  • During the 2021 Edinburgh International Festival, our Head of Music Andrew Moore sat down with Thomas Quasthoff for a conversation about about retiring from opera, his passion for jazz and his future plans.
German magazine Der Stern described bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff as ‘the man with the most beautiful voice in the world’. And though a classical singer by training, he’s a musician with remarkable expertise and insights across many musical genres. He brings the same sense of sincerity and unerring good taste to all he performs, whether it’s opera or art song, folk or jazz. At the 2021 festival he led a masterclass and performed with the Thomas Quasthoff Quartet, as well as taking on the role of Major-domo in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos.

He has such a beautiful voice. His command of English is delicious, he's very articulate. And a delightful, subtle sense of humor. A real star in every sense.

An absolute delight to hear this interview with Thomas Quasthoff. What a marvelous musician--truly a marvel, and a lovely human being. I hope you bring him back often to Edinburgh. We were there several months ago. I can see why he likes your city and its people. Kind regards.

So great to see Maestro Quasthoff is well! He got me through my struggle years in private voice when I did my undergrad in music composition. I referenced many of his videos during my prep for selected art songs. I remember him brought meaning to every note and word. I wish him a long and happy retirement!
