    Accidents happen. Be prepared to fight your own fire by learning how to use a fire extinguisher.
    Step 1: Know how fire extinguishers are classified
    Know how fire extinguishers are classified. Class A extinguishers are for common combustibles like paper or wood; Class B are for flammable liquids; and Class C are for electrical fires.
    Tip
    The Red Cross recommends ABC classified fire extinguishers for home use.
    Step 2: Inspect the fire extinguisher
    Inspect the fire extinguisher before use. Read instructions and warnings; check that the pressure gauge needle is in the green portion of the gauge; and check for a clogged nozzle, a broken seal, or other damage.
    Tip
    A fire extinguisher won’t work if it’s not properly charged. The pressure gauge measures the charge.
    Step 3: Decide if you'll evacuate or stay and fight
    Decide if you’ll evacuate or stay and fight the fire. Consider the size of the fire, the amount of smoke in the room, and whether there is a reliable escape route.
    Step 4: Remember the acronym PASS
    Remember the acronym PASS. It stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.
    Step 5: Pull the pin that unlocks the operating handle
    Pull the pin or ring that unlocks the fire extinguisher’s operating handle, and aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
    Tip
    Aim at the fire from 6 to 8 feet away.
    Step 6: Squeeze extinguisher lever to discharge contents
    Squeeze the extinguisher lever to discharge its contents, and sweep the hose back and forth until the extinguisher is empty.
    Did You Know?
    Food Network star Alton Brown used a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, a water cooler bottle, and a tennis racket to make a fruit smoothie on television.

    Thank you for this video, it's very useful. I've just inspected my fire extinguisher thoroughly and read all the instructions and warnings. The pressure gauge needle is in the green portion of the gauge. The nozzle seems fine, no broken seal, no other damage. Now I am trying to decide if I should evacuate my house or stay and try to put the fire out.

    For all the people saying that they don't have the time to watch the ad beforehand and joking about people dying because they didn't have time to check over the fire extinguisher- the idea is that you learn how to use the extinguisher before an emergency. If you've just purchased one for your home or you know where to access one, you should know how to use it. Also the check over takes about 3 seconds and in most cases you do have the time to do it

    I've never used a fire extinguisher before in my 22 years of life. I'm just watching this in case the time comes. I think they should bring in practice fire extinguishers to schools and have a day where they take the kids out and teach them to use it. Because if I hadn't have watched this video I wouldn't know about the pin and I may not have time to read the instructions in a crisis.

  • @ronliebermann
    @ronliebermann Před rokem +21

    Every commercial kitchen has these fire extinguishers. But in reality, grease fires are difficult to put-out, regardless of what kind of fire extinguisher you have.
    It might be helpful to make a blanket out of a non-flammable material, and then embed the fiber with Sodium Bicarbonate.
    So if there’s a kitchen fire, you unroll the blanket and throw it over the flames. The trapped gas should extinguish the blaze. They could make a small one for homes, and a big one for restaurants.

    DONT use a fire extinguisher on a person you could suffocate them to death

    • @leaf2180
      @leaf2180 Před 9 lety +11

      Nei Mina Not necessarily. a fire extinguisher wont suffocate you if you get sprayed with it. CO2 (class D) extinguishers will Freeze you a little bit. but extinguishers wont suffocate you. unless you spray down the throat

    • @MonstarChan3
      @MonstarChan3 Před 9 lety +29

      Ryan Fisher CO2 extinguishers work by displacing oxygen hence the name "CO2". So no oxygen = no breathing. During my clinicals our instructor told us about several stories where someone got sprayed with a CO2 extinguisher and had to go to the hospital because the foam was stuck to them and they couldn't breathe.

    • @jamesmichalek5406
      @jamesmichalek5406 Před 6 lety +7

      Make up your mind. Carbon Dioxide is a gas, and foam is very different.

    • @ancwar6767
      @ancwar6767 Před 6 lety +18

      Sabrina Monstar I think you should use a fire extinguisher on a person anyway, whether there is a chance of them suffocating or not. (Unless there is a safer way to quickly extinguish the fire). If they're literally burning to death you have to use it for on simple reason. If you attempt to help them: the best case scenario- they survive, the worst- there's a small chance, that they suffocate to death (Even so it's way less painful than burning to death). BUT if you do nothing, they most certainly die. So after calculating pros and cons, I can easily say that YOU should take the chances and use a fire extinguisher on them if there's no other way to save them.

    I've put out four car fires (of other people) on the freeway, not with fire extinguishers, but with cans of coke.
    Coke cans have a shelf life of almost one year. Leave a couple of cans in your car for four months and replace with new ones and refrigerate the old and drink them.
    If you are present when a car fire breaks out, shake the can vigorously and slighty pop the top and leave the can upright (so you'll get foam and not liquid) and spray the fire. Speed will ensure this works.

    You can keep cans of coke in each room of your house and do the same thing. The problem with fire extinguishers is that they must be charged every year so you're not going to have them in every room.
    As I mentioned in the other remark, rotate your coke cans and if you never have a fire, you won't be wasting hundreds of dollars recharging fire extinguishers or worse, grabbing one that you forgot to recharge.

    Should I do a practice run with my ABC extinguisher? Never used one before. Want to make sure I can use it... will I be able to get pin back in and return to normal? Where should I practice?

      +marissa deangelis You should practice but use that extinguisher until it is empty. Buy a second extinguisher before you practice so the new one will become your primary to use in case of fire. Because there is only about 10 to 15 seconds of charge on an extinguisher you should not reuse one unless the needle is still in the green (full) area on the gauge. You may be able to contact your local fire department to setup extinguisher training for you and your co-workers also.

    I don't think CZcams should put ads on this video.
