    Had their languages not been beaten out of them by over zealous teachers in Indians schools, we might still have this wonderful part of Indigenous culture. I am making an effort to cross-train between Shawnee, Cherokee and Miami. It's not easy when you have no one to bounce words off of. And, for all intents and purposes, yes, Mr. Bruchac is Native. He probably does have white bloodlines too, but, a relative of his, Margaret Bruchac wrote a book called 1620: The First Thanksgiving. Some commenters need to be careful who THEY declare as Indian and non-Indian, unless/until you've seen that person's family tree. You boys/girls may have other racial bloodlines that you're not aware of.

      Monty Martin, I have their family Tree, and the Bowman genetic results, both Y-DNA and atDNA. No Abenaki there in the Bowman's or any other familial ancestry that Joe, Marge or Jesse come from. Bruchac is not native. He has 3 ancestral lines that only are in the 1600's ONLY. No other native interactions since then. Until the 1970's ... So please spare us your concocted naive beliefs and faulty perception that Mr. Bruchac is Native. Because using your "logic" if I know German stories and speak German, that must mean I am German because I got a Membership Card in the Minnesota Polka Club in 1978.

    I would like to see more natives and non-natives learn native languages. For example, Ojibwe, Cree, Cherokee, Blackfoot, or Lakota which have many many speakers. Aŋpétu kiŋ lé taŋyáŋ máni yo. (May you walk well today- Lakota)
    Aŋpétu- day, kiŋ- the, lé- this, taŋyáŋ-well, máni-to walk, yo-marks a command spoken by men. wo-would be used by women instead of yo.

      Yes I speak a bit of Lakota in as well as mohegan/Western Abenaki.
      My native name is Wahsus Tah which in mohegan/abenaji translates as Bear Heart.
      I am not conversational in either and it's very hard to be as finding those around you to have a conversation with you are also fluent in a native tongue is nearly impossible. I'm also slowly learning how to speak Hindi which has been great fun

    Actually, Mr. Bruchac does have Abenaki ancestry (as well as other Northeast tribal affiliations) and is one of perhaps less than ten people alive who speak the language. He learned it from, amongst others, a few of the remaining people who grew up speaking it as their fist language. Definitely not "white boy teaching an Indian how to speak his own language", more like native speaker teaching a non-native speaker.

      @douglaslloydbuchholz Před 5 lety

      No, Mr. Bruchac DOES NOT HAVE ABENAKI Ancestry Kavik v.d. Hexenholtz. You are not speaking the truth as to Mr. Bruchac's ancestry.

    Abenak not wompanoag this film is a joke should have allowed the Wampanoag be involved so that the film could be accurate again like Marlon Brando says hollywood Indians portrayal

    • @shadowsinmymind9
      @shadowsinmymind9 Před 6 lety

      +Andrew Shepard but there is some people who speak. they have brought most of the language back and are teaching it to the Wampanoags that live in Mashpee, and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. They could of taught them the language just like they are currently doing with the natives

    • @Ya-kz7lg
      @Ya-kz7lg Před 6 lety +2

      shadowsinmymind9 but the thing is, only some of the peoples portrayed in this film are Wampanoag. Some are Massachusett, some are abenaki, etc.

    • @shadowsinmymind9
      @shadowsinmymind9 Před 6 lety +2

      +Andrew Shepard eh, its not a big deal. they at least spoke an Algonquian language and Abnaki is similar to Wampanoag language. and the Wampanoag language is not 100% back. there are still many words that were lost so they have to borrow some words from neighboring tribes/ nations.

    • @douglaslloydbuchholz
