  • @madezio2
    @madezio2 Před 2 lety +133

    I do think that Katia deserves to be in the A* tier. When you trade with Franko, you sell your items for more than you buy them (as long as you don't put the same item in both sides), so by reverse trading you can get almost everything from Franko for free every day he comes. And that allows you to get a lot of free stuff without risking your like or spending a night somewere.

      Prices of items fluctuate a lot. Price of wood gets very high during cold weather for instance. Price of moonshine can drop by more than half during the game. And once the smuggler don't come too often because of weather or comes with pretty useless items, Katia is pretty much useless. You simply can't rely on trade alone. Marin is a very good character if you want to trade too cause he can make some good weapons that can trade for a ton of other items even without Katia. Every trader wants weapons and tools in the game. If you can raid some military or bandit locations, you get a ton of weapon parts. Marin can make a lot of weapons for trading.

    I guess it depends on how experienced one is at the game. Like, Roman can be a pain in the ass for the unexperienced player, beating Bruno to a pulp every night. But if you kill just the baddies and give him cigarettes, you have a god tier fighter unlocking the juiciest loot spots one night and guarding the shelter alone during a crime spree like a boss. Katia is another borderline S tier character, you get incredible returns on her bonus early, mid and lategame. Emilia on the other hand... C at best, she's slow and a terrible, terrible guard. Plus, I tend to shy away from atrocities and stealing if I can, so I can't really use her bonus

    My experience with Bruno's mood stability and morality is somewhat different... it may be affected by who else is around, actually.
    On my first run together with Katia and Pavle, he would openly moan about it all the time if anyone stole anything and he was always the first to get sad/angry/sick when I wasn't able to feed the gang every day. When I had cigarettes but no food, I'd get a message that Bruno is smoking way too much and always arguing with everyone.
    During the second run with Roman and Arica, he didn't give a rat's behind if Arica stole anything ("We can cry about stealing once this war is over"), she would actually be way more broken up about stealing from certain people (the traders in the hotel). When I decided to ration food, though, I still had to make sure to keep Bruno well fed and bathing in cigarettes, because he was quick to get sad for no reason (Arica wasn't stealing anything then, home was kept warm and also safe with Roman on guard). Arica and Roman are tough, I could feed them every two or three days, and nothing bad would happen, but my experience with Bruno in both runs was that he was a delicate flower with a bad temper (but very much worth keeping around).
    But I just find it really interesting that being around the two hardasses that Arica and Roman are might actually affect his morality.

