  • Every time we scroll, we’re bombarded with ads and sponsored content. Much of this is delivered directly by social media influencers, including child influencers. In an attention economy, creators are pressured to use clickbait and sensationalism to engage viewers. However, this can have a perilous effect on both the influencer and audience. Alyson explores the implications of using children in corporate marketing campaigns, and the new era of digital exploitation for both child stars and normal kids alike.

I’m not going to lie, I skip ads every single time, unless there is a compelling reason to let it play….like knowing the money is going to someone who needs it.
I fully agree that influencers shouldn’t expected to be perfect role models. Every time someone begs a narcissistic influencer with a 6th grade education to express empathy for recent victims, or discuss a complex political issue, I just wonder “why”? I’d rather hear about important topics from people who are educated and passionate on the topic.

I have never seen an advertisement that made me wanna buy a product. The only exceptions are maybe a video game trailer I was already waiting for to come out. Ads HAVE however, given me the indignation to refuse ever buying a product on the basis that their ads annoy me so much. So I already associate it negatively.

As my kids quickly outgrew their favorite CZcams channels (like Super Simple Songs and Cocomelon) AND learned to control the TV remote, I realized they were frequently clicking their way to all kinds of "kidfluencer" videos and I ended up putting a stop to that. It's ridiculous how much advertising is directed at children, and now that it's pushing its way into streaming services it feels almost inescapable! Paying money to avoid the ads seems just as ridiculous; it's like these big corporations are determined to get our money one way or another. Yet I'm still not willing to abandon ALL media... 🙄

Great epsiode! As a consumer I DO expect that an influencer will do a bare minimum amount of research into something they're going to promote (flashback to the days of unscientific "flat tummy teas" flooding our Instagram feeds) but I DON'T demand that they espouse a nuanced take on every ongoing geopolitical conflict.
A CZcamsr I'd highly recommend is Leena Norms, she's made a couple of videos talking about why and how she rejected certain sponsors who approached her with ethically dubious products.

    • @kateduggan2827
      @kateduggan2827 Před 7 měsíci +4

100% agree, Love Leena's videos around this. I tend to let the ads play for influences but don't often buy the product. Partially because I live in New Zealand so more often than not shipping is a barrier for purchase. The only sponsored content I have purchased is a VPN advertised from a creator I love. It was their first sponsor and a product I was wanting anyway. Many influencers I enjoyed had deals with the brand an it felt like I have to choose the right creator's affiliate. It was a strange feeling.

I used to be perfectly okay with creators doing sponsorships because I mean, they have to live somehow. But lately, with the addtion of adds in stories and reels, it's quite annoying, and if I see a creator there I definetly get annoyed at them as well. This video has helped me redirect that annoyance to the real enemy, which is capitalism, so thank you so much for everything you're doing Alyson!

Your point about people generally “all trying to do their best in a broken system” caught my attention. I do believe that a majority of people are not consciously out to be greedy or malicious or oppressive of whatever group or people might be under them, but I would argue that the system isn’t broken. The system of capitalism functions exactly how it is supposed to, which is to make a select few groups of people very wealthy while exploiting everyone else along the way. There needs to be an intentional and concerted effort to dismantle the system and build a new and better one, not just examine and try to fix small issues that ultimately won’t change anything

Would make great use your perfectionistic tendencies, while also giving opportunities to let them go when they get in the way. Of course, everyone in the spotlight will be tempted by the sponsored life or feel its a necessity... but in some cases it surely isnt. But if they mention a product I think might be nice for me, I go externally to find it. I don't click on their links. I go to the companies directly and do more research or go to review sites and read more reviews.

