Part of the parapet of the world famous Pont Des Arts bridge in Paris has collapsed under the weight of the growing number of locks that had been attached. Couples write their initials on the so-called 'lovelocks', and attach them to the bridge as a sign of their love.

I think they should do a statue but something more original than a big heart, for Paris i think that might be a bit unoriginal and dull, they could make something much more beautiful.

Please, please, please, Ville de Paris, just cut of the d*mn locks and preserve your gorgeous historic architecture. I'm a romantic person as much as the next person, but not if it's at the cost of history, or safety, or of not being able to get over ones personal ego just to have a piece of junk on a famous bridge.
I agree! The bridge really looks awful. I went to Paris recently and I noticed the locks have even begun to spread up the lamp posts; lamp posts that have beautiful and intricate carvings on them! Also, even a statue on the Alexandre III bridge in Paris had locks secured to it. Because of this tradition first time visitors to Paris will not be able to appreciate the old architecture of the city. This is also the case in Venice!

I realize that this is a tradition, but this doesn't seem environmentally friendly: This seems like a big waste of metal (a non-renewable resource), and simply throwing the keys into the river like that could contaminate the water.

People put those locks there because they think its romantic how it represents their bond.
If the idea of that gets ruined by something that tells them that its bad for their relationship it might get less beautiful to hang the lock there.
(People would probably ignore it and try to tell themselves that what they want to believe is true, like they often do)

the only idea that i think is daft is that they can't make a railing strong enough to hold 500 pounds of locks. i have seen people heavier than that , what if they walked into the railing and it snapped

It may have started off as a cute custom but it just got to be tacky. They should have started removing the locks once they started to clutter up the bridge. They could probably pay the people who did it with the money from the scrap metal.