    Decent tier list and presentation, informative and concise. I'd like to offer my alternative list for those interested and compare & contrast playstyles.
    The List:
    A+ "Win-Condition" [those that are helpful no matter what the scenario, and require the least effort to make the most of]
    - Boris: Highest health, can survive sniper encounters and most head-to-head engagements, has the highest # of inventory slots, is a very forgiving scavenger (i.e ill-equipment or flawed strategy doesn't hamper him too much unless his speed is concerned). If handled with care, his morale can be kept relatively high.
    - Bruno: Less materials required for food, meds, and alcohol (can help immensely with trading and keeping survivors well-fed, thereby contributing to morale), is not affected much by bad things. He should preferably be kept inside the shelter at night and can be used to assist meighbours (assuming you do not have extremely starving survivors).
    - Roman: High health, amazing combat ability, amazing guard that negates most shelter defense upgrades (saves wood in particular). While resistant to depression, he can still be brought down by excessive killing & stealing (especially when civilians are concerned) and can become volatile, and since he has a small # of inventory slots, he should secure a hostile area so that a) he can visit the area again or b) allow a better equipped scavenger to go there.
    A "Surviving Made Easy" [those who are helpful in all scenarios, but have a few things to look out for to make the most out of them]
    - Katia: Trading queen, above-average scavenger, below-average combatant, and is quite adaptable in most non-violent scenarios. She should be approached with care & compassion, and she may not be able to do much with her trading if she cannot find enough valuable items to trade for necessities. However, her profitable trade snowballs into a massive economy if you play your cards right.
    - Marko: The best all-rounder and the most adaptable survivor in the game. The second (or first, depending on your playstyle) scavenger in the game. Decent combat abilities, decent guard, a forgiving scavenger, and has no addictions. Though he's a worse combatant than Roman or Boris (and thus should be careful in head-to-head engagements), he can combine the two as he has Roman's speed and Boris's inventory slots. Overall, you can't go wrong with him.
    - Marin: Biggest con is the game starts at winter in all main scenarios, but he negates its effect by making the most with limited resources. He also allows for fast upgrades, and (like Bruno) is best kept indoors. [his placement may be switched with Bruno, but since Bruno's trait is more suitable for better trading and is more varied, plus the obligatory winter with Marin, I ranked him here]
    B "Talented Survivalists" [those who need some specific adjustments or require specialized scenarios to really shine]
    - Arica: Great combatant second only to Roman, easy to please and hard to hurt, and is the stealthiest scavenger. However, her stealth may be counter-productive in killing hostiles as she cannot lure in with sound as easily as others can. She's also only average in her inventory slots. Still, she can boost morale by keeping hers mostly high, and she can hold her own in head-to-head engagements or break them off and disappear without a trace.
    - Pavle: Sonic the Hedgehog with no addictions. His speed allows him to get in & out quickly, to hide from his pursuers for stealth takedowns, and to operate as efficiently as other scavengers would be even when he's wounded. His combative and guarding prowess are similar to Marko, but he has less inventory slots and his trait shines primarily when he's in danger (something to avoid in the first place, so his trait may be negated by careful planning). He can also serve as a great scout for a scavenger who is better than him (i.e Marko or Boris).
    - Zlata: The joy-bringer and the virtuoso. A bloodthirsty Roman would be kept in check with her, among any and all depressed/broken members. She's a below-average combatant and guard, and is fragile (she can be greatly affected by calamities, but conversely she can be easily uplifted by good deeds). She has above-average inventory slots, making her an servicable scavenger in safe/neutral areas. She shines the most when times are hard (something which one should try to avoid).
    - Emilia: She's like a watered-down Marko with added resiliency to bad changes in morale. She can be used to commit vile acts if need be, but there are those who can do that and more. She has no significant shortcoming, and her trait is much more self-serving (still, her keeping her morale high can affect other survivors) [Zlata and Emilia may swap places, but I value Zlata's better inventory slots and uplifting attitude more than Emilia's resiliency and slightly better combat prowess].
    C "Sure, Why Not, but Why Yes?" [those whose traits are mimally or situationally helpful, these survivors may be a burden if they are not used properly]
    - Anton: Rather slow, horrible # of inventory slots, below-average combatant and guard. His trait allows for raw meat to be collected more quickly, which may assist in you in the long run, but since setting up traps requires a little patience and resources, this may be a hinderance (this is evidenced by how much neighbouts help him and Cveta). However, in the big group scneario with Pavle, Cveta, and Zlata; he can provide a rather steady supply of food.
    F "You Will Either Die or Get Us all Killed, GTFO"
    - Cveta: NO insta-kill capabilities whatsover, useless trait that is slightly useful in The Little Ones, horrible # inventory slots, the worst combatant & guard in the game. She is mostly a mouth to feed or an extra set of hands to get jobs done while others are busy/resting. There's nothing she can do that substantially affects her or her group's survival [to be fair, she'd probably resemble a lot of people who are unaccustomed to wars].
    Thanks for reading if you've made it this far, and I hope you have found some value in this comment. Have a great day and good luck getting through this war of ours!

