You're not an official carpenter on a This Old House project until you've framed a room with Norm.
Today the TOH apprentices -- Bailey, Austin and Nathan -- learn framing from the master.
Kevin enters through the new addition and goes up through the house to find them in the new master suite, framing the bathroom wall.
It's almost time to order cabinets for the kitchen. Kevin finds Joe and Liz meeting with a kitchen designer at a local cabinet company to discuss the final layout of the kitchen using 3-D software. Then they settle on a cabinet door style and narrow down the options for color.
Meanwhile, it's time for rough plumbing to start on the house. Richard takes time to teach the apprentices the basics. They start by building the drain stack for the new master bath.
Outside, the apprentices are making progress on the front porch. Kevin finds Tommy and his young crew laying fir decking on the frame they made last week. Using the old-school method of hammering, Tommy teaches them various tricks to nail in the fir boards.

Thats amazing getting to learn from Norm himself. That is something those interns will be talking about their entire lives.

it's nice that you show the interns useful time saving shortcuts. it is great to see the Masters teach the shortcuts because a lot of master Craftsmen won't shower the newbies anything but the basics.

You could shortcut some years.
The apprentices all showed a great deal of shiness when hammering nails. Give them a bag of nails and a scrap of wood and let them learn how to hit a nail with authority and confidence.
Arthur Roberts I learnt how to nail hand nailing of all joist hangers, gangnail plates and multigrips by hand, my boss always used to say, “let the apprentice feel em up by hand, you don’t need a nail gun if your’re a gun nailer

Take it from an active guy who is now 67. Norm bending over and nailing the frame is not the easiest thing he could do. I give him high marks for all the stooping, kneeling, and bending.

Where is EP7? Learn from Norm, remove years of unnecessary learning and mistakes. What a legend! Same for Tommy and Richard. What these guys don't know isn't worth knowing! Kevin just took up the role as host and nailed it! To be fair Kevin knows his s**t when it comes to construction / carpentry too.
A stairway to the old folks quarters ? Keeping the parents on first floor and putting study , hobby room or guest BR upstairs makes more practical sense .

Every plumbing rough I see with Richard, he dry fits everything then pulls it apart and glues it. I don’t dry fit something unless I have to. I wonder if they chamfer and sand down the outside so it fits nice and easy for tv. Also clear primer, that’s a big no no. I only use it on set outs
Dry fitting is good practice if you have multiple connections. You don't sand PVC because that is what primer is for. I used to sand CPVC when I didn't have any primer on emergency water line repairs and they hold fine although that really isn't the way to do it.
Clear primer/cleaner actually cleans the pipe and allows it to hold better, at least on CPVC. The purple primer is strictly for show to allow the work to pass inspection. Most plumbers actually use clear primer and then swab the connection with purple afterwards for inspection. Either Richard did that off-camera or nobody is going to question his work.

You guys are lucky. Our Building Departments do not allow using PVC piping for interior plumbing here in Bay Area
Really? Building in the Bay Area seems like a nightmare... Any particular reason? Would pvc not hold up in an earthquake, or are they just behind the times? I thought Chicago was bad with our plumbing and electrical codes. We finally went to NEC a few years ago, and now we're in the process of converting to the UPC.
I always loved norm he answered an add in the papers 40 years ago he was already a master craftsman at29 Bob villa would play the uninformed home owner even though he new alot more than he let on and norm would answer the questions that a novice would know as the show went on norm still had his own business but he would stop by and check on the job Bob would be working on and come by at the end of they day and see if everything had gone Bob would use the homeowners as his labor force

If you're working with a unit of lumber it's easier to saw through the whole stack than measure every stick, imo
I know this series is over and the apprenticeships are probably over, but do you teach your apprentices best safety practices or teach them about chemical SDS? I ask because your apprentice who was gluing pipes together above his head had his eye PPE was on the back of his head instead of over his eyes. I know I’m probably nitpicking here but just had to ask.
Why do you need to add witness marks on straight pipes? Wouldn't it not make a difference if they were turned?
Actually only good thing I learned from Tom Silva is that blunting the nails makes it split less, congrats tom!
I give it a couple years before that deck will have to be replaced....those nail are going to pull out and squeak so much.
It's about time those young-in's learned how to swing a hammer and how to drive nails, especially finish nails which can be a pain to drive without experience but Tom should have showed them how to set a nail with another nail because you're not always going to have a nail set. They should also really be doing more nailing by hand instead of using nail guns because it's a good skill to learn since you'll always have a hammer & nail and not a nail gun and air compressor. It's always best to learn how to do something two ways and start with the hard/old fashioned way.
IM 19, My grandad taught me how to nail with nail and oh man, lemme tell you how much its saved me sometimes! Especially when some contractor doesn't adjust his gun and doesn't completely drive his trim finish nails all the way in!!!

So did they get apprentices because that's the new cool thing to do...or because Norm and Tommy are both in their 70s?
It's part of TOH Next Generation initiative. Teaching the building trades to a new generation of young people and helping them get started in an industry that needs more skilled workers over the next 10-20 years.

It's part of the show and not the first time they have had them. Nathan actually does some ATOH jobs on his own. He's at least reversed an entrance door and changed kitchen cabinets to soft close hinges and slides.

Why frame inside walls with 2x6? More weight to handle, more $, and it eats floor space. Every two 2x6 walls equals three 2x4 walls of floor space.
It's more money but it's better.
They mentioned a pocket door was going in there. I would guess that gives them a little more thickness to handle the pocket door framing.
Of they were already framing the rest of the new work with 2x6 it makes sense to just buy all 2x6 for the walls.

They don't typically post brand new episodes here. These are season 39 from Oct 2017-June 2018. Latest season was season 41 ending in May of this year. Season 41 can be seen on pbs.org

Such an incredibly irresponsible way of building. Wasting wood just because of a small split or a fractional cut all because of that man's OCD. No wonder this planet is dieing.
It will be reused where it can be cut down to a smaller size. Just because it's on TV doesn't mean they're not a professional company. It's not exactly cheap to get a company like Silva Brothers Construction to do your renovations. You're easily looking at $60,000.00 to $80,000.00 not including materials or what the TOH crews are charging to do a HUGE job like this.

Just because these are the established rules doesn't mean they can't be changed. The amount of waste and gluteny that comes out of traditional stick frame building is ludacris. It's not sustainable. There are better ways of operating.

You know damned good and well that when those cameras are off and the real hourly labor comes in to do the actual work, that board is either staying or getting thrown in the trash pile. I'm not pointing out a particular company. I'm just saying in the real world, on average,, on most jobs throughout the U.S. that board would have stayed or been trashed.
...and it is not sustainable. The entire (stick frame) industry is outdated, bad for the environment, and inefficient.

Unfortunately This is Old House is trying too hard to be politically correct with the selection of apprentices...Loved this show since the 1980s, but not so much anymore...
So because they aren't white guys it's about political correctness? You are aware that women and people of color are more than capable of working in the trades? I can't see the point of your ridiculous statement. If anything, the need to have diversity in the apprentices is shown in your comment.
