- The easiest way to improve your breathing on the flute is by listening to the sound of your breaths. Here I give a few common mistakes that can prevent you from taking full, relaxed breaths. Creating an open, unobstructed airway will also help you to play with a resonant and open sound.

Thanks I'm a year 5 student learning the flute and it helps me alot!
Great! thanks!
One way I think about it is I imagine my instrument to be a balloon, and the more air I take in and put out, the more inflated it gets. It worked wonders for one of the freshman in my school.
This was brilliant. Your examples were so authentic. My breathing is relatively ok (noiseless)but⊠I am asthmatic, which I feel is like a mismanagement of breath (mine is triggered by temperature, aerobic activity and holding my breath without realising). Whilst I practice breathing exercises often I still have issues when practicing flute. I have to notate where my breaths are taken on what I work on and would love to hear your thoughts on extending the breath whilst playing. I love playing long tones and can manage 18-20 seconds but put a melody and I donât think I get 20 seconds.
Bro this is random but you're like, very beautiful and you speak so soft and sweet. Thanks for the tips
Hello lance ! It's me Janet!! Just watched your video on breathing!! Ugh!Ugh!Ugh!I continue to struggle on getting through phrases because of my breathing \ support! Very frustrating!! I'm not getting it !!!!just had to vent!! Back to practicing.l can't ask for anymore tips or tricks .you have shared plenty.and l thank you for that !! It's just me !!Ugh! have a great eveningđ
Hi Janet!
Iâm considering a longer breathing video in the coming months. Lmk if you have any specific questions and I will try to address them. Happy practicing!
You just taught me how to fake my snore
Thank you so much
Wow cool
†thanks đ
Thanks for the lesson, Lance! But you left out the worst thing: "I've run out of air! I'm going to gulp into the flute and create an altogether new note!" People, move the flute and take your breath or use your nose. Better yet, PLAN for your breathing!
Indeed. Planning breaths is key!
flute and harmonica are some of the most underrated instruments unlike drums and guitar.
A critical part of breathing is to Inhale from the diaphragm, not your chest as you would think. Place Your hand on your stomach, when you inhale your stomach should pouch out or expand, then the chest. As a vocalist this is critical as is with wind instruments.
after doing my region audition which i practiced so much for i realized i was breathing wrong this entire time... đ
Me, has large tonsils so my throat is clogged (and plays trombone): ARE YOU SERIOUS RN BRO-
Iâm just starting band this year (giving up next year) and I have to hold 8 seconds!!đ
Hello Lance from France , i am agree with that of course . i have a question for you ... I practise a historical flûte ,Old systÚme , with 8 keys . what do you think about the return enthousiasm for theses instruments ? i use the same matériel ,études and i am very influenced by the Boehm flustists .... I was cellist and i practise the same trucs , the same exercices .... , To hear you is Always a lesson .an answer perhaps ? Thanks Lance
I'm really interested in the flute, I used to play the piano but recently my attention shifted towards the flute, do you have any recommendations for flutes as a beginner? With also a beginner budget lol
Check out Di Zhao. Not the cheapest, but the best value for your money.
If you have asthma, use your rescue inhaler first :-)
Hey lance Iâm having a lot of trouble with 16th notes
Will these tips also help with double tonguing?
Hmm..perhaps not directly but canât hurt!
If you want a clear voice in the flute, blow shankh everyday once or twice
Ah breathing, the most important thing for a wind instrument. Yet nearly everyone in the orchestra im in are smokers/vapers
And watching yourself breathe in the mirror. Itâs a very humbling experience. đ
Indeed! Very humbling but a great practice!
I wonder why my sound is airy.
Pranayama ahdama.