    Great list! I have just a few changes I'd make, but these are all my personal opinions:
    First and foremost, Bruno and Katia both deserve A*. Katia's ability is literally the most broken thing in the game, allowing her to buy basically anything she wants by trading her own things and then getting them back for less. Not to mention trading can come in clutch when no one is fit for scavenging and you're relying solely on that next visit from our lord and saviour Franko to make it through the next few days. Bruno’s lower resource requirement for meals is phenomenal in the early game and can single-handedly carry your team, but he is actually a lot more flexible than you may think as he also takes up less resources for making alcohol and meds, both valuable barter items. While these characters are both super strong on their own, they are unstoppable as a team, with Bruno making barter items with barely any resources and then Katia being able to sell them on for literally whatever you need. With these two on your team, you literally won't even have to scavenge after a couple of weeks, it really is that strong.
    Emilia doesn't deserve A. I would put her at B or even C, because the way I see it her talent is redundant when there are other characters with the exact same plus more. If I need a character who won't be phased by atrocities, why would I pick Emilia when I can pick Bruno, or Roman, two characters that are leagues stronger than her and have other important uses? The fact that she doesn't have any other strengths besides this doesn't endear her to me either.
    I would honestly put Pavle at an A. I get that he's a very all-round character and I do agree that Marko's big carrying capacity is slightly more useful...but only slightly. Because the thing is, Pavle is an underrated saviour during difficult times, Whereas injuries will reduce most characters to a hobble, invalidating them for any scavenging, Pavle can still move at a regular pace when wounded, meaning when the going gets rough he can still scavenge effectively, something that can save your ass if you're desperate for meds or other resources. This also makes risky scavenging missions and locations a little less risky, because if Pavle is your only good scavenger and comes out of it with an injury, you won't have to worry about him being OOA for days. Admittedly, he should still get his rest and this isn't something you want to push too far, but it's still incredibly helpful.
    I feel mean for this, but I would knock down Zlata to a C. Her boost can be helpful, yes...for other characters. The problem I have with Zlata though, despite my soft spot for her, is that she contradicts the kind of playstyle she encourages. Her morale boosting abilities incentivises players to commit more atrocities as it will be easier for your survivors to overcome the guilt caused by them with Zlata around...but Zlata herself reacts so strongly to these events that it is meaningless, and if you do commit multiple atrocities then she won't last long, and after she's gone neither will your other survivors. So in reality, the application of her strengths is limited, if you want to keep her around, that is.
    This is a sidenote and I wouldn't change her tier, but as a character I have a really strong soft spot for Cveta. She feels to me like the best example of the message that this game carries...that these 'survivors' are just ordinary people, with lives before the war. caught in a harrowing situation. Not all of them were made to endure this kind of situation, and not all of them have strengths that are easily applicable to surviving a war. Yet, everyone must be saved, because these are not facts and figures, strengths and weaknesses, we are dealing with. These are human lives in our hands.

    2 notes from me here. Zlata is the second best attacker after Roman, Boris has more health yes, but she is quicker, so maybe third best overall, see the wiki. I have used her a lot for combat myself and can confirm this, she is nowhere close to as bad as you make her out in the video, A tier character for me. Emilia being scored an A rank does not make any sense to me her combat proficiency and carrying capacity, combined with her being the worst guard by a lot, means that she needs to be either a third tier scavenger, or have someone else at home with her to guard the shelter. To me she is a C, B at best, I would only choose her over Anton or Cveta. Otherwise valid points, nice video

    It’d be cool if you added another reaction section for crisis states like hunger and illness, because from my experience characters like Bruno and Roman aren’t just resistant to depression altogether - they get sad more easily from their own suffering (Bruno for me became sad every time he reached the very hungry state) but then won’t care about atrocities committed against others unless you do loads of them. So mood stability isn’t really “high” per say, it’s just impacted differently than others.

    Katia is for me the only S tier character. Good all rounder with 12 cap, med speed etc. but her trade speciality is very good from early to late game.
    Boris is slow in doing tasks and clearing locations. He is prone to get sad very easly. Doesn't matter when he is good in fighting when he will be depressed after even when killing thugs or soldiers.
    Bruno discounts in cooking is very small when you have improved stove or vegies. And he is a smoker.
    Marin is very, very good in the early game but later his special is almost useless so I'm not sure about him being S or A.
    Emillia could be better. She can't guard your shelter and she has small backpack. However you can send her to do bad things like kill others or steal. B tier at most for me tho I like her.
    Roman, if you know the game you don't really need his fighting skills at all. His backpack is small and he is a smoker which is high penalty. He is Rambo at guarding but he can't really do it every night without beating other survivors. He can't console others but he play guitar only worse to Zlata. I don't know if he deserve to be A tier tho he is my fave survivor.