I really appreciate you talking about this Alyson. It’s something that more people should be talking about. I don’t know about you, but it’s clear to me that this money-driven individualistic attitude that most people have is not sustainable if we want things to get better for everyone. Personally, I despise money and what is does to people. I despise that we live in a society where you can’t live unless you have an increasingly steady supply of money coming in for most of your life. I understand that money is an integral part of our society as it is but I despise that people put money above other people. The fact is, people in power perpetuate this horrible economic state for their own benefit and it’s legal because they’re the ones who make the rules, the rest of us have to live by them or else we have nothing. It has honestly hindered my motivation to do anything. I find myself thinking about the state of everything all the time but I feel completely helpless to do anything about it. When I bring it up to people around me, the reaction tends to be “there’s nothing we can do about it” and I just hate that. I don’t want to be a part of it but I am, we all are unfortunately. I wish there was something I could directly do to make change happen but I guess there’s not much one person can do about it. I really would like to try. Sorry for the rant, but again thank you for talking about this. I hope more people start talking about it because I know we all see it. It’s just easier to ignore and keep doing what we’re doing.

It’s possible I’m in the total minority, but I never place ANY expectations on content creators to properly vet sponsorships. Maybe they have, maybe they haven’t. Maybe they love the product, maybe they’ve never even tried it. It makes no difference to me, and I always assume that they’ve partnered with companies who have products that their audience may enjoy. It’s MY job to vet the product before purchasing b. It takes one single google search to look up reviews. Just my (less than) 2 cents! 🤪

I understand what you are saying regarding it is my responsibility. At the same time where I live there aren't ads for prescriptions on TV, cold and flu tablets can only say that they will ease symptoms etc. What limits are there placed in the online sphere regarding truth in advertising. Also these days with people blindly believing information if it is said by the political side that they follow (or a specific subgroup) when/where are people learning these critical thinking skills needed to make that informed decision.

    • @RogueError617

@@amandamandamands not only that, but Google 'on its own' can't even be trusted to show accurate reviews, due to slimy marketing tactics such as SCO optimization and fake bot reviews of products so there are extra layers of research you also have to do on top of it. @RogueError617 Před 5 měsíci +1

Heh I won hundred percent agree with you on that. in fact, you would think this would be obvious to everyone, right? If you're naturally a very skeptical person it's much easier for us to know when we are being sold bullshit but the average 'consumer' (barf) is not like this, and decades upon decades of research into marketing and manipulation is having its intended effect. The marketing and advertisement industry is a chimera of epic proportions. I think it should be mandatory for kids to be taught critical thinking skills and media literacy at an early age so they can learn how to make more informed choices.

I’ve slowly begun to gain an audience for the first time and although it’s small and niche it’s been something I’ve tried to become conscious of. Like social media used to be screaming into a void, which it still can be, but people online and genuinely real people. It’s easy to forget that the whoever you’re interacting with is a genuine human too, in the sense that we are all so much more than what we just present on social media, we have individual feelings and wants and needs, idk that’s only became more clearer in being able to talk to so many different kinds of people who feel a safe connection with you, just by connecting through some niche interest that the internet has been able to provide. Lots to think about

I work in marketing, and booking influencer campaigns is part of the job. I used to work for a brand that would have hugely benefitted from being advertised on family channels, and I've always had the ick about the idea, so I never did. Something about the way these kids were on the job in their day to day life wasn't sitting right with me. Your entire series confirmed that intuition, and I'm really, really glad that I had enough decision autonomy in that company to be able to draw that line. In larger companies, your individual ethics unfortunately are not enough... unless there is a significant PR/public opinion risk associated with doing the wrong thing. This is where your work is doubly important: you're building up that public awareness that can eventually amount to enough pressure on brands. As you're saying, we're all trying to do our best in a broken system. And sometimes we're working together in ways we wouldn't have imagined. Thank you!

I know they can’t live just from the ad revenue and it’s hypocritical to get mad, It would be as if my boss wanted me to code for free. I have youtube premium because I don’t like the ads in between videos, so the only stuff I see is the sponsorship inside a video.
Regarding buying the stuff promoted, I got interested ONCE, cause it was a channel about music and the sponsor was like a mini studio to record your music, which was really cool. I didn’t do it cause I’m about to buy my own apartment so I need any penny available, but I’ll do it in the future.

I actually do not mind if people I watch on here have sponsors/sponsored ads, especially if the thing goes with their lifestyle/how they live their life and is authentic seeming. Like there's a vanlife dude I watch and Ryobi saw his videos and loved what he was doing and saw he needed tools, so they sent them to him. I was stoked for him. and then another family I watch got sponsored by the people who ran their website, and also Lego sent them some kits after someone from there saw them building. They don't sit there shilling them like the Truman Show, so I'm okay with it. You can tell when people are just shilling things to make money. and that's fine, as long as they are honest about it.

