Aftermath of a Bear Attack on our Hives [Will the bees survive?]

  • A bear attack is never a good thing, especially if you're a beekeeper. They can really do some damage to your hives, and more times than not, they don't even clean up the mess. ;-)
That's where we join John and Corinne in this video. After spotting the hives toppled over, Corinne notified John and they went to work. This area isn't necessarily a great spot for an electric fence, but we may have to make some adjustments to make sure Mr Bear doesn't return for a free meal.
If you're a beekeeper, you know how tough it can be to raise a successful hive year after year. With things like bears, storms, and heat - sometimes it can seem like an uphill battle. Luckily, Central Beekeepers Supply is here to help. We carry all kinds of equipment to help you keep bees healthy and happy all year long. From feed to hive boxes, cone traps to protective gear, we have it all. Come by and see us in beautiful Russellville, Arkansas - located conveniently off of I-40. Or visit us at our online store at www.centralbeekeeperssupply.com. Thanks for watching!

We've been keeping bees since around 1975. Never had bear problems until they blasted the top of a mountain about 15 years ago to put up wind turbines. The bears move down into the valley. The only thing that worked keeping them out of the hives is 4 strands of electric fence with a little peanut butter. And the honest charger I could find. No more problems.

Here in New-Brunswick, the Blueberry field are cutting everything "clean cut" and people are starting to see more black bear and new bear where it was never a problem before. I use patriot p20 and the big male 800lbs still try the fence once every 2week. He broke 3top wire on 5wire and run away "lucky bee"

It only flipped over one, and from the looks of it, it left in a hurry.
No frames were scattered around, so....
A bear usually leaves the frames scraped clean of brood.
The pain was probably too much.
      Un-bearable, as it were.

John, I feel for you. I have had the same thing in past years. You actually came out pretty good. Once i found parts of my hives half way up the mountain. You are right they just want the brood they care nothing for honey. He will be back they will not quit. He will be back in the evening just at dark . I have cured that problem several times. I live about 100 miles north of you in Osage.

Thankfully the Ark Game & Fish provided us with a 7k volt module to put up an electric fence. Of course we had to supply the fencing and wire. So now my 3 little hives are behind 7k volts… Sure hope your hives recoup and that bear stays away.

Have you thought about running a hot wire around your hives? I've seen several people who use both a hardwired and a solar powered system along with using straps and ratchet straps to hold the boxes together and shock the heck out of the bear as a deterrent. They usually don't want to try again after the pain of the hot wire, being unable to knock it over and spread the combs for a quick grab & run before the bees could drive him off. After a bunch of pain and no rewards they learn to go elsewhere for their treat. Like a well placed and full bird feeder his nose is telling him is not far away. Bird seed is like the best candy there is besides honey to a bear.

@@CentralBeekeepersSupply I am a new beekeeper and I didn’t get my bees 🐝 until like 1st week of may so I’ve basically been feeding them all summer so they could build up their hive. The lower brood box is now full and they’ve started building up the second level brood box. They were getting very aggressive when I was changing their feeders out on the frt of the hive and they were stinging my suit and one slipped inside and stung me on my cheek. I couldn’t understand why they were getting so aggressive just changing their feeders so I checked the CZcams channels and saw several reasons. 1) possible was I might have been nervous about being stung and transmitting it to the bees making them in alert. 2) I was moving too fast and needed to slow down and act like a tree. Tree’s don’t get stung and last 3) I was making the rookie mistake of inspecting the hive too often and keeping the bees on high alert and edgy. So I slowed down a lot take slow deep breaths to calm myself down, smoked my suit really well and put a schedule in place to inspect the hive once every two weeks. Hopefully they will get calm enough where I can handle them eventually without a full suit.

I do not know how true it was but I heard years ago that bears like the larvae better than the honey. I guess that would be for the protein they would get out of it but not sure about that. Here in central NC we really don’t have bears here but there have been some spotted ever now an then . I am planning on putting hot fences up around all three of my yards just because damage to one colony in each yard would pay for the hot fence plus having to clean up all the debris. Is a pain . Why spend so much time explaining, fix it first and then explain. Its not just you, it seems all you tubers do this. Yours isn't so bad but when you watch an injured horse suffering while they stand there explaining what they have to do......so frustrating.