    Bruno is such a loaded character I'm surprised that he's not A*. The passive double dips into itself so whenever you cook and save 1 water it allows to use that excess into moonshine production which ofc gets reduced as well leading to a bit of a snowball effect. Selling that bottle at the military outpost for weapons to later sell them to best man, the wandering trader for more sugar and water. Bruno is a money printer.

    • @metalfish3384
      @metalfish3384 Před rokem +1

      TLDR; Respectfully, I disagree. While they are similar in many ways, Katia's trait is more adaptable to all scenarios and can help with morale among other aspects of managing your shelter/survivors. Zlata on the other hand is a specialist, she shines in certain scenarios that may actually hinder her as well.
      Longer explanation:
      I disagree because the difference between boosting morale and better trading outcome is mountainous.
      Sure, they both have 12 inventory slots, same combat abilities (you can check from Wiki), same mood swings, but...
      With her ability of acquiring %20 more items from a trader (and even more if she has items that the trader really desires/requires) Katia is actually worth 14/15 inventory slots and negates Franko's, the most reliable trader's, rather steep prices. She can be useful in any and all scenarios, and shines especially when gathering wood through trading with Franko.
      Zlata's ability can negate the need for cigarettes/coffee and maintain good morale even if things are going tough. However, her ability is useful if you're having a hard time balancing morale-food-heat-resources, yet experienced/well-prepared players can balance these well enough that Zlata's contributions are not essential to their survival. A sufficient number of good actions (helping neighbours or civilians in need, killing snipers at the Construction Site or thugs at the Brothel etc.) and keeping your survivors well-fed or not-hungry is more than enough for them to be content/normal. Moreover, Zlata isn't responsive to positive actions and impervious to negative actions like Arica is, she's responsive to all actions, which means she also needs others or semi-decent surviving contions to lift her up before/during her quest to boost morale.

    I don't think this guy prioritizes abilities right.
    My tier list...maybe this is biased by my game play (be an upstanding citizen, kill bandits but don't get into unnecessary combat, mostly shadow kills with a hatchet and shotgun in case things go sideways). So for example, Emilia's lack of empathy and Zlata's guitar skills don't mean much.
    S Tier (there's a reason one of the starts has him alone!)
    Marko (15 slots, good fighter, great special ability, no weakness whatsoever)
    A+ Tier
    Marin (by far the best special ability in the game, but mediocre in terms of everything else)
    A Tier
    Bruno (saves a lot of resources and gets discounts on making meds and alcohol, but mediocre guard and carrying capacity)
    Boris (17 slots and can hit/take a hit, but the speed penalty is a killer in large areas, or if you have to flee. The video overrates him)
    Katia (second best special, trading skills make building a cinch, 12 slots, and a good enough fighter)
    B+ Tier
    Pavle (12 slots, great speed handy at day and night, decent in combat)
    B Tier
    Roman (does one thing well, but I usually use him as a guard)
    Anton (I don't get the hate...or how being a mathematician helps you catch rats...but he'll make sure you have enough food that you can get rich trading it!)
    Zlata (I don't get many depressed characters but she has 12 slots, is decent in combat and guarding, like Pavle without the speed)
    C Tier
    Arica (she's a decent combatant in hand to hand, but her special ability is actually a drawback since I like to make a ruckus to draw bandits out. Few slots.)
    Emilia (special ability does nothing whatsoever for me, middling as a guard, mediocre slots)
    ZZZ Tier
    Cveta (are you kidding me? Poor carrying capacity, combat, guard. Her only use is to do tasks that everyone else can. Send her out on Voyt's thieving missions.)