I am really tired of how you can't watch anything no matter what, it's interrupted by a product sale in the middle of your video. while i understand it, it still is so annoying. one day movies will be interrupted by a commercial 😄 it's just too much. and then now, most yotubers have another website, either OF or Patreons. and we as consumers willingly pay, to watch - usually it's watching someone watching something else - so you can FEEL like you aware watching it together with a "friend" ... but you are just watching someone else - and getting to know them, but they don't even know your face, yet you are personally paying their rent. like what? it's just such a weird world we live in when you think about what it really is.
and as the person having the patreon, you can literally LIVE by having a patreon. do you really feel fulfilled by just watching movies, and having people watch yo udo that? you're not getting up and being active. you are just sitting there on your bum. must not be fulfilling. which just leads to more of this societal problem that we are all just becoming lazy drones. why go out and get friends? watch them instead. why have a relationship? have a "relationship" to the OF person you are subscribed to.
    it makes me sad.

I think standards should differ from person to person based on their status, following and power. I do expect someone who can afford to say no, to be conscious about what they are advertising or someone who brands themself a certain way. And of course there a probably company’s that no one should really feel comfortable about promoting. But I don’t sweat small creators just trying to make a living..

I love the last half of this video, really insightful. I think it depends on a number of factors such as the type of content they make and who their audience is. Example: An adult who generates younger audience I'd say should be more responsible with their content. It's really no different than behaving/being a role model around children.
What is your stance on this? What if we reframe this to mindfulness? How to present a more mindful approach to social media and content creating. 99% of the time we're not mindful of what we do online.
I personally think it's their choice in what they do with their page and with that said I think it's also important to stay informed by doing our own research and stay self-reliant with the knowledge/expectation that influencers will endorse products to make money. But when we're talking about a younger audience now that's a different story. A reference point and/or some kind of marketing course to give them a foundation to start off with this way they're armed with knowledge or some kind of age restriction in place for sponsored content (that also impacts companies reaching out to them).
Is it me or are ads a new addition to your series?

Do influencers use Patreon as a way to allow them to be more selective of sponsors?
I heard an influencer say it matters if you skip the commercials. They don't get the same benefits, so I let the commercial play and take care of a chore, so the influencer gets paid, but I don't have to watch.

    • @TheRealAlysonStoner
      @TheRealAlysonStoner  Před 7 měsíci +2

I appreciate this question. I’m sure different influencers have different reasons for starting Patreon, but I know several are trying to use it as a strategic way to be more selective with sponsorships, yes. (..Or to have “consistent” income.) However, we as consumers have been trained to get content for free, so it’s hard to get people to pay for their regular media subscriptions AND yours on top of it (since the influencer’s content typically doesn’t “compare” to the breadth of options you get on Netflix, etc). //// It is true that lower viewership on sponsored content ends up working against the influencer. It’s sort of like the brand looks at you and says, “You failed the test. No one bought our product. We won’t work with you again.” (..Even though we’ve named that hardly anyone wants to watch ads no matter how compelling they are..) And then the “bad data analytics” from your post makes the next company question your hireability. So, it becomes an interesting double-edged sword to have the fortunate opportunity of a brand deal to help sustain yourself, yet potentially negative consequences (from your audience AND the company) on the other side… // As we said, most people don’t graciously sit through ads like you (thank you.. I do the same for my creator friends for this reason, but still feel like my gesture is so small compared to the larger issue). It’s ironic how our society consumes and demands so much (free) media, yet 98% of actors/creators can’t earn a livable wage from it alone and have to have several other jobs. I realize this isn’t only happening for actors. So, I feel an ache about the reality that more and more people are maintaining 2, 3, 4 jobs just to make ends meet.

