My dad used to be a federal agent and we saw this movie together back in the day. He thought the Alonzo Mosley stolen badge bit was hysterical and he used to flash his badge at me and say, "Alonzo Mosley, FBI." All the time. Cracked me up.
Me and my brother both love this movie. And yeah. It’s an underrated gem.
We grew up in IL and both ended up in Las Vegas in the late 1989s and mid 1996s. My brother became a Vegas cop and I became an EMT. So we both had badges at one point. And yeah, we would both do “the thing” with the badges. 😆😆
I got to see the Blue Angel Motel before it degenerated into a bed bug infested weekly homeless shelter for meth heads.
Always wished I had gotten a bath towel from that place.
This is actually my favorite Robert De Niro movie. And one of the best buddy-"cop" movies ever. So underrated, maybe not underrated but unseen.
I'd say this and 48 hours are my favorite buddy cop movies
My favorite Robert De Niro flick is probably Goodfellas, but I love this movie too. I watched it last night and thought it was magnificent. Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino, Heat, A Bronx Tale, and Silver Linings Playbook are some of his other great films, this would defiantly make my top 10 though.
@@HugoSoup57 I'd put Midnight Run right before Goodfellas as a DeNiro movie since he was actually the main character in that one but Midnight Run, Goodfellas, Godfather Part ll, Taxi Driver, Casino, Analyze This and Raging Bull are my favorite DeNiro flicks of all time!
While De Niro has made movies where the acting may be better, there is no other De Niro movie I can watch and rewatch as much as this one.
Midnight Run is one of the best movies ever. The dynamic between De Niro & Grodin was perfect. Super funny too.
This is one of best movies ever made. Deniro is at his best. Grodin is superb. Every emotion in this movie feels genuine. The ending is maybe the best movie ending ive ever seen.
This movie is very underrated, a really fun brilliant comedy.

Omg...I used to watch this with my dad literally every week for months when I was in the 4th grade. Over 30 years later, I can still recite the entire movie word for word.

An incredibly underrated movie! It's one of those films that if I see it's playing on TV I flip over to watch it even if it's already half over.
Every time I see Dennis Farina in a movie I hear DiNiro yelling "Cerranno's got the disks!" in my head.

Watched this with my 14-year-old son recently because i enjoyed it so much with friends years ago.
I'm borderline proud to say that this is one of my all time favourites. Bloody awesome action comedy with a very real sort of feel to it. Did you know that it was one of Martin Brest's first films, around the same time as Beverly Hills Cop. And a very young Danny Elfman did the music. It's so different to any of Danny Elfman's music. That's a good sign a wicked composer. Being able to really sync with the style and the feel of the film, complimenting the vibes and themes.
You made a point out of Elfman. He knows how to sync with his director and his/her vision for the film. Like what he did with Burton or Raimi.
Great retrospective. Agreed, excellent and highly underrated movie. I was a teen working at a video rental outlet when it came out and we played it on repeat on the in-store TV. Never got tired of watching it.
This movie deserves to be up there with Planes, Trains & Automobiles and Dumb & Dumber as the all-time greatest road-comedies

This movie is criminally underrated as it is hilarious from start to finish. Charles Grodin having a panic attack before the plane takes off is still one of the funniest scenes of the movie. “These things go down!!!” Lol
My favorite line is when Walsh is bringing the Duke out of the desert and Marvin is driving up.
"Am I good, or am I just lucky?"....."Fuckin' A...I'm the BEST!" LMAO!
@@les4767 One of my favorites is the, possibly rule of 3, running bit where it's like "HOLY SHIT MARVIN, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!" and the final time is for real, but Marvin is too inept to realize what he's inserted himself into.
One of the most entertaining movies of the late eighties. Very talented cast. Charles Grodin traveled through his own universe. He is the same nervous agitated (but hilarious) guy in Midnight Run, in the Beethoven series, as well as during his appearances on David Letterman.
Just finished watching it for the first time! End credits are currently rolling! Love this film!!!!

