You can tell this was made in 1994 cause it has the most 1994 character a fighting game could ever reference: an ice-skater a la Tonya Harding.

I think she’s referencing both skaters. She looks more like Kerrigan but Harding would be the fighter.
The digital eye coloration makes the characters look utterly unhinged.
Funnily enough, since they're all supposed to be mind-controlled, it kind of... fits?

Kinda makes sense given the lore is that they're under the influence of Koldan, and that tattooed lady is suppose to be "hijacking" their will to fight the others in order to get to Koldan.

Tattoo Assassins actually not being intended as a parody of MK was the biggest plot twist to me. It just reeks of intentional parody, right down to using pinball designers to make the game since Ed Boon worked on Williams/Bally tables.
We really need to take a moment to give flowers to these devs, though, just for how awful the conditions were and how well they did despite that.
They were *pinball* designers making their very first game, that they never wanted to make, in the era before CZcams, Discord, Reddit, Unity, or Unreal. The fact that these dudes cracked open paper textbooks to learn to code in Assembly or some other mind-breaking early language, then put together something that worked at all, under unrelenting crunch, in just 7 months, warrants way more than a $25,000 bonus.
All of the games featured in The Worst Fighting Game intro have now been covered on the show...

How could I forget the game that gave the world flaming flatulence Fatalities before Mortal Kombat did?
I appreciate that Matt acknowledges that it took THIS long for Tattoo assassins to be brought onto the WFG stage, despite how long its deadly allure has been foreshadowed in the intro.
I mean, it wasnt officially released and he is mainly focused on games with official releases.

My exact thought bro.
I was playing the trivia board game "Wits & Wagers" and a question came up where we had to guess the year when Tonya Harding sabotaged the National Figure Skating Championships against Nancy Kerrigan. I had to think to myself "when did Mortal Kombat come out? When did the terrible rip-offs come out? Because I remember that killer ice skater from Tattoo Assassins!". But I guessed 1995 and missed it, because it's closest without going over.
This was the only fighting game brave enough to feature a figure skater as a fighter. Therefore, it is impossible for it to be the worst fighting game.
I brought this game as a mystery at my locals a couple months back. One of the Tekken players saw the name "Truck Davis" and locked in.
I kinda dig all the fighters having their own logos like WWF wrestlers in the late '80s and early '90s.

I think a lot of the feeling of parody can be attributed to how tired the devs were, like how good would it feel to make your boss suffer on a project you hated and required skills you dont have?
The selected one-button special mechanic makes sense to me as the creation of a team unfamiliar enough with fighting games that joystick moves are legitimate obstacle to doing moves but aren't confident enough to just remove joystick moves entirely
All the best "Worst Fighting game" episodes have intros that are nearly "What Happened??" intros
My theory is that the 2196 finisher number is counting each character's finishers on each character as a separate finisher, which brings the amount of finishers per characters to a more plausible average 27 per character, 11 if that counts bosses
Kind of. Other than the individual Fatalities, there is a pool of Generic Ones that every fighter have access (all those thar make objects fall in the opponent or transform them into something), and they counted them for every fighter. For example, the Burgertime one is one fatality that everyone can use, but for them, it was 13 different ones.
I think it might be another layer of mathematical gore where it counts the map you do it in
I love video games, but hate how fucking brutal the industry is to the people that make them. This game is bad, but the people who worked on it were set up for failure from the moment they started. It’s like playing corporate greed and stupidity in game form. Had they the time and resources to properly develop the game, maybe it would suck but it would be genuine and indicative of the people that worked on it and stand or fall on its own terms.
The worst part is that these stories NEVER end with your next generation defining classic. They end with broken games and fucked careers and the suits are just like WTF happun?

It's the worst isn't it? I've never worked 7 days a week all day (and probably night) like these guys, but I've had rough work schedules in a different industry and I vowed never again. A few years of overworking myself and I decided fuck the money fuck the career and legit chose to restart my life with a boring nothing job in a different state and I'm much much happier nowadays.
Matt this is my single favorite series on this whole platform ever; please never stop making these lol

@@JohnDoe-lb2hp Personally, I'd say it should count. The platforming is just an (albeit sizeable) portion of the game, everything else falls under that umbrella. Plus, the last episode looked more like a beat-em-up from the looks of it.

