  • Want to measure how tall your frets are without buying a dedicated luthiers caliper? In this video, I explain and demonstrate the great tip I found from Fred Ford on frets.com. A grinder made quick work of this for me, but you can also simply use a hacksaw or files to make the notch and cut. Sandpaper to finish the job.

A note on the Jay Turser bass fretwork - I did a level and crown and still have buzzing (new strings are on). The fret ends were sticking up on quite a few before I did the job. I tried to hammer them in before and after, to no real success. This is not a high quality instrument manufacturer. The frets are all level as indicated by my fret rocker, but the height varies from ~ 0.046 to 0.056 around the fretboard. Indicates a variance in fret seating. [One caveat is, I did not have a bass scale notched straight edge but used a few other methods to straighten the neck. I may do my first refret ever using the Jay Turser as a test candidate.] This was also my first time changing bass strings. Lifelong learning is the goal!
