    Great question. That would definitely lower the exposure, but shortening the shutter speed also removes natural-looking motion blur, creating a stutter between frames. That's why the general rule of thumb is shutter that's half the framerate. (24 fps = 1/50s, 30fps = 1/60s)
    You could also close the aperture, but that increases your depth of field. That's why ISO exists, so you can change exposure while keeping aperture and shutter constant, but when you run out of ISO to change, you need an ND.

  • @indymogul
    @indymogul  Před 11 lety

    The audio files are in order, so with only 12 interviews, it's not too hard to figure out which ones match up. I listen to each for a second to verify before starting the synchronization. I also import them into FCPX at the end of each day, so it's easy to keep them organized.

    good info. A while back I flew from NJ to SFO for a doco interview series. Air Tran, I had all my clothes camera, lav, cables shoved in the carry on. I followed the rules and then sat there and watched other passengers come on with bags so large they could have carried a dead body or two. I borrowed lights and tripod when I got to town, that saved a lot (as well as staying at a former colleagues home.).

  • @indymogul
    @indymogul  Před 11 lety

    Perhaps I'll do that in an upcoming episode. In the mean time, or if I don't get the opportunity, here's the workflow.
    1) I pop in the SD card, attach the 1TB hard drive.
    2) The SD card has three folders-I copy all of them to a folder on the 1TB hard drive. That's my first backup, original directory structure intact.
    3) I disconnect the hard drive and launch FCPX. Using the import window, I import all the SD card clips into FCPX. This copies them to the internal hard drive.

    First I'll make it available to Kickstarter backers online. (I'm hoping to launch the Kickstarter Sunday, June 16.) Then, film festivals in the spring, and then I'd love to distribute it broadly, perhaps through CZcams, iTunes, Netflix-we'll see what happens!

    @indymogul  Před 11 lety

    Yeah, this is dramatically different (worse) audio!
    It's a heavy backpack, especially with a laptop in it, but it's much easier to lug around than a shoulder-strap camera bag. If I leave a few unnecessary items at the hotel, it's no problem wearing the backpack while shooting. So it's a super mobile setup.

    If your looking for cheap portable film lights for interviews there is CN-600 LEDs that run 250-350$ depending on who is distributing them.
    Used one along side two of my University's more expensive Litepanel LEDs when filming interviews at a convention, and got no noticeable difference besides slightly more spill on the Litepanels. I was also able to fit all 3 into one Litepanel case with slight rearrangement.

Woke up at 4am to get a timelapse on the sunrise over NYC (It's in my channel)

  • @indymogul
    @indymogul  Před 11 lety

    That's a good guideline, but sometimes it's worth breaking if you want a different look, or if you need it just a little darker. You can close your aperture, but that will make more of the frame in focus. It's another tradeoff that you may or may not be willing to deal with.
    An ND filter is certainly not a must-have piece of gear, but it makes my life easier.

    @danmcmahon11 Před 11 lety

    Griffin, it may seem simple but I think it would be really helpful for a lot of us if you could film the work-flow from the moment you've finsihed recording, then taking the SD card and copying it to your TB hard drive and then importing the files into final cut. I'd just like to see the steps you take after after the red light goes off (: Some of that b-roll looks awesome btw, I'm really excited for this documentary!

    Sounds like a bitrate issue, that your videos are getting super compressed. Look for a setting to increase the quality, or manually raise the bitrate. This video is H.264-compressed at 3Mbps. For higher quality, I sometimes go to 5Mbps or 8Mbps. I consider 15Mbps broadcast quality, but that's too big and unnecessary for web video.

I was considering the Reflex LR10 (I have a D800 and I thought the bigger shoulder rig might be better for the bigger camera plus it has a long handle that seems that it would work better for very low shots). Looks like a quality unit at a great price. Would you buy the Reflex again? Any other possibilities that I should consider?

I've heard some folks hot gluing a right angle connector on the outside of a GH2. I had planned to open the GH2 up and solder a wire but the connector looks somewhat unaccessible.
