  • I just recently picked up a new boat...the Prijon Grizzly. The Grizzly is the heir to the Prijon throne for the long-distance load hauler. In this video, I give a detailed walk-through and review as well as a little history on my journey to find the perfect touring boat.

    The "paddle holder" is to aid in re-entry. Particularly for paddle floats and/or rescue stirrup techniques.

      I figured as much. Never seen it with bungee instead of rigid lines though.

    Just started this video, showed my wife your boat shed, to prove everything is very relative, so relatively speaking, my 2 boats isnt that many (one is a p and h Scorpio, #longboat)

  • @coffinshaker
    @coffinshaker Před 10 měsíci +2

    I believe based on other boats I've owned that the bungee behind the seat you were referring to as a paddle holder is actually used to secure the paddle when you're using a paddle float to reenter the boat if you get unloaded in the water.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  Před 10 měsíci

      Yes, I mentioned that in the video as a possibility, however the bungee part would be a bit less than stable it seems, perhaps better than a static line that may break the paddle?

    Awesome Boat Pete!!
    You are going to love having a long boat. They sure eat up the miles.
    FWIW. The “Paddle Holder”? It is used so you can get into the boat without getting wet feet. With the paddle set in place you can use it as a brace, then get into the kayak with one foot, then the next. They are a few Videos CZcams that show how to do so. It works really well if you NEED dry feet.
    We look forward to your videos to come with you paddling this awesome boat!

    Great yak. I've been using an old 17' Prijon Kodiak for the last 10 years. It has more storage and a larger back hatch than any boat I've seen which is great for multi-day camp trips but it's heavy, slow, very uncomfortable and terrible for 180 turns. I've been looking for another long haul touring boat and the Grizz has been in my sights. Thanks for the detailed review.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  Před 10 měsíci

      I would not say the kodiak was slow, but it is horrendous at maneuvering...which means phenomenal at going straight...I do like the Grizzly better though!!

    Hey Pete, awesome video. I have been looking at this model and after your video it just confirmed me on getting one myself. I thought i saw on there website there was only 2 suppliers in the US. One in Buffalo whom i spoke with amd one in New Eng🎉land i believe.

    missed the live premier... but that boat seems like one that could explore the Apostle Islands. I had a great trip in August 2010 up there doing about 50 miles in 3 days, but only covering sand, york, bear, raspberry and eagle, along with the sand caves south of Eagle

  • @seeratlasdtyria4584
    @seeratlasdtyria4584 Před 9 měsíci +2

    appears to have a very nice glide, but Definitely easier turning than my Kodiak :) Wow, that nose is something else looks darned thin too. I found that I could influence the Kodiak's turning substantially by shifting my seating position a few inches fore and aft (i'm a lot heavier than RK :) in addition to careful distribution of my cargo. I have to agree with Medawgoner that I *think* isn't so much a paddle holder but rather its there to help with re-entry:)

    Cruising at 4.8, they do 12 mile races here @ 6+ mph.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  Před 10 měsíci

      yes, They also have boats that cruise up at 10mph on flat water. The trade-off for a boat that can handle rocks, tons of gear and still be somewhat fast is a slightly decreased speed. We typically do 40 to 45 miles in a day for a week at a time. We are def not racing when we do these trips, rather, just getting down that river at a reasonable pace. I tried to paddle with that same output of energy for the review. I did manage to sprint it at 8mph for a brief period. I do race whitewater kayaks down whitewater rivers. Such a blast! Those paddlers doing the marathon races down long rivers are impressive!

    Hi Pete,
    I'm looking to get into some river touring. Not prepared at this point to spending big bucks for a new kayak until I build some experience. The goal is multiday, more than weekend, camping tours. Not interested in heavy whitewater, but don't want to be restricted to completely flat rivers either.
    At present I've been looking for a used Wilderness Systems Tsunami 145. I have lots of canoe experience, but little in a kayak.
    The question is, can you recommend any other reasonably priced used boats I should be considering for this purpose.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

      Check out more videos on this channel. You'll probably get stuck with the Prijon Yukon Expedition (he also did a review on this one), which is pretty much
      the "allrounder" you're looking for. I found a decent one on the internet and I'm happy with it.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  Před 10 měsíci

      Prijon Yukon Expedition is THE boat for what you are doing. They dont make them anymore and a by-product of the channel is that there is a cult following for them now. They pop up from time to time on marketplace and craigslist...be quick! Two other boats that I recommend over the Tsunami are the Dagger Stratos 145 and the Prijon Enduro (Prijon's replacement design for the Yukon).

      @topalien10 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @RiverKingsKayak It's pretty much my first so I don't have much to compare it to. I wouldn't say "unmaneuverable" but I wouldn't do more than class three in it. It's never had me swimming, but ya gotta dig deep to get her to do fancy foot work. Keep up the great content 👏. When's the next camping expedition?

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  Před 9 měsíci

      I had the 14.5 so not so fast. If I remember correctly, I was getting just under 4 mph...so a little faster than the Yukon.
