Janj is a geographical, historical, and cultural area of the western part of Central Bosnia (Bosnia and Herzegovina). It is located between the Vrbas River, the Pliva River, and the Vitorog Mountain. The name of the area comes from the small but beautiful river Janj, the tributary of Pliva. It is inhabited primarily by the Orthodox Serbs.
The uniqueness of the Janj area lies in its strong roots in tradition. Many aspects of culture including folk costumes, craft, music, or traditional working methods (such as working with draft horses and cutting grass with a scythe to provide food for animals) are still cultivated and constitute the common identity of the Janjani. What particularly enchanted us was the unique singing with a very strong, deep emission.
"Ruko moja duža od rukava" is a bundle of bećarac songs, characterized by one-line singing repeated by the other singers. The melody, text as well as the style of singing are characteristic of the region.
    Lyrics (SR)
Oj, ruko moja duža od rukava
Bi l' poznala kog si milovala?
    Nema kola moj mio jarane
Dok u kolu pregača ne mane
Oj, nema kuće, nema ni ajata
Gdje ja nisam pokuca' na vrata
    Evo braće jedan do drugoga
    Pogin'o bi jedan za drugoga
Sad čuje on tamo da šušti
Koji je sad, je l' to muško il žensko? Ovo je muško, ovo žensko
    U djevojke iverana prega
Iveran i ja i moj kolega
Odrmaj, zadrmaj, pusti mlade neka rade
    Drm košuljom, drm drm drm
    Lyrics (ENG)
Oh, my hand, longer than the sleeve
Would you recognize the one you caressed?
It's not a real kolo, my dear friend
If there are no girls with aprons
    Oh, there's no house
Where I didn't knock on the door
Here are the brothers standing shoulder to shoulder
One would give his life for the other
Now the cameraman will hear rustling
And now, is it male or is it female? This one's male, this one's female
The girl has a colorful apron
My friend and I look colorful as well
Shake, shake, let the youth work, shake your shirt, drm drm drm
