Heart Breakers: Walter Lure Johnny Thunders Punk NYC

  • Saw Walter Lure the other night and was super stoked to see a Heart Breaker live. As a teen I really got into the Dolls and by extension I started picking up JT records as well. I love Johnny’s solo output including the HB records. Funny though, I never realised that Walter was such a driving force in those HB days. His voice and guitar licks are such a integral part of the late 70’s sound and underground scene. JT is definitely a star but Lure, Nolan and Rath are right there putting down a blue print for a sound and image of 77 punk.
Check out the songs, videos, books and information all over the net. Plus Flipside CT's Video on Walter. • #151 The Great True Pu...
By no way do I want encourage people to listen to them. I hate the watering down and selling of the music I loved growing up to eleven year old teens who have no clue what t-shirt or pin they are wearing. I just want to share with fellow fans from the past, present and future.
This video is just to make myself and my young self happy. I have no intention to make money off this. - Alf

Absolutely - Walter never got the recognition he deserved. Let's face it the Heartbreakers are still overlooked.

Saw the Heartbreakers so many times, my feet were firmly planted in the cbgb Max's Kansas City scene from about 1977 thru 1980. Walter was so cool, he was in The Blessed for awhile, they were teenagers, we'd call him Father Walter and he'd call me and my friend Jersey Girls.
I can't tell you how many times the roadies would turn down Johnny's amp, he'd turn it back up and as soon as he turned his back they turned it right back down. I remember many times talking to Johnny and I'd stand on a step below him because I'm nearly 5'10". We also share the same birth date.
If I had a time machine I'd go right back to 1977.
    LAMF ❤

Heartbreakers were great and excellent video here. So many early on never knew it was Walter on vocals and lead guitar on One Track Mind, All By Myself, Get Off The Phone, Junkie Business and a bunch more. Walter's Rent Party cd from the early '90's is also a classic!

Hey AlfieBlue , great post giving love to Walter. Really dig “All By Myself” too. I know what you meant about them being dangerous. On the studio version of “Chinese Rocks” there’s this lone guitar note in the first few bars that’s like the clarion of doom, and it’s perfect.

What the Heartbreakers loved about England was that many drug-related things went in their favour: the heroin prevalent in New York at the time was the China White coming from the Golden Triangle of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, which was cut to fuck and really weak, whereas the heroin in Europe (except the Mediterranean countries which strangely received the China White that travelled through the water routes) was potent Brown from Afghanistan, which was called “Syrian” on the Continent. When they came to London and scored, they all overdosed, as they weren’t used to such a strong smack. Plus, they could buy cough syrups whose main ingredient was Codeine, all over the counter without the need for a script, and tablets for flu and headaches with Paracetamol and Codeine. Then they would separate the Paracetamol from the Codeine with the chemical process called “sifting” (only water and a t-shirt required to carry it out), and drink the bitter Codeine collected. Plus, they could get registered on the National Health Service as heroin addicts, which entitled them to a script for daily doses Of Diacetylmorphine (aka “Hospital heroin”), and also receive Methadone from a script issued by their local General Practitioner. It was basically Junkie Heaven, and it was only homesickness and constant financial penury that made them go back to Noo Yawk....

Johnny Ramone didn't play leads, according to Walter Lure, in an interview on youtube. With Lure and Thunders together, they were an awesome band, a bizarre Lennon/McCartney of punk rock. Lure's alternate lyrics to Chinese Rocks, when they played live, put the song on a whole different level, just like Lure and Thunders were on a whole different level when they were on stage together.

ok, stopped the vid, two things wrong so far...the 2nd album by the stooges is Fun House, the 3rd is Raw Power. and also, JT & The Heartbreakers flew to London FOR the anarchy tour, not just cos things, the offer was put foward by Malcom Mclaren and they accepted. If you search youtube, You'll find a lil piece of footage where David Johansen is interviewing JT outside (i think) CBGBs, wherein he says they are about to go on tour in London with some groups. he may mention the pistols, i cant remember.

Ok jungle. The video is not meant to be the definitive history of Lure, Thunders, Dolls, Heartbreakers or Iggy. It is something I put together, inspired by WL coming to my city to play a gig and me falling back in love with the Dolls and the Heartbreakers - Reminiscing of my teen years listening to some of the coolest music ever recorded in my opinion. Johnny was also...the Lead Singer of the New York Dolls... ....
The first band Heartbreak ers...had to break up over Richard Hell...And so ....lost the great songs.
Walter was Jerry Nolan's ....choise...( So was Luigi )
The stole back the music to Love Cums in Spurts..made it into One Track Mind.
But Richard Hell...left a huge hole in what the band looked like ( the Richard Hell Heartbreak ers...were actually scarry - frightening )
Walter sings monotone , can't pen lyrics , and has a cornyness about him. And next Jerry quits. And Walter was written up in the British press ...and it goes to his head. ( A nothing little quote.)
And the record has the sound issue.
They get the sessions in the the studio...after they e been surviving on gigs... Johnny's voice is shot...shot. ( all ragged when he does intro to do you love me )
Other issue was Nolan disallowing ' So Alone' from the set.
So...Johnny realizes he can get rid of Walter...and in England all sorts of people come to his aid...and he adopts Henri. This is all going on over Laker flight hops to England .....one time he comes back and joins the Senders...he is getting on the stage in NY for photo ops. ...with other artists like Greg Meranka's. Fleshtones. Then also he
Is doing New Years Eve shows at the Yippee- run...Studio 10 ( they hand out free joints....)
With Arthur Kane... Phillieep ( Senders ) Tony Machine , Mugsy Spanner , others....
Walter of course , he uses for rent party's gigs......
Then he teams up with Wayne Kramer....and is hoping to be on an album with him...But to get paid...the go on serious cross country tour....( In a Winnabego ). ....and Johnny now has to keep up with Wayne....Johnny is doing stage jumping...like a insaine routine....getting chords in the air ...to Rambling Rose. night after night.
He was the coolest in the Senders. Cause he's a great side man.
He did so many gigs hoping across to England...he lived on the stage. And if let Water on with him.....Walter tried to upstage him. ( d u m b )
Wayne ...separated before he got Jimmy Miller....so......Walter is on Jimmy Miller.
And his wife left ...with kids.
Then he starts getting guys like big huge guy on bass & Luigi.....and brings Dobro on stage....
    Never the same again.
