The Spyderco Sage 5 Pocketknife: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

  • The Spyderco Sage 5 is the next entry in the Sage line of EDC knives, featuring Spyderco's Compression lock. I've already reviewed the Sage 1 and the Sage 2, but the Sage 5 with a stellar locking mechanism turns out to be a very different affair.
    So, while the 1 and 2 were big bowls of vanilla, the 5's got enough flavor to be a damned good choice for EDC, and a rock solid Gem.

    I love the Sage 5. Compression lock, CPM S30V, wire pocket clip, everything about this knife. I had the PM 2, but sold it. It was too big in the pocket, I didn't like the pocket clip, and the tip of the blade, due to its shape, is very weak and prone to breakage. The leaf shape blade on the Sage is much stronger at the tip. But without a doubt, the compression lock is why I buy a Spyderco knife. I'm not interested in any other locking mechanism. Great all-around EDC knife.

    The Sliverax after a flipper delete is like my ideal version of the Sage 5 tbh. If they do a Sliverax or sage 5 sprint run, give it a slightly less smooth comp lock plate and slightly more of a right scale cutaway for access to it on the sliver, throw some k390, m4 or s110v on it, and they would just about be my perfect knives.

  • @slyphon
    @slyphon Před 7 lety +1

    In terms of the sage line, I picked up a Sage 4 as a gift for my dad, and I was blown away by the fit and finish (it's a taichung). The ironwood scales are classy as hell and feel good in the hand, and while I'm not a huge fan of backlocks (because it makes flicking nearly impossible) the authority with which the Sage 4 locks up is impressive. The sound is enormously satisfying, and a testament to the tolerances spyderco was able to build this knife with. Also, the backlock, when the knife is open, meets up with the scales *perfectly*, which is a detail I really appreciated.
    Anyway, I know it's a collector's item (I saw one on ebay for around $350 recently) but it's well worth getting one if you can snag it for ~$200 (which I was able to).
    Thanks for another great review!

  • @ts859
    @ts859 Před 6 lety +2

    If you look into it, the reason spyderco uses leaf shaped blades on some of their tougher knifes such as the Manix 2 and the Native 5 or even the new Shaman because it significantly increases tip strength. It has nothing to do with how much blade is sticking out. The PM2 and the Delica both have "Pizza slice" shaped blades. The Delica 4 fixed this issue but I still see PM2's being broken at the tip. The leaf shaped blade prevents this to a further extent.

    • @ts859
      @ts859 Před 6 lety

      I know that. and im not bashing the pm2 by any means. Of course a major issue with using knives as pry tools is that they are not intended for that. i would never recommend using a cutting edge to do the job of a pry bar. If you absolutely have to i would recommend using something such as a esee izula or something else made of carbon steel. Also the s110v Pm2 is not the standard so not exactly a fair comparison

      I own multiple versions of the pm3/pm3 lightweight, shaman, manix 2/manix 2 lightweight and the sage 5 and I personally think the sage 5 is 100x better than the pm3 lightweight. The sage 5 action is one of the best if not the best I've seen on a spyderco, fit and finish is better than my pm3s and ergos are amazing! I would take if I could just have 2 knifes a bigger one and smaller edc size lightweight I would DEFINITELY take the shaman and sage 5!! I carry them both occasionally now. Lol. most people that would say para3 hands down don't actually own them both and probably havnt even handled the sage 5. It's the most overlooked model in its class by far on my opinion.

    This was a really helpful review that resulted in me getting a Sage 5. I found that the compression lock came really tight and restricted the blade deploying as robustly as I would like as well as not dropping shut. After adjusting the compression lock by bending it slightly, both have improved immensely. Other good news is that the Sage 5 did not come with any Loctite which made taking it apart really easy.

You didn’t raise concerns in this review but man, the first moment I opened the Sage 5 I was surprised at just how hot a spot could be. Just got a sage 5. Out of the box the action was stiff and had lock stick on the compression lock.
    The pivot was screwed down as tight as possible. I disassembled it, cleaned, oiled. Put it back together and fiddled with the pivot tension. Loosening the pivot improved the lock stick and action, not perfect but better. If I loosen the pivot enough to get it drop shut smooth, it leaves the blade off center. So right now I've sort of compromised and have the blade slightly off center with a relatively smooth action but far from drop shut smooth. Any suggestions other than letting it break in? Thanks.

    Is it just me, or is the Sage 5 not as smooth as the PM2 on opening or closing? I handled one again this afternoon,and it needs more effort to close than the "easily falls shut" PM2. Even the new Cruwear one which only showed up this week felt as slick as oiled glass - just like the other PM2 models which have been there the past year.
    Maybe it's the construction of the Sage 5, or something else about the tolerances at Taichung. The Mantra 2 needed a bit of tinkering, and isn't quite as smooth as, say, the Native 5 40th Anniversary Edition (which was also a new arrival, but like the other Native 5's I've handled, closes and opens perfectly. It's something that the Golden factory is extremely good at, IMO.

    is the handle on this sage 5 slimmer than the pm2 or is it about the same? it seems like a nicer version of the manix. since im right handed as the lord intended i love the compression lock as well. i do prefer the blade shape of the pm2 as well over the leaf shape and since im in the need for a new pm2 and manix at 130 bucks the sage is appealing.
    while youre waiting on a smaller pm2 i just want a compression lock police or military lol. i need a big ass compression lock knife in my life. i keep telling myself i dont need the 0452cf but lets face it. i do.

Windows used to come with Moviemaker.. I've used that for a while but that doesn't work.. now I got Sony Movie Studio. Now we have the opposite problem. It can do so much that even the simple things are a problem. Sometimes it's hard to stay true to your Windows machine. Especially when doing youtube videos. But what I heard from all my apple-virus-infected friends is, that the great camera is the main attraction of the new iPhone so I think you'll be pleased. Do you use a Mac for cutting and so on or still a PC? Or are you one of those modern type people that do it on their phone? Have a great Saturday Nick!

    It seems like Spyderco is holding off on the "PM3" until they sell some Sage 5 inventory. A PM3 would've smoked Sage 5 sales in my opinion, and that's probably bad business. Perspicacious review as always, Nick.

    • @Deadtileyedie
      @Deadtileyedie Před 3 lety

      The sage 5 is better in my opinion and I own both the pm3 and pm3 lightweight. I love the pm3 the ergos on the sage are AMAZING and way better than the pm3. That's personal opinion but alot of people get the para and never give the sage the chance and if they did they would probably take the sage as well.

    Hey Nick $150 budget can you help me decide on an EDC. I'm thinking Sage 5, Para 3 lightweight, Para 3, Mini Freek, or Mini Grip.

    • @Deadtileyedie
      @Deadtileyedie Před 3 lety +1

      I own all them but the mini grip and the sage 5 gets more carry for me. You hear alot about the paras because that's the go to. Try them in hand and the action on both first then I bet you will see why I said the sage 5. The ergos are amazing!

      @@Deadtileyedie The knife addiction got the best of me. I started with the Para 3 LW then I bought the Sage 5. Both are nice. I'm probably going to buy the Griptilian in 20CV and G10 next.

  • @TS-sc9lq
    @TS-sc9lq Před 7 lety

    I concur the leaf blade shape is pointless! If only the Para3 came with a well designed pocket clip (Delica 4) It kinda bugs me that I would pay the same $ for the Para3 as my Para2 and still have to order another deep carry clip for it! Sheesh!
