    How I think of it (aided with this wonderful discussion) - petals on a wet bough are translucent, that is to say we can see the black bough through the wet petals. Similar to the crowd being a permanent background which we see through the apparitions of the fast moving faces.

    Trains moving so fast, image diminished, an appration passing as I wait; the crowd within, indistinct faces on dark train zooming past.
