  • Richard Lloyd made his name as the guitarist for the underground rock band 'Television'. Having joined the band (Richard Hell - Bass, Vocals, Tom Verlaine - Guitar, Vocals, Billy Ficca - Drums) in 1973, he and Television manager Terry Ork discovered CBGB the following year - the club out of which American Punk music developed. Signed to Elektra in 1977, the band recorded two seminal albums - 'Marquee Moon' and 'Adventure', and despite the stature of these works now, at the time they failed to break Television into the big time, and they disbanded in 1978.
In this interview Lloyd discusses the New York underground scene in the 1970s, Andy Warhol, CBGB and the host of acts who emerged there (including The Ramones), his time in Television and the UK Punk scene they inspired.

Where do you detect any envy? I don’t see it. Are you not allowed to criticize anyone without it being “jealousy”? Tom definitely comes across as a defective personality and his talent was always a minor one compared to say a Keith Richards or bob dylan.

great band. Sounds like they got along like a house on fire. Richard seem overly worried his 'contribution' pales in comparison to Tom's. Why not just accept it ?

Lloyd got ripped off. Verlaine took too much credit for that bands success. Lloyd was a huge part of the soundscape of Television. They would not be remembered w/o his contributions.

+Donna Thomas He absolutely did. But Lloyd's heroin usage didn't help matters either.

@@donnathomas1227 Lloyd’s guitar part on Venus alone should stop any rumors that he didn’t contribute as much. Who else could’ve come up with that? Imagine that song or Marquee Moon period without Lloyd. I love Verlaine but he seemed like an asshole

Because it doesn’t “pale in comparison” Richard was an essential part of the band and Tom wouldn’t give him songwriting credits for, get this, writing songs. If Richard wasn’t there television would be a totally different band. Tom is a minor talent and a big narcissist. Bands much better than television don’t treat each other like shit.
