. Pamiętam, że bardzo mną wstrząsnęła ta katastrofa.

@@Oakleaf700 This ship was shitty as hell. Frankly not so different to Estonia.
At one point they had problem with steering and tried to use bow thrusters to keep course.
They tried to deploy rafts, but crew was not properly trained on using them, so it took far too much time.
They actually inflated rafts while still onboard instead of throwing them into the water to self-inflate.
Wind was pressing rafts against ship's superstructure on a tiny deck with lot of freeboard.
Considering circumstances it was a miracle that 9 people survived.

Only crew members survived. Two passengers froze to death in life boats. The crew members survived because of surviving suits.

Podobno na pokładzie był transport broni dlatego polskie służby opozniały akcje ratunkową.
uran był transportowany do Libi
Bzdura, opóźniono akcje gdyż prom znajdował się w niemieckiej strefie odpowiedzialności, polskie załogi śmigłowców były w gotowości po kilku minutach ale nie dostały zgody na start.
Żadnej broni nie znaleziono a wrak zaczął być przeszukiwany już w 24 godziny po zatonięciu, czy zawsze muszą pojawiać się niedorzeczne teorie spisowe ???

No tak średnio, to był początek roku, woda lodowata, do tego sztorm, wielkie fale, wczesna godzina, jeszcze ciemno, a najbliższe statki kilkanaście kilometrów od nich i zanim dopłynęli, to większość ofiar już nie żyła. Może gdyby wcześniej się zorientowali i przeprowadzili ewakuację do szalup, to byłoby więcej ocalonych, ale to tylko gdybanie.

If they were supposed to be able to communicate in English, their knowledge of it was quite shameful.
I wouldn't say so. It is communicative enough. Also, you have to remember, that this was just after 1989, the officers on such ships would be educated in communist Poland, and therefore learning Russian will be the priority to them.
