When NBA could not see the pure talent of one of the greatest PGs of all time. When he went to Olympiacos, it was late for any team, because he changed the whole European basketball and he was committed to his new team to the end.

Bad timing for spanoulis. His coach never trusted him, but its known that coach pop and tony parker wanted him at san antonio. I think it would be the ideal team and coach to prove how important player could be for every team. At least his return to europe, made him a european legend.

@@dimitrisgiannakopoulos1967 he would be all star in NBA.
But coach hadn't chosen him and also didn't believe in giving chances to Europeans in first six months.
One guy chose him another coached him. And sanoulis s wanted to play from first month. So they had war.
Then was given to Spurs that was good situation since Popovic was a quotable person to adjust European basketball and a 22 y old European player, but Spanoulis had since middle of first year told manager to and team to let him go because they had huge war and Spanoulis went very angry and made deal with Panathinaikos, since also he hadn't liked Houston at the time as a place.

Van Gundy didn't care for Spanoulis, and the rest is history. Spanoulis should have gotten 18-20 minutes off the bench that first year in Houston instead of 8. It was a time when European players were simply looked over. Vasilis was a big time player, and his results in Europe and in International play showed it. Shame on Van Gundy.

    • @timeflies313
      @timeflies313 Před 2 lety +2

Yeah but on the bright side, things like that are what paved the way for players like Giannis, Luka, and Jokic to shine in today’s era. NBA teams are now more patient with European prospects because some of them might be special and they don’t want incidents like what Spanoulis went through to happen again.
For people who are saying the NBA are still “against” international prospects, explain to me then why busts like Dragan Bender, Hezonja, etc. played for a couple of seasons in the league even though they were blatantly bad. It’s because teams are willing to give them a chance hoping they might improve. Meanwhile you have prospects like Avdija, Giddey, and Sengun who are shining even though they also don’t look that great based on eye test alone.

NBA short minded managers, back then, could not admit that an overseas player could reach high numbers. Many Europeans went for a season or two and then returned to the Euroleague. I was young back then, so I can't remember the reason. It could be the overall performance, but come on, give players some time to adjust.
Spanoulis evolved to be the best playmaker in the Euroleague. Not only did he drive to the basket anytime he wanted, but he also had a great percentage in 3s.
He retired on 2021, and was 1st in overall points for 3 years until only now Mike James surpassed him, and he is still 3rd in overall career assists 😂
I mean Llull and Rodriguez still play only to surpass him in points 🤣
Terrible management by Houston Rockets back then.

Only heard fo Spanoulis as I’m researching the European game, but the guys game is very Similar to Dragic though I feel Dragic is more talented and better.
Really wish him and other European players could’ve showed more in the NBA, though it’s probably great for European baskwtball he stayed in Europe and made a name for himself.
Still, I think many of the top Euroleague stars should try at least a year or two in the NBA. Even if they prefer being a star in Europe or simply not as good in the NBA like in Europe, I believe most European stars are all capable of being NBA level players and good ones.
I don’t think Spanoulis would’ve been a star, but I think a good backup sixth man or just a good role player in general.
Someone like a Bellinelli or maybe even a Bojan type player though Bojan is a really solid player though not impossible to think for someone like Spanoulis if he was given time.
Tbh if he was on the Nets who inwas a big fan of during this time, he could’ve been solid. We didn’t have a great bench during those years and didn’t have a good scorer off the bench outside maybe Nachbar. I think Marcus Willaims was our back point or Eddie House, but Spanoulis could’ve brought a great scoring punch.
Also maybe the Cavs would’ve been good for him? Considering it was a team built around Lebron with mostly role players, he could’ve brought some needed offense to that team off the bench.
I like his game and his ability to attack the basket is similar to the athletic guards of today.
