  • I build Telecaster style guitar for the great guitar build off 2020 unofficial out of pallet and epoxy resin.
    My Website: magicatticguitars.com/
    Guitars for slae: magicatticguitars.com/shop/
The great guitar build off 2020 unofficial competition is over. If you would like to be up to date on it make sure to follow me on my Instagram: @magicatticguitars.
This is a full guitar build video. I used Fender Telecaster guitar shape for the reference and change the shape a bit, so it is not an exact copy. I used my own headstock design and I think it fits the guitar design well. So I end up with this semi-custom guitar design 😆
This guitar build was a big challenge because I never worked with epoxy resin on this scale. I made a lot of mistakes along the way and I learned how to fix them or avoid them in the future, so I can say it was a very educational build for me. I hope you can also learn something from this video.
I used an old pallet for this guitar and I think the discoloration of the wood made a very cool effect on the guitars body. It was a challenge to prepare and brake all the pieces and make them in to a Stratocaster guitar shape. It took 420 pieces and a lot of time to complete the body.
Epoxy resin I used on this guitar is Dipon De 3D epoxy. It is a deep casting epoxy resin that cures very slowly and because of that it lets all the bubbles out before drying. They claim it is possible to achieve crystal clear bubble free end results without even using vacuum. Obviously I failed in this part. First thing I should do is properly sealing the wood with a coat of epoxy. And the second thing was my poorly made mold as you see in the video. So we will see if this is true in the next guitar build. It also has a good UV resistance and is 100% transparent without yellow tint. Over all I liked to work with this epoxy resin and can already recommend it, so I will put the link below.
I would like to thank Roman Lužar from Teal for giving me some tools and letting me to engrave my logo on the back plate with his laser.
I used the same epoxy resin for finishing the guitars body, and I used Crimson guitars finishing oil for the neck. I put two coats of penetrating guitar oil and 2 coats of high build guitar oil. I really love this product. It gives a nice natural look and feel to the wood. It is much more pleasant on the touch than most finishes and it makes less friction while playing, so I highly recommend using it especially on guitar necks. Find the ling below.
It took three months for the whole guitar build and another three for editing this video. I recorded 300 GB of footage and edited it all by myself. There is another video coming out where I recorded the sound and I will try to make a shorter edit of guitar building and playing. Thanks to my sis Ilona, bro Ezav and friend Simon for helping me to film the sound demo. And thanks to Erik Šnajder for playing the guitar. Check out his youtube channel: / kuractegleda123

@@applebutter4036 man i totally get you. I hope you at least have bigger workshop then mine. Often it is hard to work when you are trying to keep your hands out of viewers angle. For the lights I bought three strong led bulbs and desk light stands so I can move them around as needed. It is important that your main light sources have a consistent colour temperature. Its probably the best if all bulbs are identical. Otherwise it is hard to adjust white balance.

I’ll say this to all those out there that buy a body and a neck and all the hardware and call themselves builders, you are assemblers. This man and many more I know personally that make their bodies and necks are builders. Don’t give up though assemblers, and be proud of the work you put in, start building if you’ve always wanted to. There’s never enough guitars in the world.

Wow, excellent work! That's one unique awesome looking guitar!
Use a propane blowtorch instead of a heat gun to remove the bubbles next time; it removes way more bubbles and does a much faster job of it!
Also, painting a layer of epoxy onto the surface with a paintbrush, especially the broken wood surface, being sure to stab the brush into all the nooks and crannies, saturating every inch of exposed wood before pouring the epoxy is another very effective way of preventing any bubbles or air pockets from forming on the surface of the wood (bottom of the epoxy) When epoxy is poured straight on to a dry surface, rough/porous surfaces are an air pocket's best friend and they stand out so much in an end product, especially when the epoxy is clear!

What you'll learn over the next few months and years (presumed you keep that guitar that long) is that cured epoxy resin shrinks over a long period of time. Ask me how I know that...

Awesome job, I built mine for my 40th birthday 14 years ago and my divorce depression.. I made a small mistake too on my bridge, not too bad though.
I know all the hard work, hours & effort that you put into it & very cool guitar way to go 👍👍
Having a guitar where you cut the holes and do every piece yourself is the way to go because you truly have a custom piece.
Keep up the excellent building my man👍

FYI Michael - The guitar in this video has a 25" scale. A normal Fender style neck you could buy wouldn't work (25.5" scale). Anyway, the guy obviously already has the tools and woodworking experience so its a LOT cheaper to make a neck yourself.

    • @MagicAtticGuitars
      @MagicAtticGuitars  Před 3 lety +6

@@CraigHagerman that's true. If you are building your own neck you have more freedom on the features and design. My neck has also 12Inch radius and very different headstock than original telecaster.
And it is cheaper if you don't count all of the hours of work:) thanks for your comment!

Read everything you can find about the famous brands and gain knowlege then just do it. I built my first wood guitar out of scrap maple and walnut i found in a dumpster. Save yourself some big problems by building a neck through, then you dont have to hassle with the neck body joint. Cool! Also, buy a harley davidson as soon as you can afford one, that and building your own guitars and youll have a happy lif early on.