Hello Alyson! To answer your question regarding “influencer should be responsible for what they promote?”
My honest thought is that yes an no. I feel the answer to that question has such a gray area where I feel both the people offering the deal and the influencer are responsible but more of the company who owns the product.
Like you mentioned there isn’t a lot of time for them to do their research, but I guess one can use their judgment. I’m not an influencer to know the pressure they go through.

    • @Evolutioninthestars
      @Evolutioninthestars Před 7 měsíci +1

To add to your comment. I think it's important for us to use discernment rather than rely on influencers to do the research and ensure the product is authentic or "on par." If they choose to promote a product without research then that's their choice to make. I always rely on myself to do my own research with the expectation that many of them will likely endorse a product to make money, however, I can't say the same for young people since that's an entirely different category. Is the lack of time a means to "pressure" influencers into saying yes similar to marketing tactics? The less time you are given to make a decision the more you are likely to say yes. Maybe an online marketing course for young influencers or a reference point will make a difference? That way everyone is informed and "armed with knowledge."

Something I do is click on a video and if I like the person or the message of it but I don't want to watch it at the moment I slide the time to the end so that person gets a time stamp that shows up in their statistics. I don't know if that is helpful in boosting the video but I think I heard that you guys can see how long a video is watched and it affects the content boost from CZcams. I also do this on TikTok too. 💚

*i kno ur in the comments a lot, but im a 25yo man, i dont expect u to read this i just wanted to get my thoughts out. ill keep watching ur series regardless im just beepotalkin down here*
i really appreciated the start of this series but... i feel like as it goes on, all these topics have gotten really surface level, and are less a critique about the effect hollywood has on child actors/influencers and is more just... really basic explanations about these related things?
there obviously is a balance between how the vocal minority of the internet reacts to poor sponsors and an influencers own accountability for the sponsors that they take- i think any level headed netizen is consistently at odds with the vocal minority and i know i am personally upset when a content creator is forced to bend to unrealistic standards because of them, rather than be allowed to stand their ground and be human like they usually are. At least for me... cc's need to make money. i am very poor- i dont have 12$ to spend at a movie theater once a month, let alone 50$ every month to support every patreon i wish i could. i am happy to see sponsored content, because i kno that's a big business giving my artists/video essayists/influencers the money that i don't have so they can keep doing what i love from them. (plus if getting 20% off of dove soap i already had on my shopping list supports the cc i will be happy to use the link instead of waiting for my errand run B) )
i have seen the internet get riled up over a particularly bad brand deal, and i have seen the other end where a brand disavows their work with a specific influencer after learning of their past behaviors. but if you already have a big enough following to get a sponsor... I feel like you probably have a dedicated fanbase to not lose too much from a controversial sponsor. Either way, the fear of being canceled is a real one I've seen different cc's handle in different ways, and getting a broader recognition from a sponsor is a very big trigger for these anxieties (the wider internet will often act different than an individuals own fanbase- theyre strangers. they dont kno the social mores created within a dedicated audience)
i just personally feel like the much deeper conversation around sponsors has much less to do with,, the fact that they exist,,. and, how and why they work, and much MORE to do with the individual communities around each influencer, how they create expectations for their sponsored content (because yes, influencers with a dedicated community HAVE control over their community and what they say is routinely proven to matter inside each community), how they+their community react to these things, and how they handle a vocal minority outburst for controversial sponsors+how that can change their community reactions going forward.
maybe im the minority here because im an adult and kno that when someone says "thanks to our sponsor today, raid shadow legends" that they dont give a shit about raid shadow legends (because no one does,,) they're just getting their paycheck. i could be off here, who knows, i just feel like this was surface level when theres a lot of deep, tricky social aspects to pick apart especially when sponsors can sometimes deal directly with pitting an influencers own dedicated community against a broader internet's opinions. ive seen adults make a mess of this and spoil their community because they care too much about the vocal minority- i cant imagine what itd be like to be a kid in the middle of this :(

Ads feel like unrelated filler content. Like an obligation.
It would be like if a traditional news show had to set aside 5 minutes to talk about a specific type of tree, and they do this every show
Regardless of how seem less the transition or how funny the ad, it’s still not very relevant to how I’m currently viewing and enjoying my media.
It becomes wastage, and will be avoided even if I like the creator
It’s just feels like useless filler media
Can they make it more relevant? Can the creator be more convincing? Sure. But if they do too good of a job then they’re probably being underpaid by the sponsor, or that sponsor will go away wanting more from other creators and cause pressure for mor of these spots that it dilutes the relatability

