  • The easiest way to improve your breathing on the flute is by listening to the sound of your breaths. Here I give a few common mistakes that can prevent you from taking full, relaxed breaths. Creating an open, unobstructed airway will also help you to play with a resonant and open sound.

One way I think about it is I imagine my instrument to be a balloon, and the more air I take in and put out, the more inflated it gets. It worked wonders for one of the freshman in my school.

This was brilliant. Your examples were so authentic. My breathing is relatively ok (noiseless)but
I am asthmatic, which I feel is like a mismanagement of breath (mine is triggered by temperature, aerobic activity and holding my breath without realising). Whilst I practice breathing exercises often I still have issues when practicing flute. I have to notate where my breaths are taken on what I work on and would love to hear your thoughts on extending the breath whilst playing. I love playing long tones and can manage 18-20 seconds but put a melody and I don’t think I get 20 seconds.

Thanks for the lesson, Lance! But you left out the worst thing: "I've run out of air! I'm going to gulp into the flute and create an altogether new note!" People, move the flute and take your breath or use your nose. Better yet, PLAN for your breathing!

A critical part of breathing is to Inhale from the diaphragm, not your chest as you would think. Place Your hand on your stomach, when you inhale your stomach should pouch out or expand, then the chest. As a vocalist this is critical as is with wind instruments.

I'm really interested in the flute, I used to play the piano but recently my attention shifted towards the flute, do you have any recommendations for flutes as a beginner? With also a beginner budget lol
