#### Peripheral Retinal Degenerations: What are they?
Peripheral retinal degenerations are areas of thinning in the retina, usually located at the edges of the back of the eye. These thinning areas can take various forms, such as lattice degeneration or snail track degeneration. These conditions are more common in patients with high myopia, especially above six degrees.
Some of these degenerations increase the risk of retinal detachment. In certain cases, treatment with laser photocoagulation is necessary to strengthen these fragile areas.
#### Cataract and Peripheral Degenerations: Is There a Risk?
A cataract is an opacity in the lens of the eye that can cause blurred vision. Cataract surgery involves removing the opaque lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. In patients with peripheral retinal degenerations, cataract surgery can be more complex due to the increased risk of retinal detachment.
Although cataract surgery itself does not cause retinal detachment, patients who have had this surgery have a slightly higher risk of detachment compared to those who have not had the surgery. This is mainly due to the possible detachment of the vitreous - a jelly inside the eye that can come loose and pull on the retina, especially where there is degeneration.
#### Precautions Before Cataract Surgery
For patients with peripheral degenerations, it is prudent to consider laser photocoagulation before cataract surgery. This procedure can strengthen fragile areas and prevent possible complications. However, the decision to perform the laser should be discussed carefully between the ophthalmologist and the patient, taking into account factors such as a family history of retinal detachment and the presence of high myopia.
#### Post-surgery follow-up
After cataract surgery, close follow-up is essential to monitor any symptoms of retinal detachment, such as flashes of light (photopsias) or floaters. In the event of any symptoms, the patient should immediately go to the ophthalmologist.
#### Conclusion
There is no absolute contraindication to cataract surgery in patients with peripheral retinal degeneration. However, prophylaxis with laser photocoagulation and careful monitoring are essential to minimize risks and ensure eye health.

Dr. eu estou desesperado, pois estou, desde o último dia 18, com as chamadas moscas volantes e flashs tapando completamente o meu olho direito. Sou tão nervoso que não suporto isso bloqueando a minha visão que penso que ninguém vai me curar e vou acabar entrando em depressão profunda.
Fui ao oftalmologista e através de exames ficou constatado que houve hemorragia vítrea secundária. Não sei p que significa esse termo técnico. Então foi feito em mim uma fotocoagulação à leiser e a médica vai me observar por dez dias para ver se o bloqueio da minha visão saia. Mas hoje já dia 25/05/24 e nada de melhora. A cada dia que passa as manchas ficam escuras no meu olho direito.
Estou muito triste por isso.
Vou ser curado?
