Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagoner. She was the female singer on his weekly show in the 1960’s. When she told Porter she was leaving his show Porter was so mad at her. He told her you are killing your career by leaving. She stormed out after a screaming match between the two. She came back the next day and told Porter “ you sit your ass down and just listen” . After she sang this song to him he told Dolly “ I will let you go BUT, I have to be the producer on that song.
She also took care of him and his family when he got sick and paid for all of his funeral expenses.
It has been said that Whitney sang her version to the world, but Dolly sings to you. Both great, but very different.

Dolly Parton recalled that Elvis Presley “loved the song” and had crafted his own take on it. She was so ecstatic about the idea that she initially agreed to watch Elvis Presley as he laid down the track. However, one last-moment snag forced her to call off the whole project.

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee. She is a singer, songwriter, musician, actress, philanthropist and businesswoman, known primarily for her decades-long career in country music. Her musical influences include: Rose Maddox, Molly O'Day, Roy Acuff, Kitty Wells, George Jones, Brenda Lee and Patsy Cline. She began performing as a child, singing on local radio and television programs in the East Tennessee area. By the age of ten, she was appearing on The Cas Walker Show on both WIVK Radio and WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee. At 13, she was recording music like the single: "Puppy Love", on a small Louisiana record label called Goldband Records. She appeared at the Grand Ole Opry, where she first met Johnny Cash, who encouraged her to follow her own instincts regarding her music career.
After graduating from Sevier County High School in 1964, Dolly Parton moved to Nashville, Tennessee the next day. Her initial success came as a songwriter, having signed with Combine Publishing shortly after her arrival in Nashville. Dolly wrote the song in 1973, it was released and was a number one hit in 1974. It was used in the movie in 1982 and went to number one on the country charts again. She wrote this song as a good bye song when she wanted to leave the Porter Wagoner Show after her contract was up. It was her first big break. Whitney did her pop cover and then Dolly charted it a third time this time as duet with Vince Gill in 1995.

This is the minority opinion, but I always thought Whitney Houston's version of this song was terrible. The arrangement and production of Whitney's version is over done and she overpowers what is suppose to be a wistful love song about growing apart. I don't deny Whitney Houston was a talented singer and performer.....but she wasn't Dolly Parton.

Dolly wrote and recorded this song in 1973, when Whitney was still a child. Whitney did not even want to sing it because it was a country song. Dolly does not get the credit she deserves for this, but it is her song.