I'm literally watching this movie now. First time I've seen it and watching it blind and love it up to now. I went looking for reviews just to see what others thought of the movie after liking it myself.
I watched this a lot too when I was a kid. And with my mom, she really loved the part when he was singing 100 bottles of beer on the wall.

the 'universal' logo appears & we hear the first notes of that slow blues guitar riff by danny elfman. doesn't matter if you've seen it 50 times already, you smile & settle in. this film is flawless, except for one little thing... the amount of times that someone gets completely knocked out by one punch. easily forgivable. i've never, ever, ever, ever, EVER met someone that has seen it & didn't love it. that's rare.
The lines I will always remember are "I will bury this f'in phone in your head..."(15yo me LOVED that😂), and "Marvin!" Definitely a great movie and a lot of people seem to have oddly never seen it...
My favorite De Niro film. I’ve watched it over and over, over the years.
Apparently, Robin Williams was interested in playing opposite de Niro but I think Grodin brought the right acting chops to his character. Plus, he and de Niro had that chemistry so difficult to find. Every part is perfectly cast. Farina is hilarious as the profane mob boss. A sterling script as well. Two scenes I love are the watch and when he meets his daughter. Very touching. All in all, a perfect ten here.
DeNiro seemed to be having a blast working on this film along with Grodin and Yaphet. Great screenplay and direction from the great Brest. Hence it's a real stunner to learn that Brest was difficult to work with - the end product was slick and action packed.One of my all time favs.
I saw Midnight Run when it was released in 1988. I was surprised to see Robert Di Niro in a comedy. I used to watch Midnight Run on HBO with my friends also. I watched it yesterday on Netflix and I enjoyed it. I was sad to hear that Charles Grodin passed away a few days ago.
Yea, overlooked this during it's original run, just saw it on Netflix also, and it showed the heart of the 80's for sure, Grodin was a beast in this movie, I see where the WWE got the inspiration for "The Rundown" movie with Dwayne Johnson

I saw this movie on the big screen when it came out... I thought it was amazing. “Agent Foster Grant” there was a small batch of great movies that graced us in the late 80’s, this was one of those.
My favorite buddy movie of the 80's! Loved it then, loved it now when I saw it again a few days ago, surprised to hear it wasn't a hit at it's initial release. Great video!
DeNiro was at his best comedy wise in this film. One of the best buddy movies of all time and a perfect action comedy. The chemistry between DeNiro and Grodin was pure magic. As much as I love Robin Williams I could just can't imagine the film working without Grodin and that special chemistry he and DeNiro had.
I worked at a theater showing it back in the day and I wore a button on my uniform that said "I'm Mosely!"(Everyone had to wear promo buttons on their uniforms, and I still have a lot of them decades later), which always tickled the customers seeing it.

One of the coolest, best written, casted movie ever. In my top 10, easily. Still have my VHS. Awesome for any movie night. Just a cool ride with two opposite buds.
Probably the best scene in the entire movie is when DeNiro is forced to visit his wife to ask for money, and bumping into his daughter. It also brings Grodin and DeNiro closer together. Note that when they leave his ex wife’s house, and DeNiro opens the passenger door for Grodin, he gently tucks Grodin’s jacket in so that it doesn’t get caught in the door. It’s so subtle, but it’s basically the first indicator we see as an audience, that their relationship is changing. In my opinion, DeNiro’s best comedy by a country mile, and a strangely touching story by the end of it. Absolutely love this movie! 💕
Very very well said. It's the most important scene in the whole movie, establishing Jack's true character, setting the emotional stakes for the great final confrontation between Jack and Cerrano. It's one of the most beautifully acted scenes in motion picture history
De Niro playing Axel Foley, perfectly said. One of his best movies. Yaphet Koto did steal every scene its shocking to hear it was a nightmare for him to make. What a professional!
I went to this film about 10 times in the theater when it came out. Great movie.

I watched this film so much when I was young. It is still great and I watch it at least once a year. The cast, the script! Incredible!

This bums me out. I was born in 88 so obviously wasn’t aware of the movie’s reception but it’s a favorite of my dads so I grew up watching it quite a bit. I never realized it was passed over that way.