Mostly I hate the sponsored segments, and usually I skip right on over it ESPECIALLY if it's a sponsor that has been all over the place already, or if the product is just not relevant to me at all. Sometimes I give it a moment just to see what it is. But no, I have never bought anything because of a sponsored segment in a video.
To be honest I often feel like the more advertisement, the more overpriced (or maybe even scamy) the product probably is. Because if you put that much money in to advertisement... well the money has to come from somewhere!
That said, it's not that I don't understand why people do it! Yeah, if you can make a living doing what you love if only you promote some products (that hopefully you have actually tried, researched and loved yourself!), then I guess why not. But it IS annoying! 😉

Interesting questions raised. While I have instinctive answers to some and some of those answers I believe are based on being the kindest I can be to people and the planet (guided by all the learning I'v done through the years, which will always be flawed and incomplete) I believe, in having the discussion and finding make-do answers, one of the biggest things to keep in mind (always?) is empathy, on all fronts to all facets, circumstances, people & other 'ingredients' involved, for as much as it keeps you (and others) mentally able to keep going and exist. I hope that came out as kind and unproblematic (maybe useful?) as possible. x

I really appreciate that these videos exist and that they are so thoughtfully created. If I may ask, though, could you maybe be just as thoughtful and careful about your subtitles? Sometimes they're cutting apart the sentences in ways they shouldn't be or they're segmented really oddly, leaving really really short subtitles. I know it's a detail to the production but it would mean a lot for people who actually use them to be able to read them comfortably.

Another great presentation Ms. Stoner. It's not easy out here for real...making a living as a social media "influencer" can be so tricky. Such an approach to social media isn't for everyone...well not for me at least. I'm not saying that anything is necessarily wrong with being an "influencer," but for me, I would not want to be in a position where I have to compromise my values to survive (Romans 6:16). Even worse than that, I would not want to be forced to lead any little lambs astray by promoting things to them which are demonstrably bad for them (whether or not they're aware that it's bad!). I just can't do it...I don't know that I have any practical skill to share which can draw a mega following and I'm not an entertainer by any stretch. I soberly consider my limitations... I believe if you can't pull off either of those, then sticking to building up special interest communities, with a clear conscience, like Jidion/Gideon for example, and being grateful for whatever big or small remuneration MIGHT come (1Timothy 6:6-10) and of course keeping a "day job" (to guard against desperation) , will yield more peace of mind for those in the same boat as me. Less persons feeling forced to promote rubbish to the public from those corporations that are unscrupulous MAY turn the tide the right direction ( who knows??) . I said all that to say that my stance is 'yes"...as an influencer, especially with an enormous following, you do indeed have some responsibility for the direction you steer your ship and where you may take those on board...just my opinion.

I think that influencers should not be able to sign contract without a team of lawyers or agents. And that they should have some kind of accountability for the product they push forward, since they 'influence' people to buy they also should have the responsibility if something is not good or harmful to people/animals. I also think that the system is inherently wrong, there's no way one could still have some kind of ethical behaviour by selling products to people, products that are most of times simply unnecessary or in worst cases directly harmful for everyone, including the planet. We should revolutionise the capitalistic system, tearing it down.

If I have extra money to spend (which is rare) I’ll stop and listen to a #sponsored ad - especially if it’s one of my favorite creators.
However - I am a shopaholic and struggle with impulse control, so usually I skip past anything that is trying to get me to buy stuff. Tiktok shop has made it kind of easy to decipher between real content and ad content because the little bar with the orange shopping cart tells me that this video is about a product that I probably will want.
It just sucks that every 3 videos I’m skipping because it’s someone trying to sell me something. I miss going to TikTok and Instagram to view content, not to buy stuff. I’m all for well made and thought out sponsored posts, (my fave creators gotta make a living) but TikTok shop is going to be the downfall of how popular TikTok currently is.
