      @davidsaylors  Před 5 lety +3

      Once you stop it down a stop, it seems to get easier to get focus for me. Most of the shots of the singing were done at 1/15 second due to the poor lighting in the room, still got some sharp ones! I kinda likes the motion blur added by the slow shutter too, tells a better story in my mind.

    I'm beginning to wonder if it's possible to exhaust the supply of seemingly unlimited number of decent, affordable vintage lens models make by Nikon! Seems like every time I look, there's another lens out there that I'd never heard of, including the lens in this review. It's a little bit of a coincidence in that I was shooting in and near Annapolis, MD (it was hot...) today using a very similar vintage lens - the Nikon 28-105mm 3.5 - 4.5 D auto focus. It also has a nice macro function. It wasn't quite as cheap as the AI-S lens, but it IS nice to have the auto focus. Anyway, thanks for the review! Cheers : )

      @davidsaylors  Před 5 lety +2

      Me too, I dont know when they had time to design all these different variants like this, but they are out there! I have the 35-135mm autofocus lens and it is a really good lens too... Annapolis sound s like a a cool place to do some street photography too, how is that?

    • @GreginMD
      @GreginMD Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, I was the one who asked you to review that 35-135mm lens! I remember you included it in a previous video, so I wanted to know your thoughts on it. I also have that one. In near new condition as well. I don't use it often, but it IS a nice lens. Annapolis... Being on the water, and in many ways a tourist town, it is definitely a good place for street photography. It was just too hot yesterday though, and I had a bunch of family with me so I mainly took photos of them instead of the surroundings. But it's close, so there's always next time!

      @@davidsaylors I live in Austin. The Little Vine Baptist (Ind) in North Austin sings Sacred Harp and when I was taking a graduate level music of America course when at UT back in the 70s I got into it and went to my first singing Saturday back then. Then I went to another in the early 80s just after we had kids but since that wasn't my wife's idea of church music I didn't force the issue. I took me back to my family reunions back in the 50s when I was a little kid in Stephenville Tx. We had 11 preachers (10 Meth & 1 Bapt) on the "official" rolls so when the the family got together at the park pavilion, there usually was some hymn singing goin' on.

    If using a film camera, does zooming in the lens automatically make the aperture 4.5? Or you still need to put the aperture ring to 4.5 for your lightmeter to catch up?

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  Před 3 lety

      I dont know, but I think it does. Most newer film cameras have spot metering and could adjust shutter speed to accommodate so when this lens was popular, it probably wasnt a problem.

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  Před 3 lety

      The front lens element is usually held in by either screws from the front ring or a threaded ring with little notches in it. This is usually behind the text as well. The text is on a sticker normally and once you peel that off the ring or screws can be accessed. I don’t remember exactly how this lens is assembled in particular though, so I am guessing here, but that is normally how they are done. Good luck!!!

    Great video David! I was wondering, when adding it to non-cpu lens, how do you enter it? 35mm f3.5? 105 f4.5? An average?

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  Před 4 lety

      It isn't really important other than for the exif data, that is all that it is used for, so the camera knows what the aperture is set at when it writes the data for the image. That is why I don't worry too much about it, if you have more than one 35mm lens, I would pick some sort of outlandish f stop value for the zoom so when you are looking at the images, you can find it in the exif data easily....

    David.....there are 2 things that I really believe new people getting into DSLR photography don't know ! ( I was one of those people a few years ago) # 1 Most don't realize that the Lens is most important factor in good sharp photos # 2 That you don't need to buy the super expensive lens for really sharp professional looking photos ! My latest inexpensive lens I bought was the Nikon 28-85mm 3.5-4.5 (its an older lens , not sure what series it is but it does have auto focus) I give $140 shipping included , I bought this lens after I seen great reviews about this great bargain lens , well it did not disappoint .......... its one of my favorites now ! I have seen it, but I have never used one of them. Just one more example of the equipment is out there if you know where to look... You are absoloutly right, the lens is the main part of the equation for great photos, but the camera companies need to sell camera bodies so their marketing departments tell you that you need the newest camera to get good photos...and people believe them. Thank you for sharing this!!!