Definitely an underrated gem. My favorite scene is after Grodin's character went through all those machinations in New York about how he was afraid to fly and gets them booted from their flight, it turns out he's a trained pilot and tries to escape in a biplane.

Midnight run and the star chamber ( with Michael Douglas) are probably 2 of the greatest movies made.
Another good 80s action comedy that many younger viewers may not be aware of is Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. And funny enough Joe Pantoliano has a small part in it. It had some good action scenes as well as good comedy scenes. It's one of those examples of striking the right balance.

I told everybody about this movie after I saw it on video tape. People got sick of me talking about it. I must have watched it about 30 times back then. It is a great movie. It's lost a little bit of the fun though for me, because I watched it too often back in the day! Another underated comedy, though of a different nature, that I loved and told everyone about was The Man Who Knew Too Little.

I was in a movie theater IN Anchorage Alaska and we all laughed with a big surprise when Robert DeNiro mentioned our hometown in the movie . Its a local must have movie along with the original THE THING movie . There's actually sequels to Midnight Run but without the original stars .

Here is Walsh trying to get the guy across the country facing every possible roadblock, and is constantly ragged upon. Pairing De Niro and Grodin was a genius move.
I must've been 11 when i first saw this. It was under the radar then and it's under the radar now. Time to turn that around!
2:24 - Don't know how to break this to you, but there were THREE sequels to this movie - all straight to video, all released in 1994. 'Another Midnight Run', 'Midnight Run For Your Life' and 'Midnight Runaround'. Both DeNiro and Grodin were wise enough to pass on them and the character of Jack Walsh was taken over by Christopher McDonald. Although McDonald's usually a pretty good actor in both drama and comedy, here he just seems to be spinning his wheels sorry to say.

Love Midnight Run. Saw it a bunch of times in the theater and really enjoyed Elfman's score. I think I saw De Niro first as Al Capone in Untouchables.
I grew up in this movie, straight up classic!👌👍 my favorite line in the movie is at the end where DeNiro has the money belt full of $1,000$ dollar bills, and flags down a cab and ask the taxi driver "change of 1,000$?" and the cab driver just looks at him like.. what the Fuck!? And then drives off😅
very unappreciated film and the way you described it as hard to categorize is spot on! it's not a screwball comedy, yet has some real lol moments. it's not a thriller but does have some real tension between the mob boss and Deniro. not an action flick but has some good action sequences! a must see for any Deniro fan.

I just rewatched Midnight Run (that's why I'm here ha)... It was a FAVE of my family and we had it on video tape and I must have watched it twenty times throughout my teen years because coming back to it 20 years later it felt familiar and nostalgic. ]The whole cast kills it, certainly and obviously Deniro and Grodin but also Joey Pants, Kotto, the murderers row of character actors and almost especially the few female characters, who really shine when there is finally a place in the male domninated story for the feminine presence. The editing in the dialog scenes is REALLY good: So many scenes end with a lol inducing mic drop and quick cut to something else and it really works. I also completely forgot it was a Danny Elfman's score, even though I remembered that the music was great. Definitely an outlier among Elfman's scores: a non-circusy, straight ahead bluesy rock score, and quite an above average achievement for that genre (much better than say the Lethal Weapon scores or Road House or something like that). AND (I know I'm going on here) there is real emotion and heart here as well, I found myself slightly tearing up a few times, especially the scene between Deniro and his ex wife and daughter and the final scene. Good stuff, totally holds up, 3.5 out of 4, if you haven't watched it, its better than all the later Deniro comedies, go watch it.

But hey, at least Robert De Niro got to work with Director Penny Marshall on the (underrated!) film “Awakenings”, which was better suited for him than the film “Big”.
P.S.: “Awakenings” would also be a great subject for a “Best Movie You Never Saw” episode.
Tom Hanks was actually always the first choice for *Big* but he was shooting another movie (*Dragnet,* I believe) and the filmmakers were worried about three similar movies going into production too. The choice was either: be the first of those out (where De Niro comes in) or be the last one out but have Tom Hanks