    Why do they look like Breaking Bad characters

  • @boru1982
    @boru1982 Před 2 lety +5

    I think you gave way too much weight to combat ability in a game that is really most effectively played with little of it. Boris is quite deceiving to many players - he appears to be great at first but you soon discover how defunct he is after a few playthroughs. Mind-numbingly slow. Extra carrying slots are nowhere near worth it (you're failing to apply the character's stats to the actual gameplay and just judging them solely at face value). You'll end up clearing the vast majority of areas much faster with Marko - a man you term in relation to qualities as 'a master of none' even though he's easily the most efficient scavenger and will be used the most at night if he's in your team. Even Pavle, Katia and Zlata are faster at clearing areas than Boris. Boris' strength in combat is somewhat traded off for his ability to get Depressed and Broken very easily after killing and stealing. The only other character that comes close to how emotionally unstable Boris is is Zlata but at least she somewhat negates this by her musician skills. If you have Boris in the house you'll have to restrict your killing and stealing a lot. In fact I wouldn't have any of your favourite characters in my custom 3/4.
    I don't think you're taking(or accurately depicting) character's attributes as a whole into your grades which is very odd in a ranking video, or else putting way too much emphasis on one trait and not enough on others. For instance, Arica is vital in many areas of the scavenging game and due to her silent sprinting and looting is probably the best scavenger bar Marko. There is no downside to her as her tendency to get angry when she's sad and her addiction to smokes are more than made up for the fact that she's by far the easiest character to keep content. All of this together makes her one of the strongest characters. If you have a sad Arica, you're doing a violent run, and purposefully not helping others.
    I'm also not sure you realise how important Anton's special ability is when trying to feed 4 characters mid game before you have a stable economy going, or when the frost hits and you're using half your components on cooking water. The developers f*cked up with crypting his ability behind 'Good Mathematician'.
    Marin is great early game but after that his importance takes a nosedive. Over a whole playthrough, and even without the reverse trading bug, you'll save a lot more items with Katia's Bargaining abilities than Marin's Handyman trait as you need to be buying all components and wood from the trader on every visit. If you're using Bruno right - buying herbs then making and trading bandages, medicine and alcohol he's much more important than Marin. I don't think depicting Marin as the best character in the game was well thought out and a bit short-sighted. Your two best characters are red herrings that catch out beginners.

    • @AndyPlaysABG
      @AndyPlaysABG Před 2 lety +1

      You make a lot of good points, and it's clear you've played a lot. Honestly, the rankings probably indicate my playstyle more than anything.
      My gameplan is normally start quick, getting the barricades up as early as possible, and Boris and Marin are ideal for that. After that, it's relatively easy to set up the food economy without risk of losing anything.
      I take issue with your problems with Boris, especially as I've never struggled to fill his inventory in a night time.
      Besides that, I agree more impact on Antons ability and Aricas mood stability would be sensible if I were to redo it.
      I have played a lot of this game, so do have a decent amount of experience of all the characters, but always am happy to hear others opinions on my thoughts.

    • @boru1982
      @boru1982 Před 2 lety +3

      @@AndyPlaysABG that's a fair enough response. And you're probably right that in many ways the early game can be make or break or set the rest of the game up for success or failure so I'll take your point on importance of characters whose abilities are suited for that.
      My problems with Boris as a primary scavenger don't relate to filling inventory. They're to do with the fact that it takes him too many nights to find what a particular level has to offer. For instance, for large levels like the airport, construction site, military outpost he'll never get through the whole level in one or two nights if you're using a designated drop point. Even medium sized levels like railway station it will be a struggle in one night due to how slow he is at not just running but at climbing and looting.
      Almost ironically his best use imo is for players who do use designated drop points and as a secondary scavenger after the level has been cleared or cleared enough, when it's just b-lining to the drop point and get out again. Although you still have to be careful with items you've stolen(not looted) with your primary scavenger and dropped off at the drop point because if Boris brings them home he'll get sad which will possibly affect how you play the next few nights until the big Jessie is okay again as he has a tendency to get depressed very easily.
