You didin't explained AT ALL how it works. You just mentioned why and when they are used.

But as a private person:
How can I apply this in real life?
When I am abroad I cannot go to a store & say:
I want to pay in this and that currency.
Then you have to pay in the currency from the actual country.
🤷🏻‍♂️
The same with your bank:
There mostly only is the possibility to chose from €, USD & the currency the bank is from.
Then I receive monthly payments in my home currency (CHF in my case) & then the bank converts and holds the amount in the currency the bank is from. (Czech Republic in my case)
& when you want to leave out cash then you pay a fee abroad. (except you are member of a bank like DKB or so where you have this option covered)

you wouldn't hedge changing physical currency.. ; you'd use a platform/account.