I dont't think it will be there. I mean, it's a completly mediocre fighting game, but it's not offensively bad like some of the games on this show (mostly) or a broken game. I think if the game didn't had the Justice League IP it would be remembered only like a 5\10 bland fighting game. I think having a JL IP makes people go even harsher on it.

But remember there's also a Genesis version that is substantially worse to the degree it's an actual contender for Worst Fighting Game. There's an old video here in CZcams by Team Best From Now that goes over just what a buggy, glitchy mess that version of the game is.
I remember first hearing of Tattoo Assassins via I-Mockery years ago... so many years ago.
Not-so-funtastic fact, as noted by that article: all the bosses are animated at twice the speed, which is why (among other things) Prizm practically blinks out of existence upon defeat.
that "tattoos" gimmick reminds me of an old comic book supervillain, "the tattooed man", who could makes his tattoos come to life...
his tattoos supposedly had "some sort of Yellow base", that made them a major problem for Green Lantern.

My university bowling alley was a test location for this. I was there the day they installed it, and watched a guy in a suit from Data East along with a tech trying it out. That was the only time I ever saw anyone playing it.

Oh man, Matt, I just remembered one that is not a 'traditional' fighting game, but might count for this series and I don't think you've done it: Robo Pit (PS1 and Saturn). It *is* kinda fun, especially once you get a good enough weapon arm, but if I remember right there is definitely enough jank to consider it here.
I think I know what the limited move thing is. Let's say... hypothetically, you're playing mortal kombat or street fighter. This programmable move button might be something like "Oh, you can make this Guile's Sonic Boom", or "Oh, you can make this scorpion's spear." - back then; a lot of people would have to teach eachother by word of mouth, so you'd have a limited amount of free uses of a move without needing to know it:
The more I hear about being a video game developer, the less I would ever want to do it. Avg less pay than non video game peers and crazy crunch times, all for the privilege of working on an IP or studio that's a "dream job".

I'm surprised this one is as full featured like that. Imagine this engine but over a competent design.
That single-button special move mechanic seems a lot like the designer's way of lowering the execution barrier rather than it being meant as a sort of resource for EX specials. Just put in a quarter to try the game but don't know any special moves? Pick one to use with a simple press of a button!

The funny thing is that, seemingly, there could still theoretically be an official release for Tattoo Assassins one day in the future. After Data East went bankrupt in the early 00s G-mode got the rights to most of Data East's catalog (minus some notable exceptions, like Windjammers), and at one point G-mode's website for what Data East games & IP the company owned did in fact list Tattoo Assassins!
All we need is a company brave enough to license Tattoo Assassins from G-mode... or maybe we'll get lucky & Hamster could give it an Arcade Archives release.

Speaking of Mortal Kombat ripoff, you gonna have to talk about that PC exclusive game made by an italian filmmaker : Death Cargo. So bad, not even the game installs and works properly
So I’ve got some form of interesting and useless info on this game, but I’m a huge fan of crappy films, and one being a movie called Deadly Prey. There’s an actor in that movie named William Zipp, and he is credited as the actor portraying Prism and Deke Kay which are the sub-bosses in this game.

I'd like to nominee the game Dragon Fury to be the next worst fighting game. They didn't even bother with special moves and call it a feature: "There are no complicated moves, ju, right into the game"

True story: I have played the Tattoo Assassins cabinet as I frequent the Galloping Ghost quite often. In fact this video inspired me to take a trip down there again very soon!
Seems like it had alot going for it conceptually. Would love to see a more refined take on the concept. The tatoo concept might lend itself a little more to parkour.

Billy is meant to be "Billy Jack," a character from a series of action films in the late 60s/early 70s

Jeans and jean jacket (with black shirt, but since everyone has to be shirtless I understand that.) were Billy Jack's signature look. I owned four pairs of Billy Jack kicking jeans for about 20 years (they were pretty good quality for 25 bucks back in 1997).
